SEALYHAM JUDGE CRUFTS 13

Sealyham Terriers

I considered it a great honour to be invited to judge a native Welsh breed at the most famous & prestigious dog show in the world.

I was surprised & delighted with the quality of the Sealys shown under me. All were healthy, fit for purpose with no bad mouths. Credit must go to the breeders for maintaining the breed in the shape it is today.

Crufts is a truly ‘international’ show & I probably had some of the best Sealyhams in the world currently being shown.

Without a doubt Sealyhams are the most difficult breed of terriers to exhibit in the show ring. To prepare a Sealyham takes hours & hours of work for weeks on end. So much so that when Peter Green first went to America in the 1960s he went with the understanding – no Sealyhams! Then what happened, a decade later when, on one of his frequent trips home, he persuaded Derrick Thomas to coax the owner Bobby Jones to part with Dersane Bobbys Girl. The rest is history & ‘Binnie’ went on to win BIS at Westminster. This shows the endearing nature of this fantastic breed.

With international competition today comes world class exhibits & handlers. This inevitably leads to higher standards of both the dogs, their training & preparation. This was evident on the day which I feel is required to succeed at this level of competition.

VD (1)

1 Evans & Haslem’s Ch Nileda Executive Date at Sunnyview, well balanced, fit & healthy dog coming up to 9 years. Tan markings on head giving pleasing appearance & forehand. Ideal size, correct make & shape, good coat & free moving.

PD (1) A.

JD (1)

1 Bettis’ Ornella Okay Yaa, correct size, body shape & weight, really good moving dog. Good head, expression & tailset. A little apprehensive, nevertheless a nice dog. I would like a little more coat. Well turned out & in good show condition.

PGD (2)

1 Weser & Ottosson Gersner’s All About Aksel of Cesky Dream’s, classy young dog who will have a bright future when fully mature. Tan markings to attractive head, good body shape, level topline & good set on, sound mover, very well presented. BP;

2 Titchmarsh’s Llawhaden’s Mr Stringer, correct sized dog, in good order throughout. Not quite as sound as 1. Very nice dog. I note he is a litter brother of my RBCC winner.

LD (2)

1 Bettis’ Polrose Parker Plus Ornella, real stallion type dog, full of himself. Badger markings on head giving a lovely expression, great coated dog, correct make, shape & show condition. When finally decided to settle he moved freely.

OD (8)

1 Hawks & Bledge’s Ch/Am Ch Blomendal’s Born In The USA at Thunder Road, super stallion who commands attention when he enters the ring. Badger markings on lovely head, good length of neck, level well rounded body, good mover, beautifully presented. Shortlisted in the group & really looked the part in the big arena. CC & BOB; 2 Ivonovskaya’s Rus Ch Saore Light Up The Sky, really well presented top quality dog. I feel will get better with age & maturity. Lovely head & expression, well balanced throughout, good set on, good mover. RCC; 3 Majo’s Es/Pt Ch Unjedi To Bucky With Love, made up a trio of top quality dogs. This is now an international show with, probably, the best dogs in the world competing. GCD (0).

VB (2) 1 Longmate’s Polrose Phyll, 9 years, in excellent shape, lovely size & balance, good head & expression, level topline & good set on, moved soundly;

2 Matthews’ Ch Leomona Star Appeal, 9 years, in excellent shape, very little separated these two. Both lovely, fine & feminine examples of the breed. 1 maintained her topline a little better when moving which settled the placings. Credit to both owners.

PB (4)

1 Lewis’ Nomis Naughty And Nice, tan markings to pretty feminine head, good make & shape. A real handful but when decided to settle moved freely;

2 Daly’s Tough Cookie, badger markings on head which gives her an attractive expression. Really good mover & well balanced, feminine lady;

3 Jones’ Jacott Joyful Dream for Tommarv, a proper handful for her young handler who did a good job of finally controlling her charge. When finally settled to move was sound. Lovely balanced bitch. Would improve with more furnishing which will come in time.

JB (2)

1 Ruddock’s Jacott Juniper Gem for Flojo, pretty feminine bitch, just out of puppy. Really well balanced, good tailset & correct size, sound mover;

2 Trezise-Dundas’ Cibach Carys at Firstwish, pretty bitch of correct size, well balanced throughout. A little apprehensive on the move which spoilt her chances a little. Nevertheless a nice bitch.

PGB (3)

1 Gledhill’s Tevant Elderflower, good head, expression, make & shape, level topline maintained when moving, sound mover;

2 Beales’ Marvicta Material Girl, well presented, in good coat, body weight & condition. A little apprehensive on the move which affected her topline.

2 Longmate’s Ch Polrose Penny Black for Pendalin, an absolute favourite of mine, shortly coming up to veteran stage but still can win. Not disgraced in any way in this sort of company. A credit to her hander for bringing her in top condition & coat;

3 Thomas’ Cibach Cristal Clear, making up a trio of top class bitches. Lovely make & shape, head & expression, level topline, tail on top, free mover.
