SKYE JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 13

Skye Terriers

My thanks to the exhibitors for an interesting experience; it was that old ever eternal question that confronted me of best dog verses best Skye (conformation verses type) & the equation has changed since I last judged. Then that so required long rib with shorter loin, to give to desired topline, was noticeably lacking but here the shorter rib was certainly in the minority. So compliments there. Fronts still require work, the front leg is supposed to be a wrap around the chest & not a stick out at elbow. The really big question that struck me again & again though was when did movement become a plod? The Skye is supposed to have a ‘free movement, active & effortless that gives a more or less fluid picture’ & yes the word less is there but should that mean not really at all? Admittedly the weather has been atrocious but it hasn’t been so all winter so there isn’t that much excuse for such a lack of muscletone particularly when one exhibitor, in a very rural location, presented all his dogs superb in this department.

The Skye temperament continues to impress; newer people in the breed don’t realise the strides that have been made in this department, & heads give no cause for concern at all. A specific mention of tails rarely happens but again its compliments on the way the high waving tails are gone & they are back to a continuation of the spine. Skyes, besides length, are coat & presentation & that was varied but not necessarily for the bad. Five present had, what I would term, old fashioned coats. They just did not have the length that is now considered appropriate, and having owned one like this myself, I know how frustrating it can be but in the move towards lack of exaggeration possibly these should be looked at more favourably once more as they are surely nearer the original.

MPD

1 White’s Gumshoe Moses Jones, raw puppy with a lot of promise, strong jaw, good skull, well placed ears, nice crest of neck & a good length of rib. Good reach & drive on the move. Muscle developing nicely behind but a little loose in front which is not surprising at this age. Nice tail carriage. BP.

JD

1 Curtis’ Brakemill Barnum, good head with well placed strong teeth & an expressive eye. Well fringed erect ear set on a neck of adequate length body, outline could be longer but rib is good. Level standing which he holds when moving which he does with a good reach & positive drive, nice muscle behind. Cream coat of good length well presented but shaded as one would expect at this age.

PGD

1 Parker’s Gorfindel Deacon Brodie, good skull with strong jaw & well set teeth, well fringed ears, adequate length of neck, good length of rib. Level topline standing which he lost a little on the move. Movement was balanced but I would have liked more reach & drive.

LD

1 Shuttleworth’s Whicheeta Celtic Keepsake, nice head with strong jaw, flat rib, full coat, level backline while standing not kept so well on the move, another who needed more on the move.

OD

1 Breeze’s Ch Salena The Special One, it would be stupid to pretend this dog isn’t known & to see him move indicates why he is, his movement is absolute textbook Skye Standard, caused by an equally textbook front & hard muscled rear. Excellent rib, fabulous presentation &, yes, he could be a bit longer but the length is more than adequate. Does the breed proud in the big ring. CC & BOB;

2 White’s Talylot Menelaus at Gumshoe, strong headed, full coated, long ribbed & well presented. Would prefer a bit better front. RCC.

MPB

1 White’s Gumshoe Silent Witness, baby who is loose, dippy & everything a youngster this age is. Nice head, the beginnings of a good coat & everything that says promise is there.

JB

1 Cutis’ Brakemill Briar Rose, an older style bitch who lacks coat & also took a while to settle on the move so easy to overlook. Once she got going was worth the wait with her rib, backline, angulation, neck & head giving her the class; 2 Proud’s Salena Midnight Diamond for Dolphaz, nice bitch in lovely coat, topline a bit unstable on the move but sound when stood;

3 Grainger’s Perrylands Georgia.

NB

1 P Georgia, lovely head & ear carriage, tends to dip on the move.

PGB

1 King’s Celticbridge Dancing Comet, beautiful bitch with length of rib & nice crest of neck. Lets herself down on the move;

2 Bell’s Glorfindel Spring Secret, only drop of the entry, wonderful oval rib, movement not her best feature

LB (0).

OB

1 Woodhead’s Ch Knowlespring Mistletoe, the best coloured cream of the day, lovely bitch from nose to tail with everything asked for by the Standard, rib, front, rear, coat she has it all. CC & half-sister to the DCC winner;

2 Shuttleworth’s Whicheeta Celtic Crusader, another older type, flat as a plank walking grey, has everything except the glamour of the, now desired, modern look. RCC;

3 King’s Celtic Bridge Stormy Waters.
