PARSON RUSSELL MANCHESTER 25 Judge: Mrs Kate Smith PARSON RUSSELL JUDGE MANCHESTER 25 Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge Parson Russell Terriers at Manchester. Thank you to the exhibitors for their entries and the sporting way in which they accepted their placings. I had to make some tricky decisions and sacrifices in some classes. I was very pleased with my main winners and was absolutely delighted with my final line up of bitches. I could have happily handed out further CCs on the day. Temperaments all sound. Lots of puppies at their first show, some more confident than others. Stafford can be a bit of a baptism of fire but most took in in their stride whilst some others will have greatly benefited from, what I hope, was a positive experience. Coats varied. As is often the case, the broken and smoother coats tended to be of better texture and density overall than some of the rough coats. Some rough coats were lacking density and thus missed out on higher awards but the coat that was there was the right texture. Some exhibits had thin coats that were not of the right texture for the breed and there was also a lack of undercoat in some cases and thin pelts. Type and size varied greatly across the entry. Some short rib cages were evident but spannability was generally good. I was pleased to see most had the correct rise over the loin coupled with the ‘moderately’ high tailset that was required for a PRT as opposed to the high set on tail required in a Fox Terrier. There were a number of unfit dogs, lacking in muscle and also some weak front pasterns and flat feet. The standard calls for strong flexible pasterns, compact feet with moderately arched toes and I was pleased to find some of those. Some long nails were also evident. PD (7,2) 1 Woods and Boorman’s Wayward Timeless. Lovely puppy for size and masculinity. Wedge shaped head of good proportions, with nice dark eye and good length of muzzle where many are a touch long. Neat ears that were well set. Strong jaw. Good neck and shoulder. Good topline with rise over the loin. Super broken coat of correct density and texture and a good pelt. Moves soundly. Easily spannable. He didn’t make his handler’s job an easy one but hopefully will settle with maturity. 2. Reed’s Gonetoground Emperor. A lovely puppy of super type, differing to 1. Lovely dark tri markings. Good strength of skull with a lovely ‘Parson’ expression. Lovely straight front, standing on compact feet. Good neck, shoulder and topline. Strong, well angulated hind quarters. Moved well and with time on his side, will hopefully have a good future. 3 Atkinson’s Vixenview Motte and Bailey with Raedwulf. Completed a trio of promising puppies. JD (3,0) 1 Wood and Boorman’s Wayward Timeless. 2 Anderson’s Foxfur Eavesdropper. A smart young dog of good size and proportions. Wedge shaped head with neat ears and dark eye. Very neat, straight front with compact feet. Good length of neck and shoulder. Good topline, super set on of tail and easily spanned. Moderately angulated hindquarters which he used well on the move. 3 Kirkby’s Mindlen Kuba. Completed a trio of nice young males. PGD (3,0) 1 Hooley’s Forgefox Roll the Dice with Hoolmark. Striking young dog with a wedge shaped head. Lovely neat ears, dark eye and strong jaw. Good length of neck. Standing on straight forequarters, strong pasterns and neat feet. Spannable chest with a correct topline, tailset and carriage. Good double coat and pelt. Moved soundly. 2 Bigland’s Heythrop Tamar. Masculine tri colour. Shade bigger all through than 1. Strong, wedge head shaped with a lovely dark eye and correct ear set. Good reach of neck and return of upperarm. Spannable. Nice straight front and standing on super feet balanced with well muscled hind quarters. Moved true coming and going. A little unsettled today. 3 Mitchell and Manson’s Foxfur Espionage. LD (4,2) 1 Bigland’s Heythrop Toptag. When he settled, this tri coloured dog presented a really lovely picture both standing and on the move. He was fit and of good size and moderate substance. Head of the correct proportions and wedge shaped with a dark ear and well placed neat ears. Lovely and straight fore when viewed from the front. He had lovely strong pasterns and compact feet. He had a good length of neck, moderate return of upperarm and well laid shoulder. Balanced with a moderately angulated hind that translated to a good ground covering action on the move RCC. 2 Woods and Boorman’s Pacolito Multiplicity with Vixenview. Dog of good size with a strong masculine head. Good reach of neck, well laid shoulder and a correct topline and tailset. Moderately angulated forequarters with his hind giving a balanced picture. Moved soundly. Carrying a little extra weight today which affected his outline. OD (4,2) 1 Hobson’s Partridgdale Flynn. There is no denying this dog’s masculinity. A terrier through and through. Scoring here with his super front which translated on the move and a very balanced profile. In peak, hard condition lacking in many today. He possesses a beautiful wedge shaped head with the neatest of ears, set on well. Lovely small dark eyes with a bright, keen expression. His well arched, muscular neck flows into a good shoulder and strong topline with rise over the loin. Good set on of tail. He stood on strong, straight forequarters, strong, flexible pasterns and the neatest of feet. He was up on his toes without being overdone and with no hint of weakness. His hindquarters were moderately angulated and well muscled to drive him round the ring ultimately out-moving the bitch in the challenge for BOB. Super coat of correct texture and and a good pelt. On top form and absolutely at one with his handler. Delighted to award him the DCC and BOB 2 Casson’s Ch Mindlen Hendricks at Cassjoebar. Similar remarks apply and a worthy champion. Lovely wedge shaped head with dark eye such a super expression. Neat ears, correctly set. Good reach of neck. Good topline and correct tailset. Super coat and pelt. Balanced angulation fore and aft. Moved soundly. SBD (1,0) 1Aspell and Dixon’s Abysmal on a Mission for Scapegrace. Only a baby and lots of maturing to do but he is a very good size and has strong skull tapering into his strong jaw. Good length of neck. He had a long sloping shoulder coupled with a good return of upperarm. Good hind angulation. Presented a well balanced picture. Lacking in coat today. Moved soundly. PB (7, 1) A nice class of differing types. Some lovely, albeit unsettled babies here which I’m sure will settle with time .1. Deveney’s Liverpool Luck. BP & BSB. Quite the little show-off!
