SKYE LEEDS 17 Judge: Mr Bob Cross BEST OF BREED : 4921 THOMSON Mrs J Glorfindel Shadow Boxer Sh.CM SKYE JUDGE LEEDS 17 This was a very nostalgic show for me as I awarded my first set of CCs here in Skye Terriers in 1982, some 35 years ago. On that occasion too, I awarded the CCs to litter brother and sister, Lorraine Hall's Ch Perlor Sgiannach and Perlor Sound Of Raasay. Sadly though, I was also taken back through my time as Chairman of the Skye Terrier Club, as Skye friends and exhibitors present observed a minute's silence to remember that true Yorkshire lady, Mrs Mary Watts, who was the Club Secretary during a large part of that time and who had sadly passed away during the week before the show. The Club President, Mr Allan Stephenson, made a very fitting contribution to her passing. My thanks must go to the Committee for such a friendly welcome and excellent hospitality. Though the entry was average for the breed nowadays - I can remember when we had three times as many gracing the rings at Championship Shows - I was nevertheless impressed with the overall quality of the CC and Reserve CC winners and there were also some very promising young stock on display which augers well for the future of our endangered breed. We need greater numbers in the show ring to save our breed and regardless of what you start off with, you can always eradicate faults with careful breeding and by asking for and taking advice from older breeders. 1 Wallace's Tweedsmuir Flyin High. Lovely black baby of just 8 months with a correct balance of length to height and a good strong topline. He has a nice dark eye and a good bite within a well balanced head for his body size and when alerted his ears are so attentive. Just a little unsettled at times but when he put his mind to it was true both coming and going and covered the ground easily in profile. Excellent coat texture. A really nice puppy who should have a very bright future when he gets a bit of practice. Very well presented by his novice handler. 1 Huckle's Silvaspangles Midas Touch. A very well balanced 15 month cream with a really good headpiece and well set ears. His coat is just at the right stage for his age with the colour clearing correctly and he was put down in a very well groomed condition. A very good ribcage with nice short loin giving him an excellent top-line. Moving true both coming and going and handled very sympathetically by his young handler to get the best out of him. Another newcomer to the Skye ring who has a very nice youngster with a bright future ahead of him. 1 Herbert's Tweedsmuir Stargazer. Another quality exhibit just coming up 2 years with the three L's and lovely grey quality jacket. Spot-on head proportions with lovely ear set and a correct scissor bite. Lovely flowing neck running into a really good set of shoulders with well boned legs and feet. Excellent length of rib and neat short loin ensures a level topline all the time. Good muscling in his well turned stifle ensured a steady flowing movement in profile and both coming and going away, though just a shade fond of his tail on the move at times. An extremely elegant young Skye male with I am sure a very bright future. In very close consideration for the Reserve CC but maturity won out on the day. 2 Woodhead's Knowlespring Drummer Boy. Another promising cream youngster, coming up 16 months, with a very good quality true cream coat and beautifully balanced outline. Good head proportions with lovely ear set and a correct scissor bite. Strong neck flows into a really good set of shoulders with well boned legs and feet. Really good length of rib and a neat short loin made for a level topline all the time. He was not on his best behaviour today and this affected his movement in profile and both coming and going away which made the decision a little easier. However, I am sure a very bright future as he matures as everything is in the right place. 1 Thomson's Glorfindel Shadow Boxer ShCM. Top quality dog of 3 years with such a beautiful headpiece of correct proportions, beautifully set well fringed ears, well set dark eyes giving a lovely expression and a perfect scissor bite. Such an elegant, sweeping neck and run-in to correctly laid front assembly with excellent bone and neat feet. He has such a long, strong and well shaped ribcage with a neat, short loin covered in a beautifully textured, dark grey flowing coat. He has such lovely angulation in very well muscled set of hindquarters, allowing him to cover the ground with precision and great purpose which is such a delight to watch. I was delighted to award him his second CC, which, considering his many qualities, I would think that his title is not far away. He pulled out all the stops today and could not be denied the top accolade of Best of Breed. One of the best Skye Terriers I have had the pleasure of judging at CC level over the last 35 years. 2 McLeod's Juger Eidelweiss My Myself And I At Esgia. What an impressive looking drop this young man is. Well balanced skull and foreface, nice dark eye and that lovely expression drops very often have. Good strong neck and a nice front assembly, if a shade wide, Not the overall balance of winner. Good strong rib and loin covered in a shaded cream coat. Well set and carried tail and he moved soundly both coming and going and in profile. 3 Bailey's Talyot Nimrod At Marjayn. 1 Curtis' Ch Brakemill Barnum ShCM. This cream male, is quality and should always be in contention for top honours. Excellent balanced skull and foreface, beautifully fringed ears, lovely dark eye and another perfect scissor bite completes the picture. He has a lovely run-in to a very well laid set of shoulders. His topline was just a shade variable today but is covered with a beautifully textured cream coat which accentuated his positive flowing movement. He has firm muscletone and correct set tail completing the vision of a top quality exhibit. He did have very strong competition in the challenge today from both the winner of the CC and also the winners of Post Graduate and Veteran, making this decision the most difficult of the day. Reserve CC. 2 Parker's Glorfindel Deacon Brodie ShCM. Dark Grey male of 6 years with nicely balanced head with well furnished ears and good scissor bite. He has a good strong neck and run-in to a slightly upright shoulder, but with good bone in the front legs. He has a profuse coat of good quality. Firm muscletone in well turned quarters, just a little too fond of his tail on the move and was not co-operating at all well with his handler which was a shame. 1 Harrison's Uk & Ir Ch Knowlespring Jale House Rock For Trenson. This 10 year old seems to get better the older he gets and is a real credit to his owner. He has excellent balance of length to height. Nicely balance of skull and foreface with well fringed ears, just a shade wider set and good bite. Good length of neck and lovely run-in to a well laid shoulder followed up by a very good rib to loin balance and all covered in a well textured cream jacket. Rather high tail set which spoiled the outline in profile but moving very true both coming and going, a lovely veteran who indeed gave the younger boys a run for their money for the Reserve CC. 1 Parker's Tweedsmuir Feebee Mine. Sweet headed 8 month baby litter mate to the dog puppy but at this stage a bit more mature. Although standing a little squarer at the moment, the rib to loin balance is right so this should be remedied when she does the stretch. She has very well fringed ears for her age and a nice dark eye and a good bite. Good reachy neck running into a nicely developing front which is spot on at the moment. Good rib to loin balance and well muscled for her age. She was very steady on the move and so sympathetically handled and this gave her the Best Puppy decision over her brother. 2 Evans' Kometa Rossi Bozena At Marodyme. Another sweet headed bitch puppy not as mature as first but with a lovely headpiece, nice dark eye and correct bite. Lovely flowing neck runs into a neat shoulder placement with good bone and neat feet. Good rib to loin balance and nice muscling in her young quarters. Moved steadily both coming and going but was rather fond of her tail at times and this showed up in profile. Well put down and well handled. 1 Roberts' Glorfindel Effort At Sunabil. Another well balanced young bitch with a good quality cream jacket. She has a very nice head and expression with good dark eye and correct bite, ear set a shade wide. Good quality coat at just about the right length for her age. Not quite so positive in top-line at times standing but did level out on the move. In profile she was free flowing and positive but was just a shade close going away. Well put down and very well handled. 1 Woodhead's Knowlespring Candy Cane. What a lovely outline and lowness to ground this just out of junior cream bitch has. Wearing a beautiful top quality, correctly textured, cream coat, no mussy colours here, She has a well-balanced skull and foreface with correctly set and lightly fringed ears and a nice dark eye and correct scissor bite. She has a lovely neck that flows nicely into an excellent front assembly. Her excellent length of ribcage means her topline is level all the time and she covers the ground with such ease and precision. Considered her seriously in the challenge for the CC but finally awarded her Reserve CC and I am sure her day of top honours will come very soon. 2 Downes' Tweedsmuir Star Wonder Among Tzuki. Very attractive grey youngster just coming up 2 years. Not quite the balance of length to height of the winner but with a well proportioned skull and foreface, nice dark eye and good scissor bite. Flowing neck and good shoulder placement with excellent ribcage and neat loin giving a good level topline, all covered with a quality grey coat with lovely shadings to it. Beautifully presented and handled both standing and on the move. In profile and coming and going she covered the ground with ease. Oh, for her to be that shade longer! 3 Bryden's Esgia's Sula Froya. Nicely outlined grey youngster that, unfortunately was not sound on the day, which might have changed the placings. 1 Burscough's Glorfindel Shadow Wings At Kilfinan. My Best Puppy from the last time I judged and fulfilling all of her promise. Sweetest of heads with a lovely dark eye, correct scissor bite and with very attentive well fringed ears to finish the picture. Lovely neck and run in to an excellent front assembly, she has a very well proportioned rib to loin balance giving that classical outline of a young Skye bitch. Good muscling for her age in a nicely angulated set of quarters allowing such precise and consistent movement, flowing in profile and so true fore and aft. Beautifully put down and so sympathetically handled. Was pleased to award her the CC this time round, her first and I am sure the next 2 will not be far behind. 2 Zvezdina's Juger Eidelweiss Mary Poppins (Imp). Larger bitch than 1 and not one I would usually go for, as she is not long enough or low enough to ground to fit the standard. A very pleasing headpiece with a good eye and she has an adequate neck running into a good shoulder placement with well boned legs below. Fairly good depth of ribcage and is fairly well muscled in her quarters. She is an extremely glamorous and confident showgirl shown in full coat and this won her second place in this class. Coat colour over the shoulders needs to clear at her age. Put down very well groomed and was extremely well handled. 3 McLeod's Noap Chariot Madlen Mardzheri At Esgia.
