SKYE JUDGE LEEDS 23

I would like to thank the exhibitors who exhibited their dogs for me to judge. The entry had stood up quite well considering the economic travails besetting the world outside of dog shows. The entry was high quality although, as always, improvements can be made in certain areas. I hope you will take my comments as coming from someone who has a deep love of the breed after a 40+ year involvement, starting with creams and ending our line with creams having gone through the whole gambit of permitted colours. Height is still a problem with some bitches that wouldn’t look out of place in the dog classes. If you go 1 inch over the height requirement then that equates to an increase of total body mass by 10% and they will not fulfil their primary function of going to ground to seek out prey. We exported one of our bitches to the USA some 20 years ago, to a lady who not only successfully showed her Skyes, but also competed in earth dog trials and barn tests. These were run by a very well respected terrier man, who when he saw the bitch, commented that he hadn’t seen a Skye that could go down a 9 inch pipe for many years. So, we are not alone in having size ‘problems’. Coat colour in creams varied from pure cream, creams with a shawl over the forehand, to an almost biscuit coloured cream, to where blacks had been used in the breeding programme and the resultant failure for the cream coat to clear properly. Many years ago, I was told by several very prominent and successful breeders that, you should never use blacks for that very reason. If you wanted to restore a loss of pigmentation, then use a silver in the ratio of 2 cream to cream matings and 1 silver. If you mate cream to cream over several generations, you will end up with fawns of which I’ve seen 4. I was very pleased with my principal winners. BOB and Best Dog was the silver, Whicheeeta Walk the Walk a nearly 4 year old dog of correct size and proportions. He moved well and kept his profile on the moved. I do not understand why he hasn’t been made up yet. Best Bitch was the cream Black Cuillins Catriona JW (Imp) Deu. A lovely free moving 15 month bitch, who still has time for her coat to clear more to complete the picture. Best Veteran was the black bitch Perrylands Bentara, this ‘young’ bitch of 8 1⁄2 years was thoroughly enjoying her day and moved beautifully. My RCC winners were also excellent examples of the breed and in no way diminished by their placements behind the eventual winners. DRCC was Rhoderns Hamish a silver of excellent coat and type. My BRCC was Kilfinan Nightingale The breeders and exhibitors are to be commended for their time and effort in the preparation of their charges.

PGD (1)

For some reason all of the dogs in this class were unsettled

1 Burscough & Grimshaw’s Kilfinan Gail’s Legacy at Jamalisson This dogs heritage was obvious and I am very sure that if Gail could see him, she would have been very happy. He was the least unsettled of the 3 dogs on the move. He has a pleasing head and expression with good earset. Strong neck flowing into well laid back shoulders. Correct length of rib with heartroom. Loin length was correct Good rear angulation, good if erratic movement

2 Mclean & Weir’s Kometam Rossi Nazareth. Clear cream with wonderful ear placement and pigmentation. Lovely head and expression. Nice length of neck, shoulder placement OK. Good length of rib, short loin. Seemed a little unsettled on the move.

3 Turner’s Olivia Knowlespring Quincy ShCEx

What a lovely class with all the dogs worthy of high honours and quality

1 BOB, DCC Shuttleworth’s Whicheeta Walk the Walk. Quality dog so very sound with the three L’s. I had seen this dog before from outside the ring and when I saw him in the ring I thought he was so very correct. Epitomises the 3Ls. It was an honour to judge him. Everything about him oozes quality. Strong head with lovely expression. Correct bite with strong teeth & punishing jaw. Good ear placement. Strong crested neck flowing into well laid back shoulders. Forehand is very good with corlittle rect length of scapula to upper arm which allows him to move with drive and purpose. Good spring of rib with plenty of heartroom, short loin. Good pelvic & rear angulation & short hocks which complements the forehand. Moves effortlessly around the ring because of his sound construction. I hope he doesn’t have to wait too long for his title.

2 Bailey’s Rhoderns Haggis at Marjayn. Unfortunate to meet 1, however another fine representative of the breed. Beautiful correct cream dog with lovely pigmentation. Good head with powerful jaws and correct scissor bite. Lovely expression. Good length of rib. He was a little unsettled on the moved as he seemed a little unhappy with his surroundings today. I am sure he will get himself together soon, he was not disgraced in such good company. Another that I hope doesn’t have to wait too long for his title

3 Mclean & Weir’s Knowlespring Jackpot at Rhoderns. Another excellent example of a male Skye powerful but of correct proportions. Not over done in anyway.

Well laid shoulders and good body proportions. One of the best croups and tailsets of the day. Kept her topline on the move. Well done

2 Whitelaw’s Madaza Star. Pleasing shaded cream bitch. Proportionate head with reasonable neck and forehand. Level topline which she kept on the move

3 Riskertree Ruaridh at Birkenstar The solitary male in the class.

Shoulder placement is very good with correct length ratio of scapula to upper arm allowing her good movement around the ring. Good spring of rib with plenty of heartroom, short loin. 2 Parker’s Tweedsmuir Feebee Mine ShCM another one at the top end of the scales. Different type to winner and not in such good coat, both colourwise and texture. Good bite and strong teeth. Clean neck flowing into good shoulders. Rib cage with plenty of heart room. Level topline. Moved OK.

VB (2)

Two very good bitches who belied their ages. A credit to their owners and to the breed.

1 Best Veteran Grainger’s Perrylands Bentara. Somethings get better with age and this 8 1⁄2 year old bitch was the best mover on the day, just floated effortlessly, powering her way around the ring. She is the ideal bitch size. She reminded me of a female version of her paternal great grandsire Ch Talyot Dionysis JW who won his 10th ticket at the age of almost 11 years at the breed championship show in an entry of approximately 100. He won his final ticket at the age of nearly 11 1/2 years. I hope she follows his longevity. I was sorely tempted! Lovely feminine head, correct ear placement and expression. Strong underjaw with good sized teeth, correct scissor bite. Crested neck going into excellent forehand, good length of rib with heartroom. Short loin and correct rear angulation.

2 Heath’s Perrylands Hello Again. this 7year old cream bitch was thoroughly enjoying her day and went around the ring like a youngster. Long, low & level. Feminine head and expression. Good ear placement and correct bite. Nice length of rib with plenty of heartroom. Good rear angulation.
