PARSON RUSSELL JUDGE CRUFTS 24

I was delighted when in June 2021, during the Covid days, I was asked to Judge Crufts in 2024. I was also very happy with my good luck card from Mary Cutler whose dogs I so admired. And I was especially pleased with the wonderful entry (122/133) 4th in the group and including so many from abroad. Many thanks to my stewards Mesdames Gudgin and Thomas, and also to other supportive judges. I had a few problems with with the logistics, especailly when I found out we were starting at 8am, no doubt most of the entrants were equally unimpressed, so many thanks for being there so early. As I no longer show I didn’t know many of the dogs or some of the handlers and I had no preconceptions. It is also tempting to dismiss or favour some dogs when viewed across a large ring but once on the table some of them seem totally different. I would also like to say to everyone, especialy the younger handlers, even if the day didn’t quite go as hoped don’t be downhearted, your breed needs you. A few general comments: Although the dogs looked like PRT’s they did come in all shapes and sizes. There was also a huge variance in colours and coats. Some dogs were very stripped out and that makes me wonder why especially as it’s March and we had snow last week. I have also become resigned to the fact that the rise over the loin is often absent. I also didn’t have many “ribs carried well back”. Are the 2 related I was also surprised to find a couple of dogs with round as opposed to almond shaped eyes. To be more positive most dogs were “bold and friendly” and all but one had very well muscled thighs. I found movement was good overall, which was lovely to see in our big ring, sadly time constaints meant I had to keep it to a minimum. Unfortuanatly that also effected my notes. We did - just- manage to finish on time as we were followed by a large cairn entry, and their BOB only just made the group.

VD (6,1)

1 Broadberrys Ch Mindlen Magnum at Ratscallion: Best Veteran Res DCC. 7 years old and a dog I gave a CC to when he was a puppy. He hasn’t really changed, or aged. Excellent wedge shaped head with classic markings and good pigment.Eyes, ears and teeth were all good. Close harsh coat over reasonable pelt. So well balanced and constructed giving easy ground covering movement.

2 Blair and Hadleys Ch Cleevehill Kasper (Imp Bel): 12 1/2 another I have previously awarded a CC. No secret that I have always loved him, I would just prefer him a tad longer. Classic white dog, not showing his age and enjoying himself, moving out well and covering the ground with ease. Just spanable. In great coat and with good pelt.
3 Smiths Digaden Top Hat and Tails: 9 years.Correctly shaped and very balanced dog. Well shaped masked head with good eye and teeth. In good coat over decent pelt. Moved OK.

PD (5,1)

1 Mansons Vixenview Silent Uh Sass In. BP DCC BOB: Only 11 months. Excellent presention and shown so well and he’s very smart but it was his construction and movement that caught my eye when he came in. And he was even better to go over. The best of fronts, good rib, very spanable, has harsh coat over decent pelt. Uses his neck well when standing and on move. His body shape just flows both under the hands and visually. If I’m being picky I would set his tail a little further back. Has correct attitude and while a great show dog he also looks like a working terrier. He moved beautifully in the group, but then he’d had enough.

2 Lynchs Coppizanna Mr Marvellous: 10 months. Very much a baby and didn’t really catch my eye but he was very good to go over.Excellent coat and pelt. Easy span, nice angluation front and back.

3 Hooleys Forgefox Roll the Dice at Hoolmark: 12months. Not totally settled, tan headed, slightly rangier dog. Excellent reach of neck, in good coat, spannable.

JD (4,1)

1 Beun-Rothuizens Warlord of Lovealoch: 12 months. Really liked him, possibly a little big so just spananble, I ended up placing this class in height order. Shown well and moved OK. Handsome head, good pigment, eyes ears and teeth. Balanced on the stand and when moving.

2 Lagockis Maxfly Universalis: 13 months. Would like a little larger. Showing himself well, has an excellent coat and pelt. Nice head with good neck leading to nice shoulders and front.

3 Balcous Nock River’s Fox-Trot: 17 months. Although older he seemed very much the baby, partly as he needs to be bigger. Lovely outline, in good coat, spanable as you’d expect.

YD (10,2)

1 Biglands Heythrop Tamar: 18 months. Lovely tri headed dog, with rather sad expression. But his head is of a good wedge shape with nice eyes, ears and teeth. Lovely front, good rib and easy span. Well balanced front and rear on table and showed when on the move.

2 Pattyns Lux Ch Suzan’s Pride Valentno JW: 23 months. Bigger dog, and as you’d expect he is well boned, but he still flexible and spanable. Correct rise over loin.

3 O’Conner and Youngs Ir Ch Woodloch Ikenna of Stonemartin Ir Jch: 22 months.

PGD (5)

1 Pattyns Suzan’s Pride Velvety Bird: Nearly 2. White coated, compact but balanced. Spanable. Very good rear end. Nice head, with good eye, ear and teeth. Nice feet. Moved and shown well.

2 Mitchell and Harcourt-Morris’ Lenacourt Lord Joules: 2 years old. Racier type, white with tan head. Narow and spanable body. One of the best coats of the day. Well set on tail.

3 Barremans and Van Der Wildts Up to You Lewis of Lovealoch: nearly 3. Standing I thought he may be my winner but he was a little loose on the move, which is a bit odd as he felt very fit. Good front, rib and tail set. Spanable. Finished with decent pelt and jacket.

LD (12)

1 Hobsons Partridgdale Flynn: 2 years old. Loved him, of good size, he was balanced and showy and well handled. Lovely masculine head with good eyes ears and teeth. Very good in front and nicly angled rear. In good condition. Moved out well demanding his place.

3 Smiths Chadbrook Havoc: 3 years old. Really liked him, happy dog, very bold and friendly. On the bigger side but could span. Big head with nice big teeth. Moved OK.

OD (12,2)

1 Collis’ Ch Riplington See Your Dreams: Nearly 5, and another I have given a CC to. Clasicaly marked tri and what could be considered a proper working type terrier. Lovely expression. Good shoulders with complimemtary rear giving good balance. Moved out really well. Oddly his pelt was better than I remembered.

2 Manson Ir Ch Maxfly Priceless: 4 years old. More compact dog but my notes sat “complete package” Really well balanced and moved out well.Dark eyes, good ears and correct bite. In good coat over thick pelt.

3 Hadleys Lux/Bel/Int Ch Double Barrels Dreams to Reality: Nearly 7. Ideal size and nice shape. Very showy but balanced and moved out well. Unfortunately out of coat but has an excellent pelt.

2 Roberts and Murrays Mindlen Talla Trout: also 8 months.Very typical of this kennel. Lovely head and expression. Good front and shoulder. Seemed a little overwhelmed by the occassion.

PB (7,1)

1 Mansons Foxfur Hell Fire. BPB Res BCC. 11 months old. Compact bitch, typy for this kennel. White, smart but workmanlike. Lovely shape, well angulated front and rear, showed and moved so well. All the parts were so correct from wedge shaped head with good eye shape and pigment, nice ears, and good teeth. Good coat and pelt. Strong neck leading to good shoulders and correct front and rib. Spannable.

PGB (8,1)

1 Beun-Rothuizen Voodoo of Lonealoch: Nearly 2. Really liked this one. Black and white with good pigment and correct wedge shaped head. In good coat over nice pelt. Moved and shown well. Ideally would like a little more rise over loin.

2nd Ottens Very Pretty Abigail of Lovealoch: 2 1/2. Not surprisingly is similar to 1st but slightly smaller all through.

3 Jones’ Chadbrook Enhance The Dance: nearly 5. Argualbly the best neck of the day. Looks deep in the chest but is still spannable. Excellent coat, good bone, moved well, very happy.

LB (13,1)

Probably the hardset classs of the day to judge.

1 Biglands Heythrop Taranna: 2 1/2 years old. So typical of the breed and this kennel. Good wedgeshaped head. Nice ears, eyes and teeth with excellent pigmnet. Quite a variation in types in this class.

1 Nixons Gonetoground I Have a Dream: BCC 5 years old. So feminine but still stronly made. Lovely balance both standing and on the move. Pretty wedge shaped head with well placed ears, good almond shaped eyes, lovely pigment and correct dentition. Harsh coat over good pelt. Alert, as a terrier should be. Well handled to CC.

3 Pattyns Lux/Bel/Int Ch Alma Libra Celins Europeen Ww22: 4 years old. At first glance looks a bit solid but actually not that heavy and is spannable. Lovely arch to neck. Good in head, coat and pelt. \Right attitude. Did weel in such a large class.

GCB (6,3)

1 Andersons Drailam Foxglove: 3 years old. Oldest and it showed in attitude and maturity. Feminine, in good coat over an excellent pelt. Well set tail. Showed well.

2 Krimmels Draytogo Vienna. Repeat. 3 Shields Pacolito Follow The Lead with Shielmarh. 4th in puppy. Smaller, feminine bitch. Still very immature, however very happy. In good rough coat over decent pelt. Nice overall outline.
