Skye Terriers

Skyes are a delightful breed & I really enjoyed my day judging the lovely entry. Overall there were no major faults which would raise any concerns regarding health or the ability to carry out the work they were originally bred for. Most were in good condition, all were beautifully presented & temperaments were, without exception, super.

There were some difficult decisions & one or two did nothing to help their handlers. The ring was a reasonable size for the entry but the grass was long, the ground lumpy & the two previous days had obviously left some very interesting & irresistible aroma’s for some!

PG (2,1a)

1 Lynch’s Kenmilltri Fraxinus, this 6 years black castrated dog is a lovely example of the breed, strength throughout, in great coat & condition, outline is excellent when he gets his act together, so good to go over. Might just prefer a slightly longer neck but everything fits & he can move when he wants. In the challenge he looked bored & uncooperative.

LD (2,1)

1 Parker’s Glorfindel Basil Brush, pale silver dog with a superb head & expression, very attractive, masculine example of the breed with a good reach of neck & level topline, strong & well fitting front with well pronounced sternum & correct shaped ribs extending well back, muscular well angled hindquarters, in fabulous coat. Can be a little proud of his tail but a delightful character who should gain his title. Should have been in contention for BD, unfortunately not cooperating with his handler, preferring to hoover the ground!

OD (4,1)

1 Curtis’ Gumshoe Bugsy Malone of Brakemill, 5 years, fully mature dark silver dog, liked the masculine strength of this dog, could see him doing a day’s work, super head & typical Skye expression, well veiled ears which could be positioned a tad higher. Good length of neck, great front with correct shaped ribs & strong loin, tail carried low giving an overall well balanced outline, moves well with power from behind, in top condition, carrying a lovely well presented harsh coat. BOB, thought he represented the breed admirably in the group;

2 Breeze’s Salena Black Shadow, black, showing well. Not the maturity or strength throughout of 1 but a very good example of the breed having a level topline & moving very well. The Standard asks for a long neck but for me he was stretched a little too much making him look little unbalanced. In super coat & condition. Preferred the overall balance of 1. RBD.

PB (2)

Litter sisters, very similar & offspring of BB.

1 Turnbull’s Papplewick Strathisla, silver, 9 months, very raw as expected for this breed at this age. Thought she was delightful, so good to go over, long, low & level with a tight fitting well angulated front, solid level topline, good length of rib, sound hindquarters with well held tail. Gave her handler a bit of a hard time on the move but could see the promise of sound action. So difficult for the puppies to move out well on this ground today, would like to see her on flat ground. Won this class over her litter sister on her tighter front, harder condition & slightly better cooperation! BP;

2 Olding & Munroe’s Papplewick Glenrossie, same attributes apply as 1. Slightly more coat & looked a little bigger than litter sister but not cooperating too well. Breeders should be proud of these two, very good examples of the breed at this age.

YB (1)

1 McLeod’s Esgia’s Sula The Late Edition, black with a lot of maturing to do. A good example of a classic outline. To nitpick would prefer a slightly stronger jaw & a little more layback of shoulder. That said this bitch is so eyecatching she should not be overlooked, low to ground, very typy, moves well.

PGB (3,1)

1 Woodhead’s Knowlespring Hot Property, silver who appealed for her overall balance standing & moving, long, low & level with well held tail, good head with correct length of neck into tight fitting front assembly. Would prefer a longer rib but this did not affect her topline here. Well angulated hindquarters enabled her to move positively & freely over the difficult terrain, her overall balance & super movement won her RBB;

2 Proud’s Dolphaz Debutante, black, as expected, not the maturity of 1. Good outline in profile & typical Skye head & expression, put up a reasonable performance on the move. No outstanding faults just could not match 1.

LB (4,2)

1 Olding & Munroe’s lady Orlith of Papplewick, silver, loved everything about this very feminine, well put together bitch, nothing to dislike, she displays all the desired characteristics of a typical Skye that is fit for function, long, low & level with the right amount of substance for a bitch, her movement was a joy to watch, she had no problem negotiating the difficult ground & this gave her the award of BB. Only lost out for BOB on presentation & finish, should easily gain her title;

2 White’s Knowlespring You’re Nicked by Gumshoe, cream bitch with lovely head, front & length of rib, excellent length, good tail carriage. Just let down by her rear construction. Runs up slightly behind so could not match the movement or outline of 1.

OB (4,2)

1 Curtis’ Ch Tsuki Solastar of Brakemill, cream, very classy looking young lady, in beautiful coat & condition, lovely feminine head & expression with well fringed ears of good colour, well constructed & in good condition. Would prefer slightly more length to complete the picture. Well held tail on the move but a little unco-ordinated in rear movement;

2 Proud’s Knowlespring Guess Who of Dolphaz, 7 years cream, in glorious coat, bigger all through than 1. good head & super front assembly. Ribs hard to find as she obviously enjoys the privileges of fine dining! Well constructed hindquarters & good tail carriage but her weight let her down on the move causing her to lose her topline.
