SCOTTISH NATIONAL TERRIER 14 Judge(s): MRS C E CARTLEDGE (RYSLIP) Scottish Terriers A lovely entry of 63 awaited me at National Terrier, this very special show for terrier people. Our ring was in the annexe & some of the dogs certainly did not like the noise & echoes. I was pleased with the puppies who took it all in their stride. It was a pity there was no veteran class scheduled as I had quite a few older Scotties who were well presented & conditioned but who couldn’t quite hold their own against 2-3 year olds. Temperaments throughout were excellent. Several were shown overweight & there were some rather big, hefty bitches who for me lacked femininity. Presentation could have been better here & there – masses of furnishings left on the outside of the hindquarters & front legs do not enhance the finished look of a well turned out Scottie. There were a few with wide set, large ears but they were in the minority. MPD (0). PD (4) 1 BP & RCC, Plane’s Stuane Kings Sword, 9 months black, comfortable winner, very together for one so young, such a sound mover with excellent reach & drive, short back, tail on top, good coat texture, well bodied. Keen & alert in expression & demeanour, full of character, just looked better & better & in the challenge could not be denied the RCC; 2 Earl’s Eskwyre Tom Foolery at Rolanka, 11 months brindle, no mistaking him for anything but a full blooded male. Masculine head, muscular neck, big body & rib, well presented & handled, good bone & substance. Not moving too well in front; 3 Hill’s Samstever Gold Amulet. JD (5,1a) 1 Plane’s Stuane Royal Myth, 11½ months, half brother to PD winner. Quality puppy, in good form, steady showman, good bone & depth of chest, clean head of good length, intelligent expression, neat ears, sturdy body, harsh jacket, good tailset & carriage, moved quite well; 2 Todd’s Eskwyre Waterloo Sunset, 17 months black, masculine head, well rounded ribs, deep chest, ample bone, moved OK, showed well when something took his interest. Ears a little wide set, coat not as harsh as 1. Slightly long cast; 3 Hardy’s Magandthan Black Bronze. PGD (6,1) Difficult class as a couple who I liked just refused to show. 1 Sykes’ Sandbourne Ready Freddie Go, 23 months brindle, harsh coat but presentation could be improved. Focused showman who moved quite well. Typical head of good length, dark eyes, fit & well muscled; 2 Meek’s Benartybrae Macarena at Benbetham, half brother to 1. 2 years wheaten, excellent coat texture, strong body, showed with spirit when he felt like it. Excellent bone. Just a little plain in head; 3 Greenwood’s Petmon Royal Magician. LD (5,1) 1 Shaw’s Elfricia New Adventure with Terratom, black, coming up to 4, good size & type, won this class with a bit to spare. Well conditioned & presented, excellent coat, well proportioned with good ribcage, most attractive head & expression, performed well. Good tailset & carriage; 2 Rees’ Rabbonai Gilead at Miacarla, 4½ years black, up to size, coat not in the form of 1. Masculine head, good bone, deep chest, happy showman, responding well to his handler. Moved OK; 3 Greenwood’s Petmon Light Of My Life. OD (5,1) 1 CC, Rutherford’s Carisco Midas Touch, 2½ years wheaten with very good coat texture. Fit & healthy with firm sturdy body, good bone, ribs carried well back, muscular neck, level topline, moved with a purpose, showed with composure & fully deserved the CC, his first after 4 RCCs. I liked his head & expression, dark almond shaped eyes & very good pigment; 2 Beckton’s Glengracie Formula One, 2 years & another wheaten. Same sire as 1. Pleasing head & expression, good body & bone, steady showman, active mover, alert & interested in all around him, well proportioned & coated; 3 Green & Farrand’s Royal Dragoon Captain Colin Campbell. MPB (2) 1 Boyce’s Trakside Fairy Queen, 8 months black, quite mature looking for age, well coated & bodied, feminine head, dark keen eyes, good topline & quarters, high spirited showgirl, well handled; 2 Becquet & Darby’s Kingsview Just One More Becscott, brindle, just 6 months & such a baby Attractive head. Needs to grow into her ears. Sturdy body, good neckline, relaxed showgirl. Still very soft puppy coat. PB (4,1) 1 Plane’s Stuane Sword Dancer, 9 months, litter sister to the ‘wonder boy’ in PD, same sort of carefree attitude. Showed well, attractive head, expressive eyes, short back, good tailset, lovely coat & body. Promising; 2 Kenny & Kirk’s Millingford Royal Ermine, 10½ months quality black, good head, well conditioned & presented, excellent coat, well muscled quarters, strong body, moved OK, good potential; 3 Healey’s Eskwyre Be My Valentine at Penjetta. JB (7,1) Nice class. 1 Plane’s Stuane Curtana, litter sister to JD winner. Delightful black, steady showgirl who trotted her stuff with confidence. Attractive head, good bone & depth of chest, well muscled quarters, well proportioned, well fitting jacket, well handled & presented. BPB & pressed hard for BP; 2 Milburn-Gates’ Liroda Paisley Print, 14 months brindle, quite a big girl, well constructed, very fit, good length of head, stylish showgirl, harsh coat, strong body, moved OK; 3 Meek’s Benartybrae Love In A Mist at Benbetham. PGB (9,4) 1 Chapman’s Berrybreeze Born To Boogie, 20 months, good looking black, gorgeous coat & condition, pleasing head, firm & fit, excellent topline & quarters, moved well. Bit too feisty with the others in the class, needs a firm hand; 2 Rowland & Rees’ Dottys Little Girl at Rabbonai, 23 months, good bone & substance, ribs well back, typical head, size bigger than 1 & could be a little more fluent in movement; 3 Kirk’s Whitwitch Twigglet. LB (9,3) 1 CC & BOB, Averis’ Gemma Stonehenge Remuage, won a good class, 20 months black, very smart & focused youngster who never put a foot wrong in this class, in the challenge or when competing for BOB. Clean outline, well balanced, feminine head & outlook, beautifully presented, well fitting coat, best of toplines, sound mover, good tailset, showed non stop, handled to perfection; 2 Boyce’s Trakside Scotsmans Girl, another top quality youngster, excellent type, good head, dark eyes, good bone & body, showed with composure. Not quite the movement of 1; 3 Young’s Stuane Floral Dance. OB (7,2) 1 RCC, Chapman’s Berrybreeze Glad All Over, 3½ years, well put together, good steady performer, very clean & well presented, excellent coat, made a good picture both standing & moving. Quality head, intelligent expression, strong body. In the final run off I just preferred the shorter back of the Limit winner; 2 Annan’s Lomondview Athol Rose, 2½ years black of good quality, short back, good tailset & carriage, typy & well bodied, ribs carried well back, attractive head, keen expression, handled to best advantage. Coat not at its best today; 3 Shaw’s Terratom Latte. LIZ CARTLEDGE |
