SKYE NATIONAL TERRIER 10 Judge/s:Mrs Margaret MacDonald-Cross (Hamkel) SKYE JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 10
Skye Terrier I was pleased with my entry especially by today’s standards. I found it particularly interesting not having judged the breed for 4 years & getting my hands on most of the current winning dogs (I had, in fact, only previously judged three of the dogs present). Some of the dogs didn’t like our ring – it was in a rather noisy part & many Skyes are very sensitive to noise & it can affect their performance. In this day & age of dog showing becoming a hairdressing/handling contest, it did my heart good to see some of our longer established exhibitors showing their dogs on a loose lead & at their pace – a joy to watch. MPD (1) 1 Richardson’s Talyot Learchus, 8½ months dark silver, lovely head with good dark eye & correct bite, reachy neck, level topline & well carried tail, in correct amount of coat for age, moved with enthusiasm but a bit close behind. Already a big boy & must not grow on. PD (2) 1 Robson’s Knowlespring Daredevil Dan with Mitsui, top quality 11 months cream of correct size, beautiful head & eye, strong jaw with correct bite, well fringed ears with good dark points, reachy neck into good length of level back, made up of good length & depth of rib & short loin, carrying correct amount of quality coat for age & moving soundly, has plenty of drive & correct tail carriage. Needs to carry a little more bodyweight than at present but this will come with maturity. Very nice outline, low to ground, if this young man continues as he promises, surely one for the upperhouse; 2 King’s Little Lone Piper for Celticbridge, 11 months, nice puppy for length & lowness to ground, level topline, good type with well proportioned head & reach of neck, carrying a good body coat for age but needs more head furnishings. Not the finish of 1 & movement a little erratic & a bit too close behind. JD (2) 1 Harrison’s Papplewick Knockando for Trenson, nice typy cream, well proportioned head with good dark eye & expression, well fringed ears with good pigment but carried a little wide, nice neck, lovely front & level backline, low to ground, in good coat of quality, moves very smartly but rather fond of his tail at times; 2 Miller’s Feorlig Arfur Sixpence, dark grey, a month younger than 1, smaller dog all through with good balance of length to height, low to ground, lacks head furnishings & not so well coated, though what he has is of good texture. Needs to carry a lot more bodyweight, feels ribby at present, moves with verve but another moving close behind & thus lacking drive. PGD (2) Here came two creams from the same breeder born on the same day. 1 King’s Celticbridge Northern Star, nicely proportioned head with dark eye & strong jaw, good neck & front assembly, nice length & depth of rib creating a level topline moving & standing, carries good body coat of quality & quantity but lacking head furnishings, good balance of length to height; 2 Bailey & Hansel’s Mighty Mouse by Marjayn, very nice head with dark eye & lovely expression, nicely fringed ears, good neck & nice balance of length to height. Not happy in the ring, scrabbling behind & dropping his topline, not in such good coat as 1. LD (3) Three nice dogs who frequently change places. 1 Parker’s Glorfindel Basil Brush, I’ve admired this dog since a minor puppy, is a delight to go over from his wonderfully proportioned head, dark expressive eyes, strong jaw & perfect bite, through his crested neck, long, level backline to the tip of his well carried tail, excels in length & depth of rib & this whole is covered in a stunning pale silver coat with dark points on his well fringed ears, not for him the technique of stringing up & jacking into position, he floats round the ring on a loose lead at his beautifully measured pace, he really takes me back in time & I have owned Skyes for some 50 years, is a type of Skye that is seldom seen in our rings nowadays & is a total throwback, I see so many of the chs of the past in this dog. CC, his first; 2 Harrison’s Knowlespring Jailhouse Roc for Trenson, no disgrace to stand behind 1, very nice dog, cream with good dark points, excellent headpiece, dark eye, good mouth & jaw, good head furnishings & fringing, though ears held a little wide, good neck & shoulders, fully coated & of good texture, super body properties with good balance of length to height, moved with drive & enthusiasm though rather high tail carriage; 3 Samuel’s Skyelander Wee Man of Storr. OD (5,1) 1 Garland-Collins’ Ch Bhuidh Steamy Windows, old favourite of mine & though now 10½ years this is the first time I have judged him, feels as good to go over as he looks from the ringside, how proud these owners must be of this dog who, at this age, has still to be in contention for CCs, beautifully balanced head with such expressive young looking eyes, full dentition, strong jaw, lovely furnishings & nicely fringed ears, neck is strong into correct front assembly & dead level topline, ribcage is correct for length & depth & loin short, moves so soundly & with such verve reaching out in front & driving well behind carrying his tail correctly, body coat is superb, harsh & straight, a younger dog’s coat in fact, in the challenge for the CC he had to give way to youth. RCC; 2 Breeze’s Ch Salena Black Shadow, much has been written about this dog in recent times & he has done the breed proud, very well balanced dog with a charming head, reachy neck & level topline, well held tail & is normally to be seen flowing round the ring always in accord with his handler but I don’t know what went wrong with this dog unless he was one of those who did not like the ring. Seemed to feel the need to rush ahead on the way up the ring & then was pulling out to the side on the way back, certainly not looking like the Skye we all enjoyed seeing group placed at Crufts on TV, nonetheless, a worthy ch, just not on form; 3 Woodhead’s Knowlespring Sunday Best. MPB 1 White’s Salena Special Effect at Gumshoe, I see in my notes I wrote 8 months today & hating it. This certainly was the case with this pretty bitch, good head & eye, correct bite & nice coat for age, dipped alarmingly on the table but levelled out when she could be persuaded to move, very unsure of herself & one who found the ring noisy & unsettling, standing alone in this class did her no favours as I think the presence of one or two more puppies might have helped, she’ll have many better days, I’m sure. PB (4) 1 Woodhead’s Knowlespring Dream Cream, really beautiful cream bitch of 11 months, gorgeous head with dark eyes & sweet expression, good bite & strong but feminine jaw, head well furnished with lots of dark fringing on her well set ears, super neck really used on the move, is long & low to ground with excellent ribcage & loin ratio, lovely quality coat & when she settles really flows. BPB, just pipped by her slightly more mature brother for BP, if all goes well, one who should be worthy of her title, another ch for this clever breeder; 2 Proud’s Knowlespring Dream Walk to Dolphaz, pale silver, litter sister to 1, really nice youngster with a sweet head & expression, nice neck & holds her topline standing & on the move, low to ground, bodywise there is little separating these two but 1 has better coat quality & tail carriage; 3 King’s Dark Secret at Celticbridge. JB (3,2) 1 Miller’s Feorlig Angel Dust, was a bit unsettled, litter sister to Arfur Sixpence & very similar, nice basic shape of length to height & low to ground, neat head with dark expressive eye, rather lacks head furnishing but body coat better & quality good, nice hind movement when she gets going but front is not so positive. PGB (1) 1 McLeod’s Esgia’s Sula The Late Edition, I have watched this young lady’s progress with interest, is so feminine with a gorgeous head, beautifully fringed ears, such expression in those dark eyes & correct in bite & jaw, used her neck on the move & topline level at all times, if there had been a prize for best coat, she would surely have won it because I can’t think when I last had my hand on such a superb coat for quality & length, thank goodness all those months of snow in Aberdeen did some good, a joy to watch flow round the ring on a loose lead, had to give way to Capercaillie for her extra special balance of length to height but without doubt one who should & I am sure will gain her title. RCC. LB (5,1) 1 Garland-Collin’s Bhuidh Motholeli, dark silver, is just coming into her best, I have admired her from the ringside but always felt she did not give of her best, looking as if she really didn’t want to be there. However, all that has changed as she came into the ring full of confidence, showing off her lovely head & neck, super balance of length to height & level topline, so low to ground, moved soundly with good tail carriage, very nice size, in coat of quality & quantity & sympathetically handled by her owner, if she goes on this way, should also be vying for top honours; 2 Robson’s Lynaire She’s No Lady with Mitsui, dark grey, now 5 years, in no way disgraced to stand behind 1, similar type, lovely feminine head, dark eye & super fringes, good neck which she used & as usual from this owner/handler, put down to the minute in gleaming quality coat, not quite the balance of length to height of 1 but low to ground, really sound mover with well carried tail; 3 Samuel’s Skyelander Midnight Dream. OB (5,2) 1 MacQueen’s Ch Azrakhan Capercaillie, what an elegant bitch. excels in balance of length to height, superb head with dark eye, correct bite with strength of jaw, arched neck & absolutely dead level topline at all times, made up of good length & depth of ribcage, short loin, carries a gorgeous straight coat of such quality. Perhaps not the smallest bitch in the ring but truly feminine throughout & what a mover when she puts her mind to it. I put her & her handler through their paces in the challenge because I know Capercaillie can jig at times but she was on her best behaviour. CC & BOB, I was proud of her in the big ring; 2 Breeze’s Salena She’s The One, pretty & feminine with sweet head & expression, good dark eye, correct bite & nice neck into level topline, does all that is asked of her handler, covering the ground well with good reaching & driving movement, showing all the time. Not quite the coat nor the ring presence of 1 but she is always in contention, a nice exhibit; 3 Woodhead’s Knowlespring She Knows. Breeder 1 Woodhead. |
