SCOTTISH JUDGE CRUFTS 15

Scottish Terriers

My special thanks to Crufts committee for inviting me to judge one of my favourite breeds. In days gone by I used to own & handle many champion Scotties & for me it is sad to see numbers drop so much in the UK in the past few years. So to have an entry of this size was amazing & uplifting too. How often do you see OD with 17 & OB with 22, really a sight for sore eyes. Little did I think that when the day started that I would be sending my BOB all the way to BIS, so thrilling to watch & proudly too.

I did have some concern in my entry. I have never found so many soft coats before, mostly in the blacks & toplines too were a problem as well. On the other hand I had some super heads with that true Scottie expression & with the correct eye placement.

I thoroughly enjoyed my day & with the help of two super stewards everything went like clockwork.

VD (4,1a)

1 Greenwood’s Petmon Light Of My Life, black dog who was in top form. Super head & expression, neat ears, good front, good coat texture, sound. Looks good for his age;

2 Lawrence’s Sweetgarret My Wee Geordie, brindle of good size, not as outgoing as 1 but I liked his head & expression very much. Good bone, good topline;

3 Cardy’s Blackthorpe Jet Ranger, black of smaller type. Not as good in head as 1 & 2 but for his age was in good coat. Well bodied & with a good topline. Could have put a bit more into moving.

PD (4)

1 Beckton’s Glengracie Galileo, promising puppy, not the best head but is the right size & most compact in the class. Good coat, moved very well;

2 Marsalova’s Glengracie Golden Daze, wheaten of larger size, higher on leg to 1. Long clean head, good front, moves OK. Coat could be a little harder;

3 Bradley & Herd’s Brueik I Have A Dream, black dog & not really enjoying his day & could have lifted his tail more. Not a big dog. I liked his head & expression, neat ears, would like him shorter coupled.

JD (6,2)

Very difficult class where coat texture was a major problem.

1 Khenkina’s Gemma Stonehenge Tannin Vinshoten, this dog excels in head & expression, neat small ears, good front. Would like him a little more compact but on the move was by far the best;

2 Hovagimyan’s Verascott Jumpin Jack Flash, black dog who was very full of himself & spoiled himself by not settling. The best textured coat in the class & at times felt he could win;

3 G Golden Daze.

PGD (9)

1 Hovagimyan’s Verascott Hurrican Run, black dog I liked a lot. Nice size, short & compact, well ribbed, masculine in head & expression, good front, soundest in this class;

2 Earl’s Eskwyre Tom Foolery at Rolanka, larger type brindle. Very smart. Little higher on leg to 1. Strong in head but not coarse. Excellent coat & presentation. Just let his owner down on the last run off;

3 Marcinekova’s Eshly Ir-It Scottish, wheaten dog, good coat & colour, good mover. Long clean head, nice small ears, good neck & shoulder, excellent topline, very nice on the move.

LD (5,1)

1 Dixon’s Millingford Royal Eclipse at Chatterdale, black dog, quite stood out here, nice size, long clean head & expression, good front, excellent topline, very sound, looked really well both standing & moving. Should do really well. RCC;

2 Hill’s Samsevever Gold Amulet, wheaten & not quite as ready as 1 but still a nice type, right size, best head on the wheatens in this class;

3 E It-It Scottish.

OD (17,5)

Wow, what a class, so many lovely Scotties.

1 Popova’s Rus Ch Anstamm Demur Lone Star, as soon as I put my hands on him I liked him. A true Scottie. Short coupled, stocky, super coat, super head & expression, sound & free moving & with an excellent coat & presentation. CC;

2 Baranchikova’s Int Ch Scotline Star Man, also black & so similar in many ways. Same type. Also moved so well. Not quite the front of 1 but it counted when I had to decide. Also in excellent coat & presentation, super head & expression, nice small ears;

3 Juel Hansen’s Dan/No/Sw/Nor/Fin/Lux/Cz Ch Filisite Brash Kingly Step, maybe only 3rd but still a dog I liked very much. Not quite as free on the move as above but again a true Scottie with strength & quality.

GCD (2,1)

1 P Light Of My Life.

VB (6,1)

Always a nice class to judge.

1 Mahmoudi’s Ch/Sw Ch Brio Inquizitive, black bitch, in great form. Looked so good for her 9 years. Super head & expression, nice small ears, good front, excellent coat & presented so well. Would not look out of place in the open class still;

2 Greenwood’s Petmon Miss Tiggywinkle, black again & so enjoying her day. 7½ years old & still looks good. Really moved well;

3 Corney’s Rilynson Island Princess, brindle, in great coat & body condition. OK in head type. Nice size, feminine, good neck & shoulders, good topline. Just didn’t move quite so well as those above.

PB (4)

1 Coley’s Kingsview Just Freya, very nice young black bitch, excellent type with lots of substance, very sound on the move. Excellent coat texture, well presented, good front. BP;

2 Rutherford’s Carisco My Leading Lady, very similar in some ways to 1. Needs just a bit more time to settle but on the table very nice to go over & lots to like about her. Well handled;

3 Dixon’s Sweetgarret Star over Chatterdale, black but much finer than 1 & 2 & for me would like a little more strength. Moves & shows so well but she is still very young & so lots of time on her side.

JB (6,1)

1 Hovagimyan’s Verascott Juicy Couture, black bitch, very nice to go over. Nearly spoilt her chances by being too full of herself;

2 Walker’s Beaureveur Cassia, brindle, nice honest bitch with a nice head & eye, neat ears, good topline & tailset;

3 Khenkina’s Gemma Stonehenge Tavel, slightly taller bitch. Good reach of neck. Not as compact as 1 & 2. In excellent coat, nice in head & expression, uses her ears all the time.

PGB (14,5)

1 Hovagimyan’s Verascott Handle With Care, very nice black bitch, such a good mover. Feminine yet with strength, super head & ears;

2 Kelly’s Carseview Queen Of The Mey, caught my eye as she came in & so nice to go over. In super coat & condition, she is sound, good front, excellent bone. Would just like her a touch shorter coupled;

3 Strnad’s Izy Hannah Moravia, brindle with a lovely head, good neck & shoulder, good topline. Can really move well, in good coat. Would just like a little more of her but still a nice bitch.

LB (14,3)

Another super class.

1 Annan’s Lomondview Signature, smart little brindle, so together both standing & moving. Nice size, good front, excellent neck & shoulder, excellent topline, super texture coat. Moved so well both ways & also in profile. In the challenge put on a great show & was awarded the RCC;

2 Hovagimyan’s Gavotte De Champernoune, black bitch & so much to like about her. Super head & expression, so good to go over on the table, right size, well bodied, low slung, super coat & presentation. This exhibitor showed some very nice dogs to me today too;

3 Rowland & Rees’ Dottys Little Girl at Rabbonai, so close & took my eye & thought she would be in my top 3. No disgrace to be here, it was a tough class. I really liked her.

OB (22,6)

What an amazing class & a joy to behold. Can’t say I have ever seen so many lovely bitches all together at once. Sadly I had to leave out some lovely bitches, but with just 5 places it was so hard.

1 Khenkina’s Rus/Blr/Ukr/Cro/Lit/Lat/Est/Balt/Slo/Pl/Am Ch McVan’s To Russia With Love, wherever do you start to describe such a beautiful bitch who went all the way to BIS? On the table she was like a beautiful piece of porcelain. On going over her, well she was faultless. Her head is a classic, long, clean & with strength & then she looks at you with that true Scottie expression. Neatest of ears which she never stopped using. She is the right size & balance, excellent firm topline & ribs to go with it. Her tail was bang on top. Her coat just gleamed & was perfect & when I asked her to move she couldn’t be faulted. Her handler has to be congratulated on the whole package & performance. Obviously the group & BIS judge thought the same. I was very proud to have sent her forward & to do great things for the breed. CC, BOB, G1 & BIS;

2 Krizova’s Gemma Stonehenge Remuage, although beaten into second place this was a really nice bitch. Right for type, she is well balanced & was in perfect coat also. Her head is strong & clean, strong foreface, good bone & front, well ribbed, excellent topline & tailset. She also moved so well & with a lot of style;

3 Baranchikova’s Int Ch Skailain’s I My Me, I see also from Russia, like 1 & 2. Completed a trio of super bitches & no disgrace to be here. Believe me it was a very tough class & yet this was another I really liked. Similar in type to 1 & 2, in top form & showed her head off. Again in pristine condition & could not have looked better.

GCB (3,2)

1 P Miss Tiggywinkle.
