Scottish Terrier Club (Scotland)
125th Anniversary Show

It is always an honour to be asked to judge an anniversary show of a breed club but to be asked to do this as your first foray into giving CC’s in the breed is very special indeed and I thank the committee for the opportunity.
The organisation of the show was first class, sponsorship had been obtained and so many specials were on offer. The atmosphere throughout the day was a credit to the organisers and the exhibitors. The ring stewards were as good as you could get.
As a general comment, I found only 1 “iffy” mouth but loaded shoulders and overweight dogs and bitches were unfortunately quite common as were turned out forefeet. Many also lacked good rear angulation.

My BIS and Dog CC was Millers BRIO OLIVER TWIST. He won through from a very strong open class where there were 4 champions present. He excels in breed type. He is very low to ground with a lovely front giving him a pleasing run in. His head is clean across the skull and well balanced between skull and foreface. He is short coupled and has a well rounded chest. On the move he is very steady and drives well from the rear. Beautifully presented. Today he entered the upper house and is a very worthy champion.

Everything I have said about the BIS also applies to the Reserve Dog CC winner and RBIS Coley’s Ch Kingsview Just Stewart.  A  strong dog of the correct type. Sound in all departments and presented to perfection. I know it is a cliché but they could change places easily but on the day I went for Oliver Twist because of his presence.

The Bitch CC winner  and BOS was Annan’s Lomondview Athol Rose who came through from the Limit class. In terms of conforming to the standard, she had everything I was looking for but it was her showmanship which won the day, tail up, head up and moving so freely fore and aft she presented a lovely picture of a very typical Scottish Terrier. Her first CC but surely only the start of her career.

The Reserve Bitch CC went to Kenny’s Ch. Millingford Cloudberry who presented a very clean outline and moved very well. I would have liked her to be a size bigger but what was there cannot be faulted and she is a very worthy champion.

Best Puppy came from the most annoying class of the day which was Puppy bitch as the first four were in my opinion all worthy of a winning place but Annan’s Lomondview Miss Mink took the top spot on showmanship and ring presence so hard to find in one so young. She stacks herself so very well and asks to be noticed in a class of very good puppies.

Minor Puppy Dog. 1

(1) Tunstall’s Liroda Harris Tweed.  A very nice brindle youngster who presented a good outline,  a little ring shy but has a well balanced head and strong hindquarters.

Puppy Dog. 3

(1) Vickers and Byrne’s Eskwyre Just William. A lovely 10 month brindle. Good clean head, well balanced. Shoulder placement very pleasing. Moved well in the class but was not happy in the challenge.

2nd Annan’s Lomondview Golden Wonder, very similar to the winner but slightly heavier especially on the shoulders.

3rd Todd’s Eskwyre Waterloo Sunset.

Junior Dog 4 (4)

A difficult class to split 1st and 2nd but Aiken’s brindle  Slievecroob Fergus won out over Beckton’s  wheaten  Glengracie Formula One. Conformation was good on both dogs and both were of a good type though the winner looked lower to ground than the 2nd because of having a better coat at the moment. Heads were good on both dogs and this was pleasing to see as some other wheaten dogs lacked in head.

3rd  Dauncey’s Glenmiar Macalistair.

Novice Dog 4 (4)

1st  The wheaten Benartybrae Macarena, 19 months old and with a good strong head had the edge over

2nd  Annan’s Lomondview Golden Wonder. Both dogs presented a pleasing outline and had correct neck and shoulders. The winner was more mature.

3rd Glenmiar Macalistair who is a nice dog but went 3rd in both classes  because he would not show in the hall, outside at lunchtime he looked a very different dog.

Graduate Dog 1 (1) Glengracie Formula One.

Post Graduate Dog 1

(1)Dale’s Phoenix Du Moulin De McMonique at Lynnsto.  Beautifully presented black dog. Pleasing neck and shoulders, good length of head. Short coupled and moved very well.

Limit Dog 4 (2).

1st Annan’s Lomondview Copper Coin a brindle with lovely neck and shoulders moved very well too when paced properly.

2nd Rutherfords Carisco Midas Touch, a wheaten with many advantages but shoulders  rather upright.

Open Dog 5 (5)

1st  Miller’s  Brio Oliver Twist. 2nd  Coley’s Ch Kingsview Just Stewart

3rd Tovey’s  Ch. Trackside Flying Scotsman at Charmic.

Special Triers Bitch 1 (1)

1 Rae’s Slievecroob Bothwell Babe.  Decent head, well balanced and dog well trimmed but hiding upright shoulders and would benefit from losing weight.

Minor Puppy Bitch. 3 (3)

Difficult class to judge as all puppies were raw 6 month olds in this class.

1st   Dale’s  Celebrity Du Moulin De McMonique at Lynnsto. A rather rangey  youngster  who needs to drop to complete the picture. Coat very well presented.

2nd Milburn-Gates Liroda Paisley Print, a nice type of brindle did not move as well as winner on the day.

3rd  Kelly’s Carseview Hurricane Hannah.

Puppy Bitch.

This was my class of the day in terms of finding 4 quality dogs who really could change places. 1st  Annan’s Lomondview Miss Mink.

2nd  Boyce’s Trackside Scotsman Girl, a lovely black bitch beautifully presented, very pleasing outline, moved and showed very well.

3rd Eskwyre Eclipse and I must mention 4th Tatler Tweedbank at Feregait. All had good outlines and moved very well.

Junior Bitch 2 (1)

1 McDonald’s Megs Sitting Proud Lass. OK type nothing radically wrong.

Novice Bitch 6 (6)

1st   Annan’s Lomondview Miss Mink .2nd  Lawrence’s Chatterdale Sweet Star of Sweetgarret. Well balanced head  super harsh black coat movement good.

3rd   Rimmer’s Gothtayle Macy’s Bonnir Girl.

Graduate and Post Graduate Bitch were very difficult classes to judge as  nothing of any great merit was entered  though 5 (5) were in graduate and 6 (1) appeared in Post Graduate. In the main it was the same dogs. Most were oversized and overweight with very loaded shoulders .Unfortunately the best conformation was Minshall’s Forestree Cherry Laurel once I could get her still enough to assess. She barked through the whole process and because virtually the same dogs came in both classes we were treated to a very noisy few minutes!

Limit Bitch 5 (1)

1st  Annan’s Lomondview Athol Rose.

2nd Milburn Gates Liroda Liquorice Lace. A lovely black bitch very similar in type to the winner but not as outgoing.

3rd  Flippix Carma Queen at Eskwyre.

Open Bitch  3 (1)

1st ) Kenny’s Ch Millingford Cloudberry. 2nd Kelly’s Ch. Glenboig Lady Gaga At Carseview. Super hard coated bitch very well presented, moved and shows very well.

Veteran Bitch.

1st Annan’s Lomondview  Catalina. Still keeps a lovely outline, moves and shows very well.

2nd Lawrence’s Turnaware Tarri of Sweetgarret another good example of how the breed retains its youth!
