SKYE BORDER UNION 18 Judge(s): MR H GAY (MALSVILLE) I was told it was the best entry of the year, except for Crufts, thank you. Overwhelming impression of the day; puppies. In a breed that has seen a worrying lack of them anywhere, never mind in the showring, it was good to see puppies in both sexes. Like babies in any breed they need time to deliver their potential but certainly they have promise, none were shamed in any way. Skyes are an achondraplasic breed but the breed standard makes no allowance for this which always leads to a head scratch. Fronts were generally sound with far better placed elbows but this means that the “front feet pointing truly forward” is very difficult to find as it just can’t really happen on the construction of the breed so I was happy with five to one foot position to go with tucked elbows. The breed still needs attention to some aspects. Musculature was still lacking behind in many which has an impact on movement. It does mean that the classic “plank walk” of the Skye appears in more dogs, and that always looks good, but it would be nice if there was more exemplary, rather than adequate, reach & drive. Ribs were a noticeably better shape than last time I judged but there were a few that were still short so the length of the breed was achieved by a longer loin. A surprise was the discovery of a just a couple of misaligned incisors-a first time for me in the breed. 1) Pringle’s Esgia the Exciseman Cream of good length and outline. Coat as one might expect coming Head of good shape ,nice eye . ears well placed. Moved well but obviously loose in front. Best Puppy. 1) The late Mrs Marshall’s Flanagan Show Stopper Glorfindel (ImpSVN) Cream dog with a changing coat. Strong head and jaw with strong teeth Good ear . Good shape and length of rib Moved with clean movement behind. Stood well with good outline. Really nice young dog to still be in Novice 1)Kendrick’s Frisco Kiaora At Jeraro (Imp Cze) Head of good shape, correct eye and stop Ears erect good shape of rib and short in loin. Sound front and moved with a good push behind. Topline level when settled, needs to body up. 1)Breeze’s Ch Saleena The Magnificient One. Well presented dog with good length of neck. Good shape size and outline. Good rib.Well muscled behind. Moved with reach and drive. Needed to have more oomph but delivered enough for BOB 1) Burscough’s Glorfindel Secret Shadow Good head with strong teeth, good ear fringes on an erect ear. Excellent length of neck good outline moved well behind with reach in front Good rib shape loin not too long. Best Veteran 1) Large’s Parrima-Arih Universe of My Fantasy NAF TAF (Imp) Cream of good size and shape Good rib with good length Sound front Head ear and eye good fringes coat coming Loose on the move. 3) McKenzie and Scott’s Esgia Glen Scotia of Borcho. Another baby who moved with promise when she settled. Nice length and outline, head currently a little fine. 1)McKenzie and Scott’s Bearreraig Rubha Sughar at Borcho Finer bitch Moved well with clean pads behind and good reach. Good length of neck, rib could be better 1)Shaw’s Tweedsmuir Fancy Free at StoneCellars Correct skull Erect ear and good eye. Nice neck rib a little flat sided. Very skittish did not settle on the move. 1) Parker’s Tweedsmuir Feebe Mine Cream Bitch of good proportions Femine head of good shape and stop ears adequately fringed Stood well when settled. Moved parallel behind 1) Barass’s Gallodean Foreign Spirit SHCM This cream bitch was a problem. On the move she has beautiful shape, outline and flows but stands short in neck and rather strange in topline. My hands told me her moving impression was the correct one, hence her first place and Res CC. 1) Burscough’s Ch Glorfindel Shadow Wings at Kilfinan SHCM Good head erect ear and good eye. Nice neck, Excellent rib of correct length and not too long in loin Moved well with good muscle behind. CC. HAROLD GAY (Judge) |
