STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE BORDER UNION 19

First of all I want to thank all exhibitors who gave me their entries! When arriving at the ring I was greeted by two very capable ring stewards who I do feel must have their names mentioned, Claire Crossman and Paul Sutcliff. They made sure everything was organised perfectly in the ring, one would be amazed to find out how much a ring steward must do which isn’t directly visible, so that I could fully concentrate on the judging. I was so pleased to find that the number of handlers that use bait when handling the dogs was almost zero. Giving a dog a treat while in the ring is totally different to baiting where the dog is so focused on the food to an extend that it’s totally unaware of the rest that’s happening in it’s proximity which is totally unasked for in a breed like ours where the attention for all people (which includes the judge) should be obvious. Staffords aren’t statues! After a period where we were losing width in fronts I think we’re back on track. Our breed should have a wide front. Another point that we should pay attention to in my opinion is the shape of the eye, the standard asks for a round and medium sized eye. Nowadays you see a lot of almost almond shaped eyes and this does give our breed a foreign expression. As with many things, kennel blindness is nearby is this matter. If all dogs in your home do’ve this particular kind of eyeshape you might think this is the correct shape, it’s not, it’s just that you’re used to it! A last thing I would like to point out is that the breed standard requires that the pasterns show no weakness from which point feet should turn out a little. Strangely enough a lot of handlers make the feet face forwards, this is not correct and this also extenuates the elbows, but in mine opinion this is not as “wrong” as when the feet are toeing in, which I consider a serious fault, but which can also been seen quite regular. The good thing in dogs is that virtues and undesired traits come and go and as long as we are aware of what’s happening we can deal with challenges (read undesired traits) and move on the right way, and that’s forward!

1 Wilson’s Elitebull Elysian Dream At Kalverin. Quality and eye striking, my first thoughts when I saw her. Historically our breed is a head breed and that doesn’t mean the rest isn’t important, it’s equal important but, when you come across a head like this Stafford has, you understand why in the first breed standard the point scale awarded the most points to the head. This well defined head has neat rose ears, well set and shaped eyes from correct size, she has a distinct stop, powerful underjaw, a correct bite and all this attributes to a keen and smashing expression. Her legs are straight and her pasterns are strong and she stands on well padded feet. Her neck is muscular. She has a level topline which she also keeps on the move. She has a good tailset which indicates a correct slope of the pelvis. Her stifles are well bent. I considered her for the reserve CC but in the final line-up she let it down on her movement, no one can blame her considering her age having showed her socks off already.
