STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE BITCHES CRUFTS 20

I’ve heard it said many times that judging at Crufts is a truly unique experience, well now I can confirm that in my humble opinion it definitely is. Certainly for me it will be an unforgettable day with a super entry of 210 (and only 28 absentees) which called for an 8am start; this was a bit of a shock to the system but nonetheless necessary to meet the time restraints. The overall quality was excellent which meant that a lot of good bitches ended up without a placement, in some cases just a matter of minor differences. There were a few lighter in bone than is my interpretation of the standard, but I found no breathing problems even in the shorter muzzled specimens or those with less open nostrils. There were no particular mouth concerns apart from a few broken teeth & untidy dentition, although having the owner open the animal’s mouth was not altogether the best way of accurately assessing any faults. I was looking for standard, well boned, balanced bitches and was satisfied that all my winners fulfilled these requirements. My sincere thanks to all those exhibitors, some of whom had travelled long distances, who gave me the opportunity of going over their bitches and may I say how impressed I was with the sporting behaviour shown towards each other in the ring. A real pleasure to see exhibitors congratulating each other. Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention how fortunate I was to have John Dare & Jaci McLauchlan steward for me – they worked extremely well together and ensured everything ran smoothly and efficiently, enabling me to just concentrate and enjoy judging, which I most definitely did. Thank you both for working so hard; you two can steward for me again any day of the week.

VB (15,3)

Lovely strong class to commence with, these mature bitches have done their stuff, got the awards to prove their worth & now simply enjoy their day out – showing some of the youngsters just how it should be done.

1. Stanway’s Ch Mosstrooper Making Mischief At Waystaff JW (Imp.Aus), eye-catching red & white pied, just a little over 7 years old and still in her prime, possessing a shapely head & pleasing expression, beautiful dark round eye, neat well placed ears, looks good front on, well laid shoulders, plenty of bone, level topline & good bend of stifle. Very appealing & nicely balanced bitch. Moved well BV, in complete agreement with my co-judge, Jeff Ford.

2. Wilson’s Ch Bullhawk Jessie Jay At Northstaff, bl/br, only 3 months older than 1, but again could still give some younger bitches a run for their money. Strong feminine head, small rose ears, piercing dark eyes giving a wicked expression, short level back, ample bend of stifle and neat feet. Close decision, just preferred winner’s front.

3. Funnell’s Ch Kewaunee Pocahontas For Powerpack, JW, 12 year old bl/br, who although losing her head a little, it still retains a good shape, very alert expression, Pigmentation good throughout, well ribbed, nice shapely body, level topline held on the move.
MPB (2,1) 1. Roper & Harrison & Hornberg-Wilson’s Ruby Ice At Trawden Fransimo Bohemia (Imp Cze). Red & White, 7 months old very promising puppy, good size for age and developing well, a real pretty girl with a nicely proportioned bull & terrier blend head and a strong foreface, ears neat enough, her front is straight, body good with a level topline. Tended to move a little close behind but considering her age, this didn’t spoil her overall virtues. Stood alone but well worthy of her first place. Strong contender for BPB but had had enough of showing by the time it came to this competition, and refused to stay still for longer than a minute.
PB (15,1) 1. Howard’s Matrixstaffs Black Beauty, well chosen name for this quality bl/br, just 9 months old but has such ring presence. Head is particularly striking, deep through, with pronounced stop and good underjaw, neat ears and dark eyes set wide apart that give her that super keen expression. She is well boned, has a good front & no weakness of pasterns, nice tight well padded feet. Shapely body with good ribcage, short in back and strong hindquarters. Worked well with handler. BPB. 2. Murphy’s Brockmar Rewrite The Stars, another really typy bl/br, ten months in age, whose positive virtues are equally as obvious as the winner of the class, so it was an extremely close decision. Both have the potential to do well in the future and I’m sure they will change places many times, Will watch their progress with interest. 3. Dickenson & Stewart’s Barielle Winters Blossom, pleasing bl/br just under 1 year old and looking promising, strong in head and plenty of substance but without losing femininity. Nice all round youngster who handled well in a strong class.

JB (27,3)

1. Gabel’s The World Edition Of Spirit-Staff’s, bl/br with white toes, well constructed body with just enough tuck-up, adequate rib, nice level topline which was maintained on the move, ample bone, good feet and excellent pigmentation. Very appealing head with a blunt muzzle and a delightful expression enhanced by her dark eyes & rose ears. Handled well.

2. Breckell’s Chiswelstaff Penny Black, taller bl/br whose qualities were very comparable with 1. Her head is strong, she has a good body & topline, nicely angulated hindquarters with tight feet. Close decision.

3. Stanway’s Waystaff Full Moon, white bitch of good proportions, nice head shape, good cheek muscle and strong foreface with lovely black nose & really dark penetrating eyes. Decent width to front, well ribbed, good rear end and tail set. Moved well when she got going.

YB (19,1)

1. Corcoran’s Molru Roll With It, Ir Jun Ch, good sized bl/br bitch of immense quality, well boned, super head with strong muzzle, round eyes & nicely positioned neat ears. True front, well laid shoulders, level back, good muscled hindquarters and nicely bent stifles. A correct tail set completed a pleasing picture.

2. Gabel’s Rnb Of Spirit-Staff’s, typy red bitch, very clean in outline, head shape is good, beautiful dark eyes, small thin ears & a dark mask are a bonus. Body is compact and shoulder placement spot on. Excellent coat condition. Very alert and showed well.

3. Jackson’s Jackabyte Bocouture JW, bl/br, nice style of bitch, well put together. Head is strong but feminine & clean with correct bite, eye & ear placement good, straight front, deep brisket, good rear end & nice bend of stifle. Moved OK.

UGB (16,1)

1. Lahodova’s Champagne Rose Fransimo Bohemia, red & white pied, substantially built with good bone, attractive head with a clean muzzle, pleasing dark round eyes, nicely positioned neat ears. Well put together, decent width to front, enough rib, level topline and good hindquarters. Showed and handled well.

2. Heron’s Dilirystaff Spirit Of Love, such a beautiful tiger brindle colour with a white chest, she certainly stands out in a crowd. Well built, true front, good rib, short coupled, she has a reasonably strong feminine head with a distinct stop, nice length of muzzle to skull, neat ears & dark sparkling eyes. Would have liked feet a little tighter.

3. Hopkins’ Raspberry Ripple Of Spirit-Staffs To Trufflestaff, very attractive deep red, with a shapely head, tidy ears, dark expressive eyes set well apart, deep stop, clean lip & correct bite. Her front is wide and her body compact, ample rib with a level topline.

GB (20,5)

1. Champagne Rose Fransimo Bohemia.

2. Stanway’s Waystaff Honeymoon, rich red with white blaze, nice all round type of bitch, very clean in outline, good head not overdone with lovely dark eyes, straight front, well laid shoulders and well sprung rib, level topline standing & moving, pigmentation is good, as is coat texture.

3. Yates’ Ellchansha Happy Ever After, smallish well boned bl/br, nice make and type. Very appealing head, short strong muzzle, dark eyes and well placed neat ears that aid expression. Good shapely body and hindquarters. Moved and handled well.

PGB (14)

1. Gallagher’s Eclypstaff Thumbelina, well proportioned m/br bitch who instantly caught my eye, she looked good stacked and didn’t disappoint when you got your hands on her. Loved her head that is deep through, strong clean muzzle with pleasing underjaw, dark eyes, topped off with thin rose ears. Short neck flowing into good shoulders, true in front, deep brisket, good rib and hindquarters. Handled well and moved freely. Liked her a lot.

2. Riley & Corcoran’s Molru Shine Ya Light, bl/br who was unlucky to come up against winner today in such good form. She is a lovely balanced bitch, well boned, nice body, short coupled with a strong back end and correct tail-set. Head is good, clean cut, with dark eyes and neat ear carriage. Shown in fit condition.

3. Beesley’s Maxstaff Miss Whizz, nice standard deep red bitch with excellent pigmentation, tight padded feet with black nails. Attractive head with pleasing dark mask, clean in lip, round eyes set well apart, ears a little flighty but this doesn’t detract from overall quality. Soundly constructed, good tuck up & strong rear quarters. Lively girl who makes handler work hard.

MLB (21,5)

1. Rowe & South’s Illori Bootie Luv, substantial standard bl/br bitch with plenty of virtues, very typy, no disappointment when going over her either, what you see is what you get, a lovely fit and nicely put together package. Strong deep though head, discernible cheek bumps, but in no way doggy, very alert expression, small rose ears which she uses well, maybe eyes could be a tiny bit darker, but hey ho, you can’t always have perfection. Her neck is short, front is good width, well off for rib, short back and neat tuck up, together with powerful well muscled hindquarters that enable her to move with purpose.

2. Funnell’s Powerpack Alura Finvarra, JW, bl/br, head not quite as strong as winner but nevertheless a good shape & very feminine, with nicely proportioned muzzle length to skull, dark expressive eyes, neat ears, correct mouth. Body is well developed presenting a pleasing clean outline, very balanced bitch in hard condition.

3. Kirk’s Jodanzac Fireball Red, JW, lovely deep red whose head is a nice blend of bull & terrier, clean cut and very typy, with a pleasing expression. Good sized bitch, straight front and decent depth of brisket, her topline is good and she has strong back end. Lovely fine close coat.

LB (14,3)

1. Lee & Colman’s Berrystock Enigma Black, standard sized bl/br who showed with an air of ‘ignore me if you can’. Super head & expression, deep through skull, short enough strong muzzle, neat ears well positioned. Strong neck, straight front, nicely boned legs with good padded feet that correctly turn out slightly, ample rib and strong muscled hindquarters. Moved freely maintaining a level topline. Expertly handled to make her stand out in a class of very nice bitches. For me, has what it takes to achieve top honours – hope she soon does.

2. Greaves’ Rumaco Sweet Mischief, predominantly white with dk/br patches. Nice overall bitch, solid & well built but not cloddy. Attractive head, deep stop, strong muzzle and underjaw. Compact body, level topline, short coupled, well boned front legs and good rear quarters. Moved extremely well.

3. McDermott & Bernhardsson’s Kings & Queens Over The Moon (Imp.swe). Showy bl/br of standard size, with a good shapely head, distinct stop, enough underjaw, tidy ears nicely positioned, dark round eyes. Body is well conditioned, front is clean with good lay of shoulder, well ribbed, nicely angulated back end with well bent stifles.

OB (39,5)

A tremendous class of first rate bitches, which meant I had plenty of choice but unfortunately for exhibitors, still only five places to fill.

1. Murphy’s Ch/Ire Ch Karwillage Mystic Girl, definitely the star of the day for me, didn’t put a foot wrong and showed her socks off. Top quality standard bitch with a most beautiful head & fabulous expression. Her dark piercing eyes & perfectly positioned neat ears complete the picture of an excellent example of beauty & strength. Her front is straight, her legs well boned with nice padded feet turning out just enough, compact body, deep brisket, short coupled and well developed hindquarters. She was presented in excellent condition, remained alert and responsive to her handler without hesitation throughout, moving with drive and maintaining a level topline. A lovely bitch, congratulations to her breeders & owners. Pleased to award her CC, and in complete agreement with my co-judge, BOB.

2. Strom’s Joddricks Poker Face, eye catching bl/br with white chest & front legs. Although slighter smaller in stature than 1, this bitch is also a first class example of the breed. Her front is straight & true, well laid shoulders, short level back, close coupled, with a strong rear end and sound as a bell. She has a very nice head, strong foreface, dark round eyes, with well placed thin small ears that really enhance her delightful expression.

3. Johnson’s Ch Ellchansha Once Upon A Time, beautifully balanced bl/br that enjoys showing herself off, plenty of spirit. Classic head, terrific expression, almost jet black eyes, nicely put together body, looks good standing naturally & moved with purpose, carried tail a little high. Shown in tip top condition.

GCDS B (8)

Somehow one doesn’t expect to find a Champion in this class but it is great to see how our breed is capable of having a show career but then using their brain to compete in a different type of exercise altogether.

1. Champagne Rose Fransimo Bohemia.

2. Rowe & South’s Ch Illori Believe In Me, JW, bl/br at the top end of the scale for me but she is a sound balanced bitch, so well proportioned with such a clean outline. I personally favour a stronger head, but it is a pleasing shape with eye & ear placement giving good expression. Not an ounce of spare fat on this bitch’s well conditioned body, a credit to her breeder/owner. Covers the ground with ease and handles well.

3. Turner’s On The Hill Two At Tidestaff, m/br of good size, substantial build, straight front, decent head with plenty of underjaw, strong hindquarters, tail well set on. Moved OK.
