SKC May 23 Judge

SCOTTISH SKC MAY 23 Judge: Mr Howard OGDEN SCOTTISH JUDGE SKC MAY 23 This is my Mark II critique, the prompt original being somewhere in the ether between my mobile and OD. I so appreciated this opportunity to award CCs in the breed for the first time, albeit a Terrier Group judge, having obtained a JDP Credit 10yrs previously and been given the privilege of a West of England Club show in 2016. Ongoing education is so vital, particularly for a non-specialist.Part of my homework included my saved OD feature on the breed from 1983 as headed up by Maureen Micklethwaite. Of the 29 exhibits just 4 were absent. 1 Rutherford, Carisco Colour Of The Wind; 11m brindle; bit long in foreface that may have accounted for him currently being undershot, as sportingly acknowledged; such obvious breed qualities; head is clean; almond eye; neat ear; medium neck; well ribbed; level through to wellset tail; ex jacket; rounded backend; absolutely sound with some drive; fingers crossed. 1 Nixon, Tout Nouveau Tout Beau du Clan des Petits Colonels; 16m had previously admired in a Stakes class, and still do; long, clean head with keen expression; did take note today that his bite was imperfect; sturdy & shortbacked, yet with sufficient clearance; muscular rear; ex tailset; hardest of jackets; so sound as to see right through him. 2 Forsyth & Forsyth, Queens Legacy at Kierview; 16m blk of quality; lovely headed scoring in length, in eye & ear; moderate neck; well bodied; well angulated; level; not as high in tailset & insisted on sniffing his way around the ring! 1 Ashworth, Russalan Crimson Coburn for Naviba; blk just on 2yrs; immediately filled my eye, bringing together so much that have been taught as represents breed type in abundance; brick- shaped head of equal proportions; flat skull; clean cheeks; distinct stop; almond eye; strong muzzle; he had forechest slung between his front legs yet still had clearance; muscled, moderate neck; well angulated; short & level; ribs extending well back to a short, thick loin; meaty, muscled rear behind a well set tail that was thick at its root & of a length to give balance to his outline; ex jacket with undercoat, so well presented; loved his superior attitude as he pushed soundly off a short hock; gave a repeat performance in the challenge so as to take it in style; note, now, that others have certified him as of Ch quality so hope he wins through. Dog Challenge Certificate. 2 McNiven, Frazandmitch Top Of The Game; blk rising 2yrs; truly expressive head with a strong, deep muzzle; well ribbed; gd rump; ex jacket; that bit longer & couldn’t match the forechest. 3 Tout Nouveau T B du C des P C. 1 Nitka, Katarzyna Szkocka Elita Hubercik; 4yrs blk & another who was undershot; so frustrating in such a quality exhibit; almond eye; clean cheeks; length to his proportionate head; gd in neck & shoulder; had clearance; well bodied if a tad long; level; harsh jacket; straight moving. 1 Aiken & Aiken, Slievecroo Biscuit; 3.5yrs wheaten who kept growing on me; so sturdy & strong throughout; so proportionate throughout; almond eye; well spaced ear; strength in muzzle; muscular neck into well laid shoulder; short & level; well muscled rear behind a well set tail; close jacket; upped the game on the move with such a consistent performance that was not only sound but with an air of dignity. Dog Reserve Challenge Certificate. 2 Kelly & Kelly, Ch Carseview Mr Goodfella; 5yrs brindle of instant appeal, not least as so well turned out & conditioned; preferred the cleaner lines of his head of proportionate length divided by distinct stop, so as to be unmistakably brick-like; scored in eye & ear; muscular neck; well angulated; scored in rib & muscular rump with width; textbook, immaculate, double coat; the difference was that he was more rectangular in outline & came on less accurately; most worthy of Champions. 1 Queens L at K. 2 F Top Of The G. 3 Tout Nouveau T B du C des P C. 1 McCracken, Carisco Myrtle Beach to Amawyn; 11m brindle litter sister to the PD that explained her absolute quality; not about to repeat the breed standard but all is where it should be; scored notably in skull, ears & muzzle; gd bone & feet; short & level; great backend; gd tail carriage; ex jacket; hard jacket; could see right through her on the move; nothing worth changing; surely Ch potential. BPIB. 2 Aiken & Aiken, Slievecroob MacLili; 7m brindle of a v gd type; feminine head with gd features; has forechest at one end & rounded rump at the other; simply more raw in her development so as to be that bit longer & stood with hocks a little tucked under; but the future promise is all there as are the benefits of maturity. 3 Jackson, Fennekin Gothic Girl. 1 MacKay & Kirk-Gellatly, Whitwitch No Mercy; 2yrs blk half-sister of PB courtesy of Ch Millingford Hudson who appears to have been effectively busy! Ex type; gd skull, eye & muzzle; well angulated & well ribbed back; short & level; well boned; great backend that enabled a level gait with such drive; she should surely have moved up the ranks by the time you are reading this. 2 Redfern, Eimahan’s Leap of Faith; 2.5yrs blk & a quality exhibit; long, clean head with a keen almond eye & strength through muzzle; well proportioned body through to a highset tail; great rump with well bent stifles; not quite as short & a little less accurate coming on. 3 McGlennon & Norton, Divadell Who’s That Girl TAF. 1 Kirk-Gellatly, Whitwitch Fire Starter; 2yrs blk who I see is 100% Millingford bred; struck me as of a classic breed type; Dan Ericsson, wrote in OD breed feature in 2020 that “the essence of the breed is of a sturdy, short-backed, thickset dog with good bone, deep body, hard double coat, long clean head, well-set tail, big quarters moving and showing with an air of dignity” so that’s her critique done with probably more to come, being still relatively young, as I trust her subsequent show record is proving. Bitch Challenge Certificate. 2 Rutherford, Carisco Equinox; 2.5yrs blk full sister to the PB; as you would expect of obviously gd breed type throughout; prefer darker eye; short; well developed through both front & rear; gd rib & short loin; ex jacket; well active on the move, just rising in backline when circuiting. 3 Redfern, Whistlynarra Whistling Wind Of The Glen 1 Kelly & Kelly, Carseview Storm In a Teacup; 5yrs blk litter sister to 2nd in OD; same outstanding breed type & should be titled like him; my judging book reads “punishing” head, denoting length with strength through muzzle, notwithstanding her sex; keen, almond eye; short; ribbed; angulated; rump with width; jacket; all these breed specifics came together when she moved that was straight with drive. Bitch Reserve Challenge Certificate. 2 Kirk-Gellatly, Millingford Stargazer; 4yrs blk half-sister to the Bitch CC via their dam Ch M Fire Queen; lots of classic breed type accordingly; clean cheeked, long head; moderate neck; forechest; ribbed well back; well angulated; was just rising in her backline; short & sturdy; big, wide buttocks; gd jacket; moved so straight with anticipated drive. 1 Willis & Willis, Trakside Cobalion; rising 8yrs; apologise for not noting her coat colour & don’t want to presume; outstanding for type; keen in expression from a dark, almond eye; long, clean head down to a strong muzzle; short, sturdy & level; enviable double coat, immaculately turned out; moved free & sound with that air of dignity; would not have been the least surprised had she been titled. BVIB. SBB (5) 1 C Myrtle Beach to A. 2 Whistling Wind Of The G; 5yrs blk who placed Res in LB; lovely character with plenty of breed type whether through her head or her body; short & certainly sturdy; harshest of coats; just carrying some extra body condition plus it was “that time of the month”. 3 D Who’s That Girl
