STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 23

I would firstly like to thank The Birmingham Dog Show Society for their invitation to Judge and award my first sets of CCs, it was a great honour which I thoroughly enjoyed. Congratulations must also go to their hard working committee and members for putting on a such fabulous well organised (Coronation) Show, well done. Thanks also to my ring stewards Jacqui Davies and John Parker who did a fabulous job. Last but not least many thanks to each and every exhibitor who took the time and expense to show their Staffords under me, it was a privilege and I sincerely appreciated it. Thank you also for taking my decisions in such a sporting manner and giving applause to those placed. The standard in some classes was so good I could have doubled up on the place cards quite easily. Overall the quality on display was excellent including mouths with only of a couple of misplaced incisors so I wont mention teeth in my critiques. I did however notice a small number of exhibits with narrow upright fronts and a couple of exhibits slab sided, something to be mindful of especially when breeding as these are not characteristic of our breed.
I’d also like to mention that some exhibits went unplaced because I was unable to fully access them as they had not been trained to stand and walk enough to evaluate them properly, this is such a shame as ringcraft classes can be found in most areas. Finally fitness, this can make such a difference to the exhibit in both look and feel, sadly a few lacked fitness and tone which can make all the difference when it comes down to close decisions for places.

MPD (5)

1 Millers Skyland Imperial, Bl/Br puppy whose confidence and ring presence made him stand out from the crowd. His proportionate clean head and lip won 1st place over 2nd. He’s quite well muscled and defined for such a young dog and has good width and depth to his rear quarters which he used to full potential on the move. Sound image created both standing and on the move. Overall a tidy pup. Awarded BPD as he just had the edge on condition.

2 Greens Sikaistaff Black Barrel, Bl/Br pup at a slightly different stage of maturity as 1st but none the less showing similar virtues of balance and breed type. I particularly liked the smoothness of his silhouette and transition of neck to withers. Slight tendency to lean forward which stretches the rear legs out to much, this is easily resolved with practice. Moved well.

3 Carr’s Tropical Red Rum At Almostaff.

PD (4)

1 Jones Kamaristaff Royal Rumour, Bl/Br youngster another who displays confidence in the show ring, Head proportions balanced and expression typical. His good front won him first place over 2nd, which is smooth with no looseness at the elbows. Everything else is coming together well especially his brisket, length of rib and loin which is developing nicely. Lots of time for full maturity. Moves out well fore and aft with a sound topline.

2 Hollands Diedenas Billy Miske, Bl/Br pup who has the sweetest of expressions and dark round eyes. Head not as mature as 1st but cleaner, with time proportions should match up. Overall his body shape is pleasing and balanced with some definition of muscle to rear quarters and cut to loin. Plenty time on his side to mature on. Moved well holding his topline.

3 Liggins Highbourne Lordofthedance At Knockon.

JD (8)

1 Lowe & Kaur-Hayres Big Man On Mac Dui Shawrigg JW, Red with White blaze and toes, a young dog who is well matured and developed for his age, overall shape is strong balanced and muscular throughout. Dark round eyes and well placed ears set off his chiselled head. Coat is short and close which is always great to see and feel that combined with his lovely rib and cut loin complete the package. Powerful rear quarters drove him up the mat holding his topline. Slightly better rear quarters just gave him the edge over 2nd and up with the top contenders today.

2 Wilson & Rodger’s Bienn A Bhuird With Azzgem, Red with White chest, collar and socks, dark mask pigmentation on a strong balanced head with the darkest of eyes gives this lad such a keen expression, I later found out that he was the brother of 1st place so it came as no surprise that they shared many of the virtues described above. He’s well put together with fabulous front brisket and rib, tidier feet than 1st and tends to push forward a little when stacked which effects his outline, something to be corrected. On the move he went with drive in parallel topline held throughout. Very nice boy.

3 Durells Hamason Greatest Showman.

YD (10,2)

1 Stanways Waystaff Strikes Mayhem, Wh/Red Pied, muscular male whose is so well balanced, his body contours flow smoothly giving a fabulous outline. So happy and excitable he makes life difficult for his handler but when he’s settled you get to appreciate his many virtues including cleanness of his strong head, darkest of eyes and wide deep muzzle. The balance of his front is spot on and in profile everything just looks right from his fore-chest to his tail his wide deep hams just finishing of the picture. When he moves he moves, parallel for and aft, driving on while holding a solid topline. Show in fabulous fit condition. Went on to be my RCC winner.

2 Reynolds Niatona Wreck It Ralph, Red with White chest, collar, socks and flash to head, young dog attributed with many virtues, nothing course or overdone, balanced throughout. Clean head of good proportions, dark eye well placed ears and black pigmentation all make for a good keen expressions. Front and all quarters are well balanced and muscular, I would like to see a little more cut and definition to his loin as this will definitely enhance his profile further. Moves with such ease and drive in parallel, topline sound. Unfortunate to come up against 1st today I just preferred his fitter outline and rear quarters.

3 Yates Zakdan Devious Devil JW.

ND (3,1)

1 Hemstock & Sanjesh Jolihem Phileas Fog, Red with White chest, collar and socks, well matured body of great substance on a young lad and a bit of a handful for the owner. Strong head which is well proportioned dark eye and fabulous black masking over a strong muzzle and underjaw. Body is strong muscular and defined with powerful wide rear quarters. He does I feel need just that little more on the leg to create the image of total balance which may still come as he is only just out of puppy and has time. Once he settled he moved out with drive holding his topline.

2 Cychols Kylestaff The Hitman, Bl/Br small white markings to chest, very much a puppy and quite immature in most areas, another who was a bit of a handful. Dark eye with muzzle and underjaw showing to be developing well, front still a bit loose but with maturity should tighten up just needs time which he has to develop on. Took time to settle on the move but when he focuses he moves fine holding his topline. Lost out to 1st on front assemble and maturity.

GD (3)

1 Thomas Biggleswick Mr Tom, Red with small white patch on chest, the colour of this dog is truly rich and the fact that it was gleaming enhanced his muscular body. Lovely head piece darkest of eyes and clean black masked muzzle and underjaw make for a classic expression. From all angles he’s sound, balanced muscular and defined with a well cut loin and powerful wide deep hams, with those he powered with drive up and down the mat holding his topline. One to watch.

2 Marshallsays Fergustaff Tudor Legacy Red with White head , collar, chest and socks, compact package, well balanced and full of breed type. Beautiful headpiece with dark eyes thin small well placed ears, lips clean good underjaw. Lines are smooth and just blend from one area of his body to another. Topline is notably level in freestand and with well muscled rear quarters he drives easily up the mat parallel for and aft that topline not moving. Lost out to 1st on condition, I’d liked to have seen more definition and cut from rib over the loin which would have made such a difference.

3 Mayers Maynestaff Smooth Criminal.

PGD (7,1)

1 Day & Thomas Goldwyn First Edition To Jayalix, Red with White chest, first thing I noticed was his striking head and keen alert disposition, eyes are dark enhanced by dark rims, strong fore-face with black masking gives for a lovey expression. Good front which is proportionate and balanced. Loin is cut well, super rib and rear quarters which show muscular definition. Slightly over stretches his rear legs when stacked which intern makes his topline look as if it slopes down something to be aware of and corrected. Moves out well parallel and with drive holding his topline.

2 Rutherfords Niatona All Above Board Red with white face, red eye patches, white chest and socks, the markings on this lads classic head totally throw the eye and you need to look past them to appreciate the virtues, eyes dark and round, thinnest of neat ears and strong proportionate muzzle and underjaw. Compact well toned muscular body with good angulation. Good length to rib and as close coupled as required. He also has one of the shortest close coats in pristine condition that’s out there. Moved with drive for his handler topline held. Lost out to 1st place as just preferred his front and alertness.

Head clean and masculine with a powerful muzzle and underjaw, eyes and small thin ears set well giving a true stafford expression. From all angles he is well balanced, great underline shows good length to his well sprung rib finished off with well defined loin, not forgetting his powerful wide well muscled rear quarters. Moves out with drive and purpose, in parallel for and aft holding a solid topline. Totally focused throughout, shown in fabulous fit condition and tone, he wanted to win today and win he did. Pleasure to go on to award him Dog CC and then BOB. Today he gained his 3rd CC.

2 Goughs Manark Made To Measure, Red with White chest, classic headpiece on this lad who never took his dark round eyes off me, good strength to underjaw with clean lip, ears small, thin and well placed enhancing his expression. Body well muscled and defined with powerful rear quarters, hams firm and deep which he used well to drive on up the mat parallel in both directions. Unlucky to come up against 1st today who was on top form.

3 Biddlestone Pridesdale Red Gunner.
