Staffordshire Bull Terriers
Condition of most of the exhibits was top class, tremendously fit, shining with health & vitality, all were a credit to their owner.

The one thing which is always difficult to assess are feet, especially in the adverse conditions, though the grass had been freshly mown. It was almost impossible to assess them, though pasterns were strong. Something that concerned me was weight, I had one or two extremely fine exhibits of excellent type carrying too much which spoiled their outline & movement. Movement generally was quite sound especially going away with plenty of flex in hindquarter & discernible drive; coming back to me movement was excellent with plenty of forward reach. Movement on one or two was spoiled by the handler holding the lead too short & far too tight trying to control their charge, it does more to spoil movement than keeping the exhibit under control. Trust your dog & let them move freely on a loose lead.

There has been much talk about the lack of substance, but I am extremely pleased to report that the problem seems to have gone away at least for today. My final point of concern is excessive length back long coupling which displays an ugly weakness between hip & loin, thankfully there was very few of them.

Moving to the tented area was not the best thing to have done as some of the younger bitches & one or two of the older ones found it a nerve racking experience especially the flapping sound that tents tend to make.

I was particularly pleased with my final results, giving me complete satisfaction on both type condition & movement especially.

CC & BOB was Kyraloebis Italian Gigalo, one off the top shelf & a pleasure to go over, strong blocky head deep as it was broad, powerful jaw, strong white teeth, powerful muzzle, tight lips, distinct stop, well balanced exhibit, tremendous front elevation & profile, fit in tremendous condition, full of breed type, when he moved showed he was in control of the ring; RCC, Jagsstaff The Fisherking, I, like a lot of other judges look forward to assessing the Open class & was not disappointed, as before me was a class full of quality exhibits all of whom could take top honours at any time, this fellow fought hard for the position & deserved it, full of type which one has come to expect from this kennel, powerful head broad as deep, short strong muzzle full of large white teeth, distinct stop, excellent front straight & well boned tremendous profile, in tip-top condition, thought he owned the ring, moved pleasingly; CC, Taraiel Ciara, I have been a great admirer of this kennel producing many fine exhibits over the years, this young bitch took me by storm, in wonderful condition, fantastically constructed, formidable head, deep stop, strong, short muzzle, strong jaws, tight lips, large clean teeth, excellent front elevation, incredible neck into exceptionally laid shoulders, outstanding rib deep into brisket, short coupled, incredible tuck, hindquarters need little explanation bulging with hard muscle, terrific angulations, fine pump handle tail, plenty of flex on move driving superbly; RCC, Oxstoks Cherry Blossom, I have watched this young bitch from an early age & will admit that I liked her, but today blew my socks off as this was the first time that I have laid my hands on her, & what a pleasure it was too, one could tell a lot of work had gone into her, was hard & fit in good condition, blocky head & muzzle, excellent front elevation, ample bone, tremendous profile & a topline to die for, excellent movement with plenty of flex & drive; BP, Kimstaff’s Harry Potter, mature for age, powerful construction with nothing over done, time is definitely on his side, a real dogs head developing, strong, deep & broad, powerful muzzle, excellent dentition, remarkable front, ample bone, balanced exhibit who enjoyed his day out, fine profile, has everything, moved distinctly.

MPD (5)

1 Kimber’s Kimstaff’s Harry Potter, BP;

2 McGowan & Owen’s Tagstane Analyze This, I had fine exhibits to assess & it was not easy, pushed 1 hard for his placing, just lacked the maturity of 1. Powerful in construction, fine head & expression, put together well, moved OK;

3 Patrick’s Welshstaff Last Gasp.

PD (2)

1 Creaney’s Seabull Jolly Roger, this fellow is a star for the future, everything as it should be, excellent head, superb expression in tremendous condition, moved as one of quality should, deep stop, darkest of eyes, superbly constructed, nothing exaggerated moved well;

2 Lewis’ Charmonics Regal Lad, turned out in his Sunday best, looking the part, fine head, deep & square, clean scissor bite, would have liked a little more of him. Superb construction which could be seen as confidently moved around the ring.

JD (6)

1 K Italian Gigalo;

2 Smith’s Staffash The Hurricane, a very strong class & this fellow well deserved his placing, coming up against the BOB winner, strong head of correct shape, deep through as broad, excellent front elevation, tremendous profile, great angulations, moved well;

3 Nicholson’s Rowansblac Luvly Jubbly for Ballindona.

YD (6)

1 Graham’s Rellec Prince Buster, this was no ordinary class as I really had to work hard to sort these two out for the placing, each in his own right deserved a red card, excelled in type, strong head, nothing overdone, clean scissor bite, short powerful muzzle, distinct stop, good eye, excellent front, lovely profile, super construction, a credit to his owners, moving distinctly round ring;

3 McDermott’s Waystaff Dutch Chieftan.

LD (10)

1 Stanway’s Waystaff Strikes Out, a difficult class to assess as all were worth taking home, my first choice for this class was the predominately white of some quality, if asked to assess this dog take your time & go over him carefully as has an awful lot to offer the breed, tremendous head & stop, powerful jaw, excellent scissor bite, still developing & I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet, tremendously straight well boned front, deep into his brisket marvellous angulation, level topline, moving freely;

2 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Dizzee Rascal, I have liked from the ring side, pleased to run my hands over him, turned out to impress & did, powerfully constructed, full of immense, quality tiptop condition, excellent head, strong short muzzle, clean bite, tremendous front & profile, looking good on move;

2 Chester’s Ryestaff Jack The Lad, a first-class exhibit full of breed type, powerfully constructed, super head deep & broad, short, strong muzzle, excellent dentition, on his toes which I liked to see, excellent front elevation, superb angulations, tremendous profile but would have preferred a little less weight. Movement OK. Would have been better without the weight;

3 Marlow’s Ch Briganah New Moon.

MPB (3)

1 McPhail’s Scorguie Stolen Kisses, when I looked down the line-up I felt that the future of the breed is secure for what I was looking at was the future, I had two incredible puppies to look at with little or no difference between them, however I had to make a choice, for a pup had what is needed, strong head & expression, defined stop, short muzzle, strong underjaw, clean bite, tremendous front, well off for bone, broad & deep, powerful neck into superbly placed shoulder, tremendous rib, excellent angulations, hindquarters filling nicely, moving like a puppy of quality should;
