WELKS 13 Judge

SKYE WELKS 13 Judge(s): MR COLIN RICHARDSON Skye Terriers I would like to thank the exhibitors who exhibited their dogs for me to judge. They were all in a clean condition & well presented, as far as the windy conditions would allow. It is a great shame that entries seem to be falling, adult dog entries in particular. It is always difficult when one dog dominates the breed & it can have a retrograde effect. I do feel that once a dog has four or five CCs it is no more a champion for winning 20 CCs; in a numerically small breed it can have a disproportionate effect. Other mature dogs don’t enter, the dominant dog then wins again, it is almost a self-fulfilling situation. I know when we were campaigning Dudley he had seven or eight RCCs behind the same dog before breaking through. To quote Dale Winton on his lottery show 'You’ve got to be in it to win it'. Overall I thought the quality was good & I was very pleased with my winners. What did concern me was that I found several fiddle fronts & two cases of possible premature closure. It is easy to spot if you know what to look for. Some dogs were rather long in loin which could store up back problems later. I was pleased with my BOB, Ch Salena The Special One, a mature silver dog of quality. I was pleased to see he took G4. BCC was Celticbridge My Lady by Marjayn, this was her first CC & I am sure she will make up. She so reminded me of our Ch Talyot Genevieve in make & shape. BP was the dark silver dog Gumshoe Moses Jones who beat his sister for the top puppy spot. Both were lovely puppies & have a great deal to admire about them & once they mature, will trouble the best. Presentation & temperament were very good, only had one that grumbled a bit. Size fitted the Standard well as also did the ratio of length to height, 2 to 1. The breeders & exhibitors are to be commended for their time & effort in the preparation of their charges. PD (1) 1 BP, White’s Gumshoe Moses Jones, what a lovely dark silver boy, he took his time to settle but it was well worth the wait. Really super head, strong head with good bite & underjaw, ear placement was good with good growth of fringes, powerful neck into good forehand, well ribbed with short loin, good rear angulation & tailset. Once he concentrated, moved well for a young puppy. A close run thing for BP with his litter sister, he was a bit more mature. JD (1) 1 Curtis’ Brakemill Barnum, cream boy who I have watched from the ringside with interest. Masculine head with good earset, correct depth & shape of brisket, a little long in loin. Good rear angulation, moved with drive. PGD (2) 1 RCC, Parker’s Glorfindel Deacon Brodie, dark silver dog of quality as one would expect from this dog’s breeder. Once his owner can get him to concentrate more on the job in hand, he should do well. Lovely head of correct proportions, good bite & underjaw, excellent forequarters with correct length of loin. One of the best fronts on the day. Very pleasing rear angulation with correct tailset, moved with drive; 2 King’s Celticbridge Man Of Steel, drop eared silver with excellent coat texture. Needs more ring training. Correctly proportioned head, good bite & underjaw, very good forehand & rear angulation. Good tailset, but he was erratic on the move. LD (1) A. OD (1) 1 CC & BOB, Breeze’s Ch Salena The Special One, mature silver prick eared dog, presentation was excellent. It was a shame that he stood alone but that did not detract from his win. I do not intend to go into great detail as much has been written about this dog already. Pleasing head with lovely expression, correct bite with strong teeth & underjaw, good ear placement, forehand is good with spring of rib & plenty of heartroom, short loin, rear angulation OK. Moved a little erratically but did enough to take CC. PB (2) 1 Hartfield’s Gumshoe Shot In The Dark at Moshanta, 8 months precocious dark silver puppy, litter sister to 2 & similar remarks apply to the second. Very feminine young lady who went around the ring as if she owned it. Beautiful head & expression, good bite & strong teeth, clean neck flowing into excellent forehand, correct length & shape of ribcage with plenty of heart room, level topline, moved very well. Lost out in the challenge to her brother who was a little bit more mature; 2 White’s Gumshoe Silent Witness, another lovely puppy who spoilt her chance by wanting to go around the ring smelling the grass. I am sure once she gets her head sorted out she & her sister will trouble the best. My comments re winner of class apply to this young lady. JB (1) 1 Curtis’ Brakemill Briar Rose, silver 13 months litter sister to the winner of JD & very similar in type. Pleasing head of correct proportion with good earset, scissor bite, good reach of neck going into well laid shoulders, depth of chest OK, length of loin good, correct rear angulation, moved well. PGB (2) This was a difficult class to judge, two different types. 1 Green’s Verony Night Sky, this is quite a nice young bitch who has a lot going for her, however the handler needs to show the dog better. When the bitch was being stacked she lost her topline, however on the move she was dead level. Silver prick eared, pleasing feminine head with good earset, good length of neck & excellent forehand, correct length of loin & rear angulation, good tailset; 2 Hudson’s Salena Black Magic, good in profile however has poor front. LB (0). OB (5) 1 CC, Bailey & Hansell’s Celticbridge My Lady by Marjayn, I have not seen this bitch before & she reminded me so much of our Ch T Genevieve. As Peter Chappell said of Genevieve when he gave her the 3rd CC, here is an old fashioned Skye; & this applies to my winner. No exaggeration, absolutely level topline standing & on the move. Yes she was carrying a couple of pounds but that did not detract from her overall quality. Silver bitch of excellent type, excellent construction all through, feminine head with lovely expression, correct bite with large teeth & punishing jaw, good ear placement & feathering, elegant crested neck flowing into well laid back shoulders, shoulder placement is very good with correct length of scapula to upper arm allowing her to move effortlessly around the ring. Good spring of rib with plenty of heartroom, short loin, good rear angulation & short hocks which complements the forehand. If she had been carrying less weight she would have had BOB; 2 Barraclough’s Ch/Sw Ch Skyeotts Amnesix High Sky at Wemoway, black drop eared quality bitch out of the top drawer who was unfortunate to meet 1. Different type & typical coat for her colouration, pleasing head with well placed ears, good bite with large teeth & powerful jaws, good shoulder placement & length of rib with plenty of heartroom, well angulated rear produced good movement; 3 White’s Knowlespring Your Nicked at Gumshoe.
