SKYE WELSH KENNEL CLUB 09 Judge: Mrs S M Court SKYE JUDGE WELSH KC 09 Skye Terriers It is a couple of years since I last judged my favourite breed & I noticed some changes – some very good & some not so good. Temperament has improved so very much the breeders & owners must be congratulated, gone are the days when exhibitors would hang onto their dogs with a vice-like grip before the judge could examine them. All here today stood proud on the table ready for the judge, not even a rolling white of an eye to be seen – well done. Presentation has improved so much & save for a couple of nasty exceptions all exhibits where immaculately clean & knot free – something I appreciated as many of you know. Only a few lose fronts but oh dear what has happened at the other end? A Skye should have good powerful buttocks with some width, as in other terriers. I was surprised to see so many poor backends, yes they were muscled but moved so closely we where in danger of starting a fire! Please, when planning a litter keep this in mind & yes my usual gripe. We must never forget that a Skye is a strong dog, not the longest dog in the world – balance is so important. PD (1) 1 Miller's Feorlig Arfur Sixpence, black youngster with a good head, eye & bite. Would like a little tighter earset but he is very young & everything is new to him, good neck & topline, well muscled hindquarters, carries his tail well. BP. JD (2) 1 Bailey & Hansel’s Mighty Mouse by Marjayn, eyecatching young cream dog with good black points, correct masculine head with a strong skull, well set ears good neck & shoulders, level topline, good length of rib to loin, really well muscled hindquarters, good tailset, in first class order with good straight coat. A little close behind; 2 King’s Celticbridge North Wind, good head & neck. Front could be tighter & topline firmer. Good strong rear, nice tailset, hard straight coat. PGD (2) A. LD (2) 1 Parker’s Glorfindel Basil Brush, this dog is very eyecatching as he enters the ring on a loose lead, he has a classic head & expression, his pale silver coat is shown in excellent condition & he has such good black pigment, good neck & shoulders, level topline, strong broad hindquarters & well carried tail, moves freely. RCC; 2 Samuel's Skyelander Wee Man Of Storr, a true drop ear with that lovely strong skull & wide ears lying closely to his cheeks, he has no glaring faults & was no way disgraced by being placed 2nd, his front is good as his topline & hindquarters are, he carries his tail well & was shown in first class order, one of the nicest drop ears I have seen for a while. OD (5) What an enjoyable class. 1 Woodhead’s Ch Knowlespring Sunday Best, this dog fits the Standard & is a joy to go over, his head is perfection with strength & length & well placed ears with good dark points to complement his silver, well presented coat, he has a powerful but elegant neck good front assembly, strong firm topline with good length of rib, short loin, strong rounded buttocks with dog behind the tail which is well carried, moves knowing he is something special & well deserved CC; 2 Marshall’s Ch The Black Touch of Morningsky at Glorfindel, well known ch dog who deserves his title, he is an imposing dog with a good head, strong well muscled neck, firm topline with good length, good rearend, moves well, just a little to much of him for me; 3 Barraclough’s Ch Skyeotts Midnight Majesty of Wemoway. PB (2) 1 King’s Celticbridge Northern Star, cream baby with good length of body, nice head & expression with OK front, good length of rib to loin, strong rearend, well carried tail, good straight coat; 2 Miller’s Feorlig Angel Dust, pretty immature baby who enjoyed herself. I liked her size & make up, she is very promising, pretty head, good neck, shoulders & topline, just gave so much away in her immaturity. JB (2,1) 1 Bailey & Hansel’s Celticbridge My Lady by Marjayn, not a big bitch but very nicely balanced length to height ratio, feminine head, good neck & shoulders, firm topline, well muscled rearend with well carried tail, moved freely, just needs time. PGB (4) 1 McLeod’s Esgia’s Sula The Late Edition, a bitch who when I looked at her made me smile, she is so very happy without being over the top, she has a very good feminine head & good earset, graceful crested neck, good front assembly, firm level topline, really well muscled rearend with enough width for her to really drive her around the ring, an overall nice bitch who should do well when older; 2 Samuel’s Skyelander Midnight Dream, larger type than 1 who could do with losing a pound or two & it would really make a difference. Very pleasing head & expression, good neck & shoulders, topline & backend, she moves well & freely, I really liked her although she was a shade on the big side; 3 Downes’ Jeraro’s S’Wonderful of Tsuki. LB (2) 1 Marshall’s Glorfindel Betty Boop, what a beautifully balanced bitch this is, she is of correct size & shape, feminine head, yet still with width of skull, good earset with those all-important black fringes & no they are not the icing on the cake – they are required in the Standard! She has a good neck & shoulder assembly with a forechest, good topline with a nice long rib & short loin, well rounded backend, good tail set, moves freely & finishes the picture with a straight silver coat which is very well presented. CC & BOB & would gladly have taken her home; 2 White’s Knowlespring You’re Wicked by Gunshoe, cream bitch who was clearly out of coat. Nice construction but lacking condition. OB (4) 1 Barraclough’s Ch Skyeotts Amensix High Skye Miracle at Wemoway, another true drop ear of lovely quality, this exhibitor really flies the flag for the drop eared Skye so well, she has a feminine head but with good strength, powerful neck, good straight front, she is long, low & level & moves freely shown, as all from this kennel are, in wonderful coat & condition, just a fraction too much of her for me. RCC; 2 Curtis’ Ch Tsuki Solastar of Brakewill, striking cream with those lovely black points, she has a lovely head & expression, crested neck flowing into a good topline & body, well constructed rearend with well carried tail; 3 Miller’s Ch Feorlig Something Wicked.
