Birmingham National 22 Judge

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 22 Judge: Mrs Jodie Sing (Australia) An invitation like this is a great honour, for a society that has such a history in the UK as the oldest All Breeds Society in the country. And the very first place Staffords had CCs in 1936. I would like to take this chance to thank the officers and committee of the Birmingham National Committee for such a wonderful opportunity to judge my chosen breed and what I consider the best breed in the world, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Thank you to my two stewards, Rob Isleton and Laureen Thomas, you both did a wonderful job, kept things running smoothly with good humour and professionalism. Thank you to my travelling companion/hosts, Claire and Stew for your hospitality and friendship. Congratulations must go to the committee, such a huge event with special mention to Gary Hinsley. I was well catered for, no detail left out; I enjoyed every moment, another great lot of memories for me. I always feel so welcome when visiting, this time was no exception. Was great once again to see familiar faces sitting ringside after such a long time, we can all get back to doing what we all love. The venue was most impressive with new green carpet lined rings a real classy touch. I’d like to thank the exhibitors who entered and sought my opinion, also for excepting my decisions, sportingly, the whole feel of the day was a real pleasure to witness. I was spoilt for choice and extremely happy with my winners. Lots of good dogs that simply, there weren’t enough awards for. Overall, I was impressed with the breed type and consistency in some classes, interesting to look at my catalogue and winners afterwards and see there was a common theme. The day started with a minute’s clapping for those that we have lost within the breed recently, that in their time contributed their own part in history to preserve, promote, and protect our breed. Max King (UK), Tommy Curd (UK), Gary Ousman (SA), Keith Love (SA), Andrea Kilkenny (USA), Jack Miller (UK), Tommy Dix (UK), Jim Bolton (UK). Their contribution is a piece in the pages of history in our breed that future generations can read about and admire. I think it is very fitting to pay respect when we can, and we are all fortunate to have known and learned from these Stafford men and women, thank you and God speed to you all. Well presented by Alan Hedges. My main winners were what I envisaged both sexes to be. I was thrilled to watch the lovely veteran go on to win the Veteran Terrier Group, I’m sure everyone heard the mad Australian yelling ringside. And then the Puppy bitch go on to win 3rd in Puppy Terrier Group, the look on that young man’s face, will stay with me forever, and that’s what it’s all about. I think a universal problem we have in the breed is the lack of width and depth of chest and spring of rib, which a Stafford needs at capacity for heart and lung room. Being originally bred for fighting, I feel whilst we are no longer having them perform their grizzly past, some would struggle to do the task with shallow bodies, fine bones, and frames, and weak over angulated hindquarters. Something to consider when breeding. Feet on some exhibits could do with attention, a trim of nails and more exercise to tighten up weak pasterns and flat toes. Some tails were carried high and over the back. Whilst I can appreciate, they tend to do it when excited, the standard calls for tails to be carried low, likened to an old fashioned pump handle. Just something to watch for when breeding also. General fitness was good, although when it comes to splitting hairs if a dog is not fit it can help in the ultimate decision for me. Some promising youngsters that are sure to keep the breed healthy. I saw no cause for concern in the welfare side, which made my decision easy when it came to filling out the welfare form at the end of the day. An enjoyable day for me, I thank you all once again for showing your wonderful dogs too me. I encourage anyone invited to judge this appointment, to take the opportunity, a truly memorable experience. Thanks again for your Invitation. 1 Wilson’s Northstaff Nightmare. Black Brindle/White. An eyecatching puppy that has a well chiselled head of correct proportions, clean muzzle, scissor bite, round dark eyes, and neat rose ears. He has a typical keen expression, tight lips, wide underjaw, and dark pigmentation. He was alert, and on his toes, taking everything in his stride, a true showman in the making. Lovely profile with ample boned front and tight well padded feet. Coat short and close. Short coupled, developing hindquarters and tail set correct. He moved out confidently, kept a level topline. A tidy puppy that has all I look for at this stage of development. Handled well. 2 Gardner’s Labrastaff Espresso. Black Brindle/White. Another impressive puppy that has plenty of virtues, slightly larger all over than first at this stage, he has a clean head of good proportions, dark eyes, neat rose ears with thin leathers. Scissor bite. Short neck into well boned front, tight neat feet. He is short in back and kept a level topline on the move. He has correct hind angulation and parallel hocks, his coat was gleaming, seemed to enjoy his time out there, another nice puppy, just preferred the expression of number one. I’m sure he will go on to give his owner a lot of fun. 3 Kirk’s Kirstaff The First Avenger. 1 Yates’ ZakDan Devious Devil. Back Brindle. Really liked this naughty puppy, full of cheek, looks and personality plus, just how I like them, he certainly let me know he was there, barking at me whenever I looked in his direction. A lovely headed puppy with typical expression and round dark eyes. He has a wide well angled front that has plenty of bone for his frame, spring of rib, good tuck up. Neat well padded feet. Dark pigmentation. Small neat thin rose ears. Blunt muzzle. Short muscular neck and level topline that you got a glimpse at when he settled and moved out well. Liked his profile. He certainly kept me and his handler entertained. Another I really liked. One that I will watch in the future. 2 Butler’s Alport On Tour. Black Brindle. Another classy puppy that was clean headed, balanced from all angles, dark eyes, blunt muzzle of good length with tight lips. Scissor bite. Neat rose ears. Short muscular neck, front is a little tight could develop more with maturity. Neat well padded feet and dark pigmentation. Short coupled. Coat was short and close. Hindquarters and second thigh developing nicely. Correct tail set. He kept his topline when moving. A tidy package. Handled well. 3 Mayer’s Maynestaff Smooth Criminal. 1 Couzens & Coombes’ Niatona Arlo Coombes. Red/white. “Sound as a pound” is what my notes say first off, this boy is a joy to watch move. His head is of good proportions with neat rose ears finishing off his keen typical expression. Dark eyes. Scissor bite. Wide nostrils, dark pigmentation. He has a short muscular neck into a wide impressive front that has depth of brisket and spring of rib into tuck up in loin. Level topline. Tail set correct and carried low, he powers along with his muscular hindquarters and parallel hocks. Has a balanced profile. Handled well. 2 Mayer’s Maynestaff Smooth Criminal. Black Brindle. A clean headed dog who has decent width and depth through the skull, blunt muzzle of good length. Scissor bite. Round dark eyes. Wide Nostrils. Rose ears finished off his expression when he alerted. Short muscular neck into straight front, would like more depth of brisket, but he is young and plenty of time for him. Well boned for frame and neat tight feet. He moved along well with purpose and kept his topline whilst doing so. Another that was handled well. 3 White’s Tarbhgorm Bold Ruler. 1 James’ Luthais Loch Ness. Black Brindle. A standard sized dog that was well balanced from any angle viewed, free from exaggerations. He has a clean head of good proportions with dark round eyes and neat rose ears when he alerted as he was a bit flat today and regardless of what his young handler tried, he wasn’t interested in alerting to express them much. Dark pigmentation, wide nostrils, and Scissor bite. He has sufficient bone for his frame. Tight, neat, well padded feet. Muscular neck into well angled front, with width and sufficient depth. Level top line. His coat is close and tight. Muscular and fit his hindquarters powered him out and back, hocks parallel, correct tail set. Worked well with his young handler, a tidy dog I liked a lot, wish them both the best going forward. 2 Boggins & Burton’s Luthais Loch Tay JW. Brindle. Litter brother to first, two lovely standard dogs that could switch places on any given day. Another one that displayed his tenacity. Close decision, a bit more substance than his brother, gave the illusion of not as much leg under him, however he is balanced. Fitness played a factor here for me, this dog like his brother had a clean head of good proportions, plenty of underjaw, muzzle of good length, scissor bite, free from any excess flesh. Dark round eyes. Neat rose ears crowned his head. Short muscular neck into wide well boned front, up on pasterns with neat tight feet. Level top line into a correctly angled set of hindquarters. He moved with purpose and drive. Another one I really liked and am predicting should worry the best and go all the way. A lovely pair of dogs, well done to their breeder. 3 Clark’s Ortizo Powerpack Lachlin Dorin JW. 1 Jefferson’s Alport Bold Ruler. Black Brindle. This dog ticked all the right boxes for me, he is standard sized has a strong well chiselled head without exaggerations and good proportions deep through with blunt muzzle and tight lips. Scissor bite. His eye shape is round although I would prefer his eyes darker, this did not detract from his obvious qualities and abundant virtues. Neat rose ears with thin leathers, strong neck tapering into a wide correctly angled front that has correct amount of bone for his frame and size. Short coupled. Plenty of rib and depth through the body with tuck up in loin, and a set of muscular well angulated hindquarters that were hard to the touch. He moved with purpose and kept his topline. 2 Funnell’s Powerpack Tam O’ Shanter JW. Black Brindle/White. Strong headed dog with clean typical expression, round dark eyes, scissor bite and neat ears. He has a straight front, would like to see more depth and width, longer cast than first place but still maintains his topline on the move. Has adequate depth through his hindquarters and moved along well. Will settle with time and give his handler some fun is my prediction. 3 Walker’s Georgie Poergie Pops At Teshleystaf. Largest class of the day. Had to split the class in two to prevent any confrontations, we protect the breed by not making situations that could cause problems. As I said, not enough places to award in some cases, a very competitive class. 1 Parker’s Jackabyte Boletoro At Nettleworth. Black Brindle. An eyecatching dog of standard size. Took my attention on first glimpse, hoping on closer inspection he would tick all the boxes, I wasn’t disappointed. He has class from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Exemplified breed type, and masculinity in a male Stafford, without exaggerations. Balanced from all angles, he has a super expression with piercing dark round eyes, rose ears he used when he alerted. His skull is deep through of correct proportions, wide underjaw, blunt muzzle, scissor bite. Pronounced cheek muscles and ample fill under the eye. Black pigmentation. Well laid shoulders into straight front, on strong boned legs with neat tidy manicured feet. Short back with plenty of tuck and a muscular set of correctly angled hindquarters, tail set and carriage correct. His coat was short, close, and gleaming. Presented in first class condition. Handled to his advantage, he powered up and down the ring, I never got tired of watching him. A standout in the line-up for me and an easy decision to award him Dog Challenge, well done to his breeders/owners, one I will watch his future career with interest. 2 Burrows’ Rossobull Iggle Piggle. Brindle/White. A tidy dog with an impressive head of good proportions, blunt clean muzzle, scissor bite, round eyes that could be darker but compared to coat colour totally acceptable. He has a pair of thin leathered rose ears that frame his head to give him his appealing expression. Unfortunate to meet with first place, straight well boned front well padded feet. Ample rib and tuck, hindquarters are muscular with parallel hocks, level topline. He moved along well with his handler, who got the best out of him. 3 Waltham’s Dringshaw Athos JW. OD (8, 1) Another class where places could change on any given day, three impressive Staffords. 1 Arntzen & Manito’s D UK Ch Catstaff’s Used To. Black Brindle. I don’t like the old cliché of ‘what can I say that hasn’t been said about this dog’. So, I will have my two cents, to add to his enviable list of compliments. A worthy Champion, He has many virtues that are lacking in our breed today. An impressive dog, with plenty of substance for his size. He has tremendous spring of rib, heart and lung room with depth and width, a real delight to view from both side and above, into a tidy waist (tuck up). His head has proper proportions with correct ratios, his eye shape is round, his ears are well positioned on the head. He was just pipped at the post in the final line-up with his overall expression. His powerful hindquarters served him well when moving being well defined and hard to the touch, he was turned out in first class condition, and handled expertly as I can see he is a handful. His overall profile is very pleasing as he is well balanced, it was a close decision for me today. Well done to his breeders/owners. Res Challenge Dog. 2 Norton’s UK Ch Taraiel Stormzy Of Tikkurilan. Black Brindle. Athletic dog with pleasing profile, impressive headpiece with no exaggerations, round dark eyes, with a keen alert expression. Scissor bite. Muscular neck into well angled front, with feet correctly turning out at pasterns on neat padded feet, adequate bone for frame, plenty of width in front. Well angulated in front and rear, moved well when settled. 3 Corcoran’s Jun Ch Molru The Navigator Jun Ch. 1 Lewis & Lewis’ UK Ch Biggleswick Splash Of Ginge. Red/White/Black Mask. When I started in the breed as a kid, this is the ‘type’ of Stafford I remember. This dog could offer a lot to the breed as he possesses the important construction ingredients that seem to be disappearing. He is not coarse; he has plenty of substance without being bunchy or overloaded. A cracking head with no excess flesh, dark round eyes and thin leathered ears. Scissor bite. Muscular short neck into wide front with depth of brisket, plenty of bone turn out at pasterns and neat feet. He has barrel of rib with tuck up in loin and a pair of tremendous hindquarters that are deep through and powerful. He was turned out as one of the fittest of the day which for a veteran is impressive. Coat was short and gleaming. He loved every minute of being in the ring and worked in unison with his owner. I was delighted to see him win the Veteran Terrier group later in the day, absolutely over the moon for his dedicated owners. Well done. 2 Mayren’s UK Ch Bellarouge Adonis At Fergiestaffs JW. White/Red Pied. A classy dog with the cleanest of outlines, classic headpiece with tight lips, round dark appealing eyes and thin rose ears. Dark Pigmentation. He has a straight front with neat feet, well ribbed back and tuck up in loin. Level topline. Tail set is correct, carried a bit high. Muscular set of hindquarters with parallel hocks. He moved well. Just preferred overall balance of first place but another dog well worthy of his title. 3 Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlana JW ShCM. 1 Bunt & Noonan’s Skyestaff Fall Into Line. Black Brindle. A tidy bitch with a lovely head piece without any exaggerations, clean lipped round dark eyes, set of neat ears. Scissor bite. She has a straight front with ample width and up on pastern with tight feet. Plenty of depth through body, well ribbed back and tuck up. Could be fitter but moved nicely and kept her topline on the move. Handled well. 2 Hands’ Skyestaff Dress To Impress. Black Brindle. Clean headed bitch with many qualities, dark round eyes, clean blunt muzzle. Ears were thin and set well on the head, could be tidier. Good length of neck in straight front slightly upright in shoulder. Level topline and muscular hindquarters, she is shorter in back than first place just preferred outline of first place. A tidy package that seemed to enjoy her time out there, moved along well. 3 Zaharia’s Staff Dream Ornella Mutti. 1 Crawford & Wilson’s Northstaff Bay Bomber. Black Brindle/White. An eyecatching puppy that stood out for me. Right up my street. She has a beautiful head that is clean, feminine with a typical expression that is most appealing. Dark round eyes, neat rose ears finished off the picture. Scissor bite. Correct length of neck into a straight well boned front. Body is developing nicely. Has a level topline and set of well angled hindquarters, correct tail set and carriage. She worked as part of a team with her handler and they were a picture to watch together. Later in the day she was also awarded third in the Terrier Puppy Group. The absolute shock on this young man’s face, a joy to behold. A promising puppy that I predict will have a successful future. Congratulations to her breeders/owners. Good luck. Best Puppy In Breed. 2 Hammond’s Hammystaff Love Bomb. White/Red. Still a baby but is all there as far as substance without being coarse she has a lovely head of good proportions, Blackest of eyes that are round and keen. Wide muzzle, deep through that houses a correct scissor bite. Black pigmentation lines her lips. Open nostrils and wide underjaw. She has a muscular neck leading into a wide front. Plenty of bone for size, spring of rib, good tuck, short in back and a developing set of muscular hindquarters that are defined already with apparent second thigh. She kept her topline moving, covering the ground well. Although different from first place in type she is a lovely puppy and both types can be awarded as both too me are correct, and too be appreciated for what they are, they could swap places on any day. Another lovely puppy I predict will give her owner some fun. 3 McConnachie’s Calgacus Niamh. PB (8) 1 Mayer’s Maynestaff The Girl Is Mine. Black Brindle. Alert always, another lovely puppy. 2 Thompson’s Alport Dark Queen. Black Brindle. Pleasing head on this girl, free of exaggeration, skull has depth and width with dark round eyes placed well apart, blunt muzzle and stop to give a pleasing side on head profile. Her ears are small set well on the head, could be tighter. She has a straight front on tidy feet. Well angled shoulders into a short backed body with of depth of brisket spring of rib, through too her developing hindquarters, her topline was level and she was animated and happy enjoying her time in the ring. 3 Rowe & South’s Illori Constellation. 1 Wall’s Goldwyn Shes The One.
