NORWICH JUDGE LEEDS 15

Norwich Terriers

While Norwich Terriers are always delightful to judge for their personalities & character, I was disappointed in the depth of quality.

While most of the entry were well ribbed, cobby & compact, movement on most was disappointing & I realise that getting low to ground dogs with freedom of action is a real challenge. Where there is very short coupling it is hard for the dog to get its hocks underneath & drive & that proved the case in many here.

There were some very good heads of correct proportions & only one mouth which could have been better.

The preface paragraph of every Kennel Club Standard – a relatively new addition, but one which I think is very important, suggests “If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure”. The paragraph was included to warn against exaggeration.

As a non-specialist I am hesitant to be critical, based on a fairly small entry, but my concerns were in my rationale in awarding the green & white cards on the day.

PD

Two litter brothers.

1 Belleville Just For Effect, red, scored in his movement & carriage today. Very short, big ribbed, good head proportions, excellent coat, topline & tail;

2 Belleville Moonlight Effect, b/t, a lot of substance. Very good quarters. I preferred muzzle & ears of 1. A little overawed today.

JD

1 Ragus Hand In Glove, 11 months b/t, lovely puppy, excellent type, great ribs coat & quarters. Good head proportions. His eye is of good size & shape but might be a shade darker. But when he moved he was a delight, powerful drive from the rear & good in front & a firm topline. A stand out for me today. BP, CC & BOB.

PGD

1 Amicaro Whisky Chaser, 20 months, smart dog with a short back & good topline. Could have a little more strength in underjaw & ears could be better set. Good quarters & drive. A little wide in front but he had good reach & went round the ring with spirit & looked the part. For these qualities he won RCC.

OD

1 Ragus Fair And Square, 2 years, scored in head & bone to win this. I would prefer him with better rear action but he has good substance & good coat;

2 Brickin Early Morning, nearly 2 years lighter framed & can mature in body. A little light in bone. Good head proportions. Better rear action than 1. Front action could be better.

PB

1 Ragus Broadway Baby, 9 months, short, well ribbed & with lovely head proportions. Scoring in ears & tailset. Uses her quarters well;

2 Brickin Showpiece, 9 months b/t, a little longer but good ribcage. A little loose on the move. Good eye, ears a little large. I think she could mature into a very good bitch, without exaggeration & has some freedom of action;

3 Brickin Choca Moca.

JB

Close decision & these two ended up taking CC & RCC.

1 Ch Kreatin Hidden Extra, 15 months, very good movement & topline. I would prefer her a shade shorter but scored in front action & earset in a close decision here. Whilst she is not as cobby & compact as some she has a lot of qualities I admired. Presented to look a picture. CC;

2 Ragus Now You’re Talking, 11 months b/t, loved her shortness & rib & head proportions. Ears a little low set. Not as positive in front as 1. Very good rear. RCC.

PGB

1 Amicaro Jubilympia, 3 years, lovely head & beautiful ears & expression. Topline & front action could be better. Uses her quarters well.

LB

1 Ragus My Fair Lady, small, low to ground, 2½ years old, a very typy bitch. Excellent substance, excellent head type. Ears a little wide set. In good coat. Uses her quarters well. Quite good in front. I liked her a lot but gave up in the challenge.

OB

1 Ch Paper Chase at Brickin, very typy bitch. Scored in head, topline & front movement. In very full coat. Could drive better, didn’t really help her handler;

2 Elantiz Primrose Petal, 4 years, very good on the table but rather lost her shape on the move. I preferred head & eye shape & colour of 1. She has sufficient length of leg to give her freedom of action;

3 Redash The Merry Widow.
