PARSON CRUFTS 09 PARSON RUSSELL TERRIER Judge(s): Ms C Samways Parson Russell Terriers While I was very pleased with my winning dogs I was concerned to find some of the old faults still persisting & a few new ones creeping in. The PRT head should be wedge shaped with a moderately broad skull as described in the Standard but I found some heads were exaggerated to the point of coarseness. The Standard calls for a workmanlike & agile terrier not a smart, short coupled terrier with an over long second thigh who would struggle to work effectively below ground. March may be a difficult time of year to present a terrier in good coat but I felt that some exhibitors had not sorted out the ideal time needed to prepare their dog’s coat for show & some coats were blown or too recently prepared & rather sparse. I was pleased to see that the numbers of dogs with an uneconomic short stride were fewer but poor movement is still very much in evidence with plaiting, paddling & a general lack of co-ordination readily seen in particular when the exhibit was coming & going. As required by the Standard the majority of dogs were bold & friendly & perfectly happy to be spanned & handled. There were, however, three dogs who were so fazed it was impossible to assess them. This level of apprehension is a major fault when so many PRTs find their way into a family situation where a good temperament is vital. All terriers were spannable with one exception only. VD (10,2a) 1 Rimmer’s Ch/Ir/Int Kylini Celtic Wizzard, alert, friendly & very fit with no concession to his age, well laid back shoulders, spring of rib & strong & powerful loins, moved well with straight action & drive, sound & workmanlike terrier. CC; 2 Milne’s Ch Glenholm Dylan, old type with lovely head & dark eyes, good substance, straight front & neat well cushioned feet, quality double coat, thick pelt & leathers, moved soundly with drive & carried his years with ease. RCC; 3 Bigland’s Ch Heythrop Toastmaster, well balanced, good coat & pelt, moved well. PD (7) 1 Farrow’s Glenholm Happy Go Lucky, lovely old type with quality wedge shaped head, correct double coat.
