SKYE JUDGE BORDER UNION 17
I was delighted to receive an offer to judge my first set of CCâ s in one of my favourite breeds and thank the committee for not only the opportunity but also the wonderful hospitality and the fabulous weather they provided for us all to enjoy seeing lovely dogs shown at their best on their beautiful showground. I had the privilege of a lovely quality entry with only 1 absentee and I know it is a well worn cliché but I really did have to nit pick in a number of classes and many of them will change places many times in the future I am sure. I was extremely pleased with my final challenges and hope you all enjoyed the day as much as I did. This is a critique so I need to make a few small observations. I thought the overall quality was very good throughout with all dogs being clean and well groomed. You should all be congratulated on the temperaments of your dogs as they were all exemplary and for once I can say thank you to everyone for presenting their dogs with clean teeth! Some dogs may have been placed higher had they been in harder condition and sometimes I had to make a decision on ring presence. Little things can sometimes make a big difference and it is a show ring after all. Finally, thank you to my two lovely stewards and to the exhibitors for accepting my decisions in such a sportsmanlike way.
Puppy Dog (3)
1. Kendrickâ s Frisco Kiaora at Jeraro. 11month black dog with nothing I would change at this moment in time. This lad has strength and elegance from his strong masculine head with correctly set and fully fringed ears, excellent mouth and dark eye through his long well arched neck , correct front with good forechest , deep rib of good length , well moulded croup , strong broad hindquarters and well set and held tail. Coat just right for age and in gleaming condition he attracts attention immediately and he moved out beautifully to take this nice class of puppies. BP and delighted to see him go PG3 later in the day.
2. Marshallâ s Flanagan Show Stopper. Raw 6 month old cream who I see from the catalogue has the same sire as the winner. This one also has the essentials to mature well, he has a strong head with excellent bite, well set ears and endearing expression. Excellent angulation front and rear with good forechest, deep long rib and nicely moulded croup with well set and carried tail. Strong topline and moved with precision for one so young. So together and very promising.
3. Innesâ Skyeluck Finnish Flash (TAF). 9mth well grown cream of excellent type and in good coat for age. Very raw and at his first show but much to like as he has an attractive headpiece with excellent bite and typical expression. Good length of neck and well placed front with good forechest. Rib of good depth but could be a tad longer. Well angulated behind and well set tail. Losing his topline on the stand which spoils the overall picture. Handler tells me she is a bit rusty at the moment as she hasnâ t been in the ring for about 10 years. Keep practicing as he is well worth persevering with.

Post Grad Dog (1)
1. Woodheadâ s Knowlespring Drummer Boy. Very masculine 18mth lovely clear cream with nothing to dislike. Balanced strong head with good bite and fabulous black points, well fringed ears, long neck, well balanced front with well placed elbows and good forechest. Excellent ribbing and strong topline. Very well moulded croup and well set tail which he carries well, just needs to get his act together and polish up the performance and he will be hard to beat. Loved him.
Limit Dog (4)
1. Thompsonâ s Glorfindel Shadow Boxer ShCM . 3yo silver of lovely type . Very masculine with excellent head properties and typical expression. Presents a balanced picture standing and moving as he is so well made all through. Very strong and with a well angulated straight front with good forechest and strong matching hind quarters and well set tail he could not fail to impress to take top spot in this good class. Once he gets into his stride he has a free flowing action holding his topline well. Really impressive dog who can only get better and he pushed the top 2 hard .
2. Largeâ s Juger Eidelweiss Mickey Mouse is Madaza. 2 ¾ yo who hasnâ t yet made his mind up about what colour he wants his straight good textured coat to be. Very strongly made drop eared dog with good headpiece and excellent bite . Neck could be longer to advantage but he is well put together with a very firm topline from good length of rib, strong loin and good muscle tone. Well placed and well angulated front, good depth to chest and broad hindquarters. Well held tail carried low on the move. Moves well but could be a little more enthusiastic.
3. Mcleodâ s Juger Eidelwiess Me Myself and I at Esgia. Cream litter brother to the 2nd and fairly similar in size and shape although he is a tad longer. Another drop ear with a good headpiece and better length of neck . Well angulated front and rear and well moulded in croup but not the muscle tone of 2 so just lost out as he was losing his topline at times.
Open Dog (5)
1. Curtisâ Ch. Brakemill Barnum ShCM. 5 year old cream dog I have judged before and have always liked. Presents a very appealing picture on the stand, very masculine with strong well balanced head and good ear fringes, dark eye and typical expression. Sufficient neck, excellent forehand and strong topline, well angulated broad hindquarters and well set tail. In super coat and condition this lad comes into his own on the move where he commands the ring with his proud head carriage and free flowing gait. Never disappoints and didnâ t again today. CC.
2. Marshallâ s Emoticon Kiaora Glorfindel . Another cream I have always liked and at 4 1/2 years old is now coming to his best. Smaller in frame than one and built on more elegant lines but still masculine and with a slightly better reach of neck this lad is also very well put together, being long , low and level . Well balanced angulation, good ribbing and condition all combine to produce a typy Skye who I thought was going to be my CC winner. Unfortunately his proficient handler was not feeling too well on the day and consequently was not able to allow him to move out as he usually does and how I know he can, however, I could not overlook his quality so was rewarded with the RCC.
3. Breezeâ Ch. The Magnificent One . 3 year old masculine silver of good size and well proportioned with long, strong head with excellent bite and typical expression. Liked his length of neck and he is well angulated fore and aft, good forechest and depth of rib , broad hindquarters with plenty of strength and good tail set and carriage. Moved well but just not as firm in topline as the 1st and 2nd.

Puppy Bitch (3)
1. Parkersâ Tweedsmuir Feebee Mine 7 month old cream who I swear has been here before having a cheeky but wise knowing look in her dark eyes. What a little charmer, so well proportioned and together for one so young. Balanced head with good ear set, excellent bite, good length of neck, straight strong front set on well with prominent sternum and good depth of rib, lovely length of rib and strong loin with well moulded croup. Long, low and level and moving out with great composure. What more could you want at that age? Very promising young lady.
2. Innesâ Skyeluck Finn Carelia. 9 month black, larger than the first with more length but more rangy so needs time to come together. Lots to like, lovely headpiece with typical expression and excellent bite. Good length of neck and well angulated fore and aft. Good forechest and strong in hindquarters with well moulded croup. Lost out to the winner on topline and movement as she was not so well coordinated. Another promising puppy presented in gleaming coat
3. Shawâ s Tweedsmuir Fancy Free. 7 month black litter sister to the winner but not so advanced in body and just lacking confidence so not showing herself to advantage. Very nicely put together, in gleaming coat with sweet expression, excellent bite and well fringed ears there is nothing to dislike, she is very feminine with good proportions, well angulated and with all the essentials to finish well. Just needs time and some ring training.
Junior Bitch (3)
1. Gallondean Foreign Spirit. Well schooled cream of 15 months in good coat for age and with a pretty but strong head of good proportions. Good bite and ears well set and fringed. Sufficient length of neck to balance with length of body and this one also has a strong straight front with good sternum and well fitting elbows. Rib is of good depth and carries well back with strong loin maintaining a level topline at all times. Broad hindquarters and well set tail from correct croup. Balanced angulation which shows in her free flowing stride. Handled to advantage.
2. Robertsâ Glorfindel Effort at Sunabil. Not so different to the winner, also a 15 month cream of similar size and proportion in good coat and condition. All above comments regarding conformation apply to this pretty very typy Skye; her handler just needs confidence and a little more experience in the ring to enable her to show off the obvious quality of this youngster.
3. Shawâ s Tweedsmuir Fancy Free.

Post Graduate Bitch (3)
1. Woodheadsâ Knowlespring Candy Cane. Cream litter sister to Post Grad. Dog, out of the same mould and in mature coat for age. I loved her length to height, well proportioned strong but feminine head, excellent bite, well set on forehand with correct elbow placement and straight strong forelegs, excellent ribbing, strong loin and well moulded croup with excellent tail set and carriage. She still has a lot of maturing to do and she should finish well. Lots of quality, loved her. Close up for the RCC, just needs time to settle to show off her free flowing action.
2. Brydenâ s Esgia Sula Froya. Very pretty and well made silver just over 2 years of age who has all the essentials to challenge her competitors but prefers to challenge her very proficient and patient handler instead! Liked her for size and she is in super coat and condition, has a lovely headpiece with good ear set and fair length of neck with strong straight front, good ribbing and well moulded croup all combining to create a striking outline . Very frustrating but worth persevering with. Saw enough decent movement to earn her this place.
3. Shuttleworthâ s Perrylands Cassidy. Another who impressed me for her type, size and length to height. 3 ½ year old silver in great coat with attractive head and expression, good ear set, just lacking a little fringing, good length to neck, well balanced angulation and good forechest. Unfortunately carrying a little too much weight today which affected her topline. Can move.
Limit Bitch (4, 1 absent)
1. Mcleodâ s Noap Charoit Madlen Mardzheri at Esgia. The name is longer than the dog! Very pretty and very feminine silver and at 2 ¾ years old is maturing along the right lines. I loved her balance; smaller than the 2nd and 3rd she is so well made, well conditioned and well schooled I couldnâ t resist. Very attractive in head and expression with well set ears and excellent bite. Good length to neck and forehand construction just right. Excellent ribbing underpinning dead level topline and well moulded croup. Tail set correct and held well on the move enhancing her sound, active and positive action. Didnâ t put a foot wrong.
2. Smithâ s Marrcrieff Glen Glamis. Another I liked for her length to height and her type. Dark silver, 4 ½ year old strong but feminine and in good coat and condition. Overall construction is good with nothing to dislike, she is balanced fore and aft and has a well placed front with good forechest and is well ribbed. Hindquarters are strong and tail set fine. Unfortunately not in total unison with her handler on the move but saw enough to convince me she moves well.
3. Zvedzinaâ s Juger Eidelweiss Mary Poppins. 2 ¾ year old very attractive cream in fabulous coat and condition presenting a super outline on the stand with excellent head properties topped off by beautifully fringed dark ears correctly set. Good length of neck leads smoothly into level topline and good croup. Balanced in angulation and with substance that does not interfere with her femininity she is a little taller than the 2nd and 3rd but it was her movement that unfortunately let her down on the day. She may have been feeling the heat and looked a little out of alignment on the out and back. I am sure her day will most definitely come.

1. Curtisâ Brakemill Briar Rose. At 5 years old this silver is now at her best. Her overall quality shines through and I could watch her move all day long. I find it hard to fault this bitch; long, low, level, presented to perfection and in great condition. You know you have a good one when your hands flow over smoothly and everything just fits. She is not glamourous, she is just correct. I had no hesitation in handing her the CC and BOB and thought she looked a picture in the Group.
2. Breezeâ Salena Silver Sapphire. As her name suggests, silver 3 year old with much to admire. Strong feminine head with excellent bite, good length of neck, well placed forehand construction with prominent sternum and good depth to rib , good length and broad hindquarters finished off with correct tail set and in good coat and condition. Not quite the length of the winner but overall a lovely example of the breed and it is on the move when she comes into her own with proud head carriage and free and easy action. RCC.
Veteran (1)
1. Barracloughâ s Ch/Sw Ch Skyeotts Amnesix High skye Miracle at Wemoway. I gave this black drop ear BIS when I judged the Open show a few years ago and my opinion has not changed. She is a very well proportioned, strong Skye of excellent type still retaining her typical outline and full well presented coat, everything in the right place, she is feminine and dignified. Now, at 11 years of age she is just carrying a little extra weight and had to give way to youth on the day. Still love her. Best Veteran.
