SCOTTISH JUDGE BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 17

Scottish Terriers

I very much enjoyed judging the overall high quality entry. The vast majority of the exhibits were beautifully presented. I have to congratulate breeders on mouths as there were no incorrect bites & the teeth are the size you would expect to find on a much larger breed. I found a couple of exhibits who were out at elbow & a couple of fiddle fronts but in the main the breed is in fine fettle if this entry is any indication of the current state of the breed.

Exhibitors may have been somewhat disconcerted when the DCC, BCC & BP went to the same kennel. The puppy was alone & so was an inevitable choice however the dog & bitch winners were just my cup of tea & I was not surprised to discover that they were litter brother & sister as the type stood out.

The DCC winner & BOB, Pagram’s Torcraig Sydnificant, faced strong competition in the Open class & from the Limit class winner in the challenge, Plane’s Stuane Cloak And Dagger, RCC. Both are black & with good coats. They were of a similar size. Heads were well balanced on both dogs & ear placement could not be faulted on either exhibit. Both were short coupled & had good strong quarters. Movement front & rear was true in both exhibits though I felt that Sydnificant was somewhat steadier on the move & this coupled with the fact that I just preferred his shoulders gave him the nod. I know that it is trite to say but these two will change places but today was Sydnificant’s & sent him to the upper house.

The BCC went to the Open class winner, Pagram’s Ch Torcraig Sea Pearl. She took my eye as she entered the ring as she had a presence which demanded attention. Lovely clean skull with a good balance between skull & foreface. Ears well set. Correct front. Moved with drive & tail bang on top. In the challenge, her brother maintained his steady movement taking the top spot. The RBCC went to the Limit class winner, Becquet & Darby’s Minorlines Princess Royal Becscott, a very sassy petite brindle, so well balanced & full of herself when on the move. Lovely sloping shoulders, short coupled & well turned hocks which gave her the movement which was a joy to watch.

BP, Pagram’s Trackside Take Notice Torcraig, alone in her class & the only puppy shown today. A just over 6 months black who showed herself very well for one so young. She has a lovely clean head. Her shoulders are a little loaded at the moment but then shoulders are impossible to assess on such a youngster as they change with maturity.

1 Boyce’s Trakside Mr Goodbar, stood alone but was a very worthy winner. Brindle dog with super layback of shoulder & a head in balance with his body. Very strong bone. Deep chest. Moved well when he steadied but is still an exuberant youngster.

PGD (3,1a)

1 Worthington’s Kingsview Just Fraser, lovely brindle in good coat. Short coupled with a very typical head. He moves well though a little erratically, needs to steady himself;

2 Harrison Brown’s Trefaldwyn King David, a black dog, longer cast than the winner & needing furnishings especially on the head. His shoulders are somewhat loaded.

LD (2)

1 S Cloak And Dagger. RCC;

2 Farrand’s Ceilidh Quantam Maxxum at Amberyl, a black with a good length of head but overall longer cast then the winner. Shoulder angulation could be better though he benefits from a good length of neck which seems to compensate when viewed from the side. Needs more coat.

OD (4,1)

1 T Sydnificant. CC & BOB;

2 Kenny Marriot & Marriot’s Rus Millingford Kings Choice, another black dog similar in type to the winner. Typical head & correct movement. Super bone. I preferred the shoulders on the winner;

3 Hovagimyan’s Multi Ch Verascott Jumping Jack.

VD (1)

1 Hill’s Polwicks Black Tourmaline of Tahgmor, 11 year old who is carrying a little too much weight. He has the makings of a very good coat. Obvious symbiosis with him & his handler.

MPB (1)

1 T Take Notice T. BP.

PB (1)

1 T Take Notice T.

JB (4,1)

1 Emmins’ Miss Catastrophe Du Moulin De MacGregor;

2 Blackthorpe Bramble at Westerleigh, again, two very nice blacks similar in type. Tails bang on top & held on the move. Typical heads on both exhibits. Strong bone & both deep in chest. Shoulder angulation was good on both exhibits but the layback of the winner excelled;

3 Hill’s Skircoat Semibreve at Tahgmor.

PGB (2,1)

1 S Semibreve at T.

LB (6,1) 1 M Princess Royal Becscot. RCC;

2 Chapman, Bradley & Herd’s Brueik Tickled Pink by Berrybreeze, one I liked very much on the table. Short coupled, deep in chest, well balanced head. She just would not use her ears on the move & when confronted by another who is not putting a foot wrong, unfortunately has to go down the line;

3 Blackthorpe Blowzabella at Westerleigh.

OB (5)

1 Ch T Sea Pearl. CC;

2 Coley’s Ch Kingsview Just Freya, a very classy bitch in beautiful coat. She has all the essentials but today on the move was up against a bitch really enjoying her day & so lost out on sheer exuberance both in her class & in the challenge;

3 Hovagimyan’s Multi Ch Verascott Juicy Couture. VB (0).
