SKYE JUDGE CRUFTS 14

Skye Terriers

I thank the Kennel Club & Crufts committee for giving me the opportunity to judge Skyes at Crufts. I had a lovely day judging my/our lovely breed. I had an entry of 50 dogs making 52 entries it was nice to have so many dogs of quality to make decisions over, I must thank all the exhibitors from this shore but certainly thank all the foreign exhibitors who made the long journey over to Crufts, hope you had safe journey’s home. Nearly all dogs shown were in good muscletone, well coated & presented. The temperament of every one shown under me was 100 per cent so they are really the ‘heavenly breed’.

We must watch our length, the low, level & long is very important within the Standard, we have a few who are well developed & constructed but are shorter in back due to having a short ribcage followed by a long loin with some lending to a slackness in topline. Forelegs were much improved with lovely short strong bone & big feet; although several were very tied at front hardly allowing fingers let alone a hand through to feel depth of chest

VD (3)

1 Barraclough’s Ch Skyeotts Midnight Majesty at Wemoway, this 10 year old still makes a stunning picture as he stands is of true breed type he retains a fabulous quality coat with good texture & undercoat. Masculine strength of head, with good strong skull & long foreface of strength with good jaw & dentition. Drop ears well hung to side of head with lovely feathering, eyes dark & well veiled. Strong neck well arched into laid back shoulders, topline on the stance a little soft but on moving collected himself together. Nice body shape with depth & substance, well ribbed back with short loin. Straight short well boned legs & round biggish feet, rearquarters powerful with short hocks & neat feet. Well held tail on the move which was sound with real powering drive from the hindquarters;

2 Macqueen’s Lynaire Mr Darcy of Azrakhan, impressive headed male with strong skull & jaw, black well fringed ears, set on & used, dark expressive eyes still clear now in his 9th years. Strong neck laid back into shoulders not as long in back line as 1 but still firm. Strong quarters & nicely set & carried tail. Well ribbed not as far back as 1 with short loin. Well presented straight dark grey coat of good texture & undercoat, lovely head veiling. Strong boned legs little close together covered the ground well but not the reaching drive of 1;

3 Hawkes & Masons’ Maridale Blueys Beach, old fashioned true Skye type. Super veiled head of good strength, strong skull, would like more stop to foreface, strong jaw. Dark alert expressive eyes, has a good earset but fails to show off his well fringed ears. Excellent neck although has lost some weight since I last judged him still carrying more weight than necessary so spoiling his outline & topline. Good length of back just not the length of 1 & 2 but well ribbed back with short loin. Presented well in lovely condition & textured straight dark grey coat. Strong boned slightly close at forelegs, good large feet & nice return of stifle, today moved out well & was sound both ends.

PD (2)

1 Kings’ Fun And Games at Celticbridge, 10 months, one of the best I have seen from this kennel. Lovely masculine head, well shaped skull & foreface, enough veiling over dark cheeky eyes, erect ears set on & used well. Strong long crested neck into well laid back shoulders, firm backline of good length, just inclined to roach a little but this will straighten & lengthen with his development, tail well set on & feathered carried below his topline. Ribs well moulded & carried back into short loin, lovely body of depth with substance, good front & rear angles with muscletone. Very smart straight well presented cream coat with black ear fringes. Nice straight well boned legs with good biggish well rounded feet. Correct return of stifle & short hocks, powerful sound stride could be seen as owner handler was trying hard to walk faster to show his true potential. Very sound with good driving action, should have a bright future. BP;

2 Woodhead’s Skyeomania’s Mozart mit Knowlespring, well up to size, at 10 month this beautifully coated cream male with strong head well developed with good stop to foreface, lovely dark fringes coming onto ears little too high set at present, expressive dark well shaped eyes just being veiled. Not the length of neck, the set into shoulders, or the length of ribs of 1, longer in loin & shorter backed. Well bodied with good substance & in lovely condition, I have one if which I hope will correct itself. Nice forelegs with good bone & nicely padded big forefeet. Correct return of stifle & hocks fraction long. Moved out needed more stride not as positive as 1 tail carried high.

JD (1)

1 Conway’s Talyot Niall at Suzitzu, once he settled down to the job in question showed himself off, on the top end of the Standard but still long & level although owner handler needs to watch topline on the stance. Masculine well developed head, strong muzzle & jaw line. Nice dark alert eyes under veiling well developed ears with black fringes. Shorter, strong arched neck into shoulders & then into backline of length. Nice tail set carried well although does put it above his backline once settled. Well bodied with depth, would like ribs further back loin little long. Good depth & width to chest, nice short well boned legs & biggish round feet well presented. Would like little more fore & hindquarter angulations, nice hocks & feet. Super presentation to his hard flat dark grey coat with good under jacket. Moved out soundly but would have liked more drive from his quarters.

PGD (3)

1 Marshall’s Emoticon Kiaora Glorfindel, well presented & conditioned cream with harsh straight top coat & correct under coat. Head carried nicely on crested neck of length, masculine head the best in the class, good stop, balance & strengths, ears of good size & shape with dark feathering, dark expressive eyes well set. Slightly taller but longer than 2 with firm level back to correct set of tail carried well. Well bodied with good weight & substance & in good tone, ribs carried well back with short loin, excellent depth & width to forechest & short straight forelegs well boned with nice elbows, good strong large feet. Good rear angles of strength neat feet. Very positive stride & sound;

2 Bergstroms’ Gold Monarh Sigurd, presented a nice picture with a good length to his dark grey jacket. Lovely head carriage & shape but not the strength or masculinity of 1, lovely alert dark eyes & good veiling, nice ears well set on with fringes. Lovely width & depth of chest, nice straight well boned short legs & large fore feet. Firm long, low level back over a body with substance, with ribs further back than 3 but being longer in loin than 1. Correct rearquarters well muscled, moved out very soundly with enough stride & drive carrying tail nicely;

3 Rygges’ Latroonis Claudius, an impressive fawn with a masculine head well worked with powerful jaw, nice dark eyes & well set & shaped ears with nice feathering. Good veiling to head matched his super coat with lovely harsh texture in good condition with under jacket. Not the length of back line & shorter in rib with much longer loin than my 2 above. Excellent depth to front, well boned legs & large feet, correct hind angles & well muscled. Moved out well covering the ground outline spoilt by high set on & carried tail.

LD (4)

1 Parker’s Glorfindel Deacon Brodie, as a youngster when I judged him he did not impress me but this 2½ year old today really caught my attention & was very nice to go over with most everything being in the right place. Well presented in harsh textured dark grey jacket with good undercoat. Strong well worked head with good stop, muzzle & jaw, nice dark expressive eyes under good veiling ears well fringed could be better set on & held. Head carried well on just enough length to crested neck, good shoulder width on into a firm level back of good length, over a body well ribbed back with short loin. Best of fronts with excellent angulations & short well boned legs large fore feet. Correct well muscled rearquarters & short hocks & neat feet. Moved out with reach & drive with excellent stride & sound outline spoilt by high flying tail. Very well handled to get the best out of him. Considered in line-up;

2 Hawkes’ Glorfindel Cereal Crunch at Maridale, litter brother to 1 with a good long, low, level outline although having the length of back his ribcage is shorter therefore being much longer in loin. Much preferred these boys more powerful masculine head with enough stop, strong muzzle, jaw, lovely alert dark eyes, black nose, well positioned & held darkly feathered ears. Head held well but on shorter neck, not the layback of shoulder or the front angles of 1. Good return of stifle, well muscled, well boned legs & large front feet & neat rear feet from well angled stifle & short hocks. Presented well in straight harsh textured dark grey coat with under jacket. Moved out well with nice stride closer behind than 1 tail carried too high;

3 Smith’s Lam-Baias Mad Max at Marrcrieff, very impressed by the look & length of the beautifully presented & well coated cream male with lovely dark feathering to his well carried ears, but although he has the length his backline dips badly on the stance due to his short ribcage & long loin gives way to lack of back strength, also feel this dog could carry a few pounds more in weight to his advantage. Super masculine head to go over, nice stop, alert dark eyes, black nose & strong muzzle & jaw & well furnished veil. Good length of neck & well laid shoulders, tied front legs well boned, large feet, good return of stifle. Moved out well with enough stride but close both ends & could not hold topline on the move, well carried tail, smartly handled.

OD (9,3)

All 6 dogs represented the breed type well.

1 Breeze’s Ch Salena The Special One, certainly well named, very true to the Standard, nothing cardboard cut out about this masculine male now 4½ years old. I preferred the head on this dog it is well worked with strong backskull, nice stop, strong tapering foreface to a powerful muzzle & jaw, nice alert dark eyes well set & correct rounded ear with lovely black fringes. Muscular long crested neck into well laid back broad shoulders into a firm long backline to moulded croup & well set & carried tail. Super depth to body & chest, well angulated shoulder & upper arm into nice straight well boned short muscular legs & large round feet, long ribbing well back to a short loin & muscular hindquarters, short strong hocks & neat feet. So well schooled & handled this dark grey well conditioned, presented in fabulous harsh textured coat with good under coat. Pleasing to watch on the move good free flow with powerful stride & sound both ends showing clean heals. CC & BOB, really showed how he could move in the group;

2 Stewarts’ Multi Ch Finnsky Momentous, I first judged this 4½ year old male in Finland when a puppy & he had a super day being best youngster in show, then he met my winner about 3 years ago & I awarded him the RCC & today I again had to repeat the award. Another occasion in Ireland when he was a little older he was my BOB. I did not recognise him today but he has developed into a superior masculine male slightly taller & shorter backed than my winner but with such presence. Not quite the strength of skull or the foreface of 1 but with lovely veiling over dark alert eyes. Well set & used rounded ears with lovely black ear fringes. Strong neck, lovely firm backline of good length through to nice tail set & carriage, well ribbed back body with short loin. Correct upper arm & shoulder development, good width & depth of chest, good body depth with substance & in good tone, beautifully presented harsh straight shaded cream coat with correct softer under coat. Was handled very well & moved soundly with powerful stride just slightly shorter in step than 1. RCC;

3 Curtis’ Brakemill Barnum, presented a super outline on the stance with his beautifully presented clear cream straight coat & black points. Lovely correct harsh texture, good length & undercoat. Masculine well constructed powerful head, good skull to stop with tapering foreface & strong jaw. Lovely veiled black eyes well set & good placed ears with lovely black fringes & black nose. Slightly shorter in neck than 1 & 2 & not the angles to shoulder & upper arm, well boned straight short legs & large padded feet. Lovely firm topline but slightly shorter in back than 2 strong broad back to moulded croup & well set on & carried tail. A conditioned & toned body with good substance shorter in ribs & with longer length into his loin. Powerful hindquarters well muscled with return of stifle & short hocks & neat rear feet. Well handled & presented, moved out with showmanship, good stride with enough ground coverage, sound fore & aft.

GCD (1)

1 White’s Talyot Menelaus at Gumshoe, just recently placed this dog in a strong terrier group & made some personal comments, today they were heeded & although on his own was well handled & looked the part. Nothing overdone, a good breed type of long, low & level, masculine black well coated 3½ year old, correct strength of head well developed, lovely expressive dark eyes well veiled, well moulded round ears with good black fringes. Long crested neck set well into shoulders with correctly angled upper arm with depth to chest, straight short well boned legs & large feet. Topline firm & held well on the move over a body well ribbed back with short loin, enough body substance & in good tone. Enough return of stifle, well muscled, short hocks & neat feet. Very positive sound mover showing his heels.

What a super memory lane.

1 Macqueen’s Ch Azrakhan Capercaillie, headed a fantastic class of golden oldies, all in lovely hard condition & super presentation. It was hard to make a decision & only small points separated the class. Super outline to this 7½ year old black, presented in full coat, lovely condition with harsh straight top & woolly under coat. Great headpiece nice strong skull, stop to strong muzzle, nice dentition, alert dark eye, & well fringed ears. Head held well on crested neck of length into well laid broad shoulders with good length of back & well positioned tail. Well ribbed body with depth & substance, short loin & well muscled quarters, nice return of stifle & correct hocks. Legs & feet well boned & strong really powered the ring & was sound with drive. In strong contention for RCC;

2 Mikkola & Utters’ Int/Fi/Tr/Nord Ch Finnsky Evergreen, superb 10½ years old female still very much in her prime & still ‘evergreen’. Well handled & presented in beautiful full coat of straight harsh black. Feminine well worked head, lovely dark expressive eyes well veiled, good ear positioning & well fringed. Nice stop & strong muzzle still with correct bite. Great neck well crested well back into broad shoulders & firm backline & moulded croup with correct tail set on. Very good front angulations, boned legs & large feet. Strong body well built with ribs well back & short loin. Strong quarters & well muscled stifle. Really powerful side stride & sound both ends, her movement excelled after such a long journey;

3 Shuttleworth’s Perrylands Stroller, nice size this 8½ year old grey, very nice type to go over, well bodied & in very good tone & condition. I like the overall outline of this lady but she loses it for me when I judge her head, strong enough backskull with enough stop & length of foreface but lacks strength of muzzle & has no underjaw. Kind dark eyes well veiled, good ear carriage, would like more neck & better shoulder placement but has correct angles to upper arm, good depth & width of chest, well boned legs & large feet. Super body & well ribbed back shortish loin under a firm well held & carried backline of good length. Strong rearend, good hocks & neat feet. Lovely straight well presented grey coat with enough length & good feel. Very positive on the move.

1 Richardson’s Talyots Nalani, one of three sisters in the class, now 15 months old. Has always been the one to take my attention being the smaller longer one, presented well in attractive cream coat, good texture with length coming, would like a little more strength to her well developed head, very pretty & feminine but not the foreface strength of 2, dark expressive well set eyes with veiling, ears not as well positioned or furnished as 2. Crested neck of good length into layback of shoulders, good back length holding well on the stance & moved well carried tail. Well ribbed back would like more substance to the body & width of back. Good forechest & front angles, correct bone & large forefeet, well moulded croup & well conditioned quarters & neat hocks & feet. Preferred her movement to sister’s more positive side stride & power from the quarters & sound;

2 Richardson’s Talyot Nynniaw, I really liked this bitch’s head development with strength, good backskull, correct foreface & good stop. Expressive dark eyes nicely veiled, well set & used ears with fringes, head held well on crested neck, would like more length & better lay of shoulder, longer in back than 1, back not a firm as shorter in ribs with longer loin, would like more body substance. Needing more length to a coat changing colour to cream, not quite the texture quality of 1. Enough bone to fore leg & feet. Enough return of stifle with neat hocks & feet. Not as positive in rear movement as 1 but uses her front well & is sound inclined to loose back line slightly on the move;

3 Richardson’s Talyot Nyree, although I put this sister 3rd she has improved immensely since first seeing her & even feel she might take over the other 2 in a year or twos time when fully matured & developed. Presented in a good textured black jacket just needing more length that will come with age. Her pretty feminine head has strength & shape, developing nicely with lovely veiling correctly shaped alert dark eyes & well set & used ears. Needs more length of neck but well placed shoulders into a back of length with enough ribs well back, I would like more body weight, good angles to upper arm & enough chest development, holds a firm topline on the move although it was not easy to assess her movement to the full today although a little close is sound & has drive.

PGB (3)

1 White’s Gumshoe Silent Witness, very nice breed type to this dark grey youngster who I see is by my GC dog winner. Very pretty head would like a little more of it, with enough strength of skull, tapering foreface with enough stop & good jaw. Long length to crested neck set into well laid back shoulders & firm long low & level backline, ribs well back into a short loin well moulded rump & set on of tail. Correct angles to forequarters with straighter well boned legs & feet, body of depth & good frame well ribbed back with short loin. Strong quarters & return of stifle, moved out with drive & good stride once settled. Needs firmer handling;

2 King’s Celticbridge Dancing Comet, very attractive light grey with lovely texture to her coat just needing that extra length to complete the picture, feel she could be out of coat. Slightly taller, not as long as 1. With the most glamorous head of strength, good backskull, stop & powerful foreface, well veiled eyes, nice ear set fringes coming. Good length of neck & well placed shoulders holding a broad firm backline over a body of length with ribs well back into a short loin, nice set on tail carried just on line. Excellent depth of chest & front angulations would like a slightly less tied front, legs well boned large feet. Powerful hindquarters & hocks & neat feet. Once settled & stopped giving her handler a hard time was sound both ends with good side stride;

3 Hartfield’s Gumshoe Shot In The Dark at Moshanta, a very nice outline but did not have the strength of head or the length of neck of my 2 above. Smaller well shaped head, nice stop with enough jaw, alert dark eyes nicely veiled, correct earset with nice dark fringes, shorter neck, not the shoulder or upper arm angles, good depth of chest & well bodied with ribs going well back into a short loin. Well conditioned & presented coat with good texture lacking in length of my winners. Well boned legs tied at front big fore feet, good return of stifle would like more strength. Very well handled & shown, moved out with good action covering the ground.

LB (2)

1 Barrass’ Lavaux Spirit Of The Isle of Gallondean, only the two in this class yet it gave me a slight headache in decision making. I have always liked this bitch & her breed type, today she looked too strong & tall but on going over her she has the most typical head, lovely strength of back skull correct stop & powerful tapering foreface & strong jaw, well veiled dark expressive eyes & super ears well fringed. Strong long neck & good length to her backline which on times today was inclined to roach on the stance. So well put together body with depth, super ribs & short loin. Lovely coat in super condition & presentation, dark grey of good texture with undercoat. Good depth of chest & well boned legs & feet, well muscled hindquarters & neat feet. On the move did not put much into her stride & played her handler up, once settled showed some stride out & that she was sound but would like more drive;

2 Bergstroms’ Skywalker’s Made In Italy, I loved the outline & shape of the bitch as she entered the ring & thought she would be my class winner but on going over her there was not the required strength or power in her make up. Very pretty head but lacking in strength of skull & jaw, short in foreface. Clear cream veiling to head & dark alert eyes well placed & darkly fringed ears. Lovely length of neck well back into her shoulders through to a good length of back over a body needing more substance with enough ribbing back. Just enough bone to tied fore legs & correct feet, excellent return of stifle & neat rear feet. Most stunning straight clear cream harsh coat so well presented & in lovely condition. Well handled & presented, moved with very positive side stride & good rear drive, sound both ends.

OB (11,1)

1 Woodhead’s Ch Knowlespring Mistletoe, just over 3 years this stunning rich cream bitch caught my attention, lovely stance & outline of long, low & level with very powerful side stride. Very attractive strongly made head, correct skull, stop & foreface with powerful jaw. Well positioned & shaped eyes & alert expression. Lovely ear set & carriage well fringed. Strength & length to neck well laid back into clean shoulders, firm broad long backline to a tail well set on & well furnished & carried. Super chest & body depth with ribs well back & short loin. Strong rump well muscled hindquarters & neat hocks & feet. Excellent forequarters well boned with large round feet. Beautiful rich cream harsh straight coat with good feel & under jacket, to be critical would like a little more work on her presentation & stacking. Powerful side stride holding her topline, great front action & powerful rear drive & sound. CC;

2 Bergstroms’ Skyewalker’s My Italian Dream, this 2½ year old has a very beautiful outline with lovely overall size & shape, I could not believe on reading the catalogue that she is the litter to the second in my limit although similar in outline the difference in strength & body is so markedly different. Very pretty head with strength of skull, nice stop, powerful tapered foreface & power in her jaw, well fringed ears well set on & carried, dark eyes. Lovely crested neck well laid back into broad shoulders & firm well carried long back, nice croup & tail set on. Deep body ribbed back, could have carried more weight not having the substance of 1. Superior straight well presented rich cream coat. Well angulated front with chest depth & elbows well in on well boned legs, smallish front feet. Good return & well muscled stifles, powerful stride & very sound both ends once she settled into her stride pattern. RCC;

3 Barraclough’s Ch/Sw Ch Skyeotts Amnesix High Sky Miracle at Wemoway, an old favourite in wonderful presentation & so well handled to get the best from this lovely lady. Now all but 8 years old & looking well & so beautifully presented in full black coat with great texture gleaming with condition. Super head structure dropped ears well set on, lovely eye colour & expression, well carried head on long neck correct length of back line just inclined to dip occasionally. Well ribbed back with good loin, well bodied & muscled with correct angles front & rear, lovely boned legs & big feet, very sound positive mover.

GCB (1)

1 Shuttleworth’s Whicheeta Celtic Cruisader, nearly 5 years old dark grey with coat of good texture but lacking the length due to being out of at the wrong time. Lovely constructed feminine head of strength with correct ear placement & nice eye shape & colour. Of nice size with firm backline of reasonable length with good body substance & ribs well back with short loin. Forelegs a little tied but with good bone, correct rear angles, well muscled throughout, moved well.
