NORFOLK JUDGE THREE COUNTIES 12

Norfolk Terriers

I was looking forward to this appointment with apprehension. It’s always daunting giving CCs in a breed for the first time & the Norfolk breed is blessed with so many talented breeders, so having a strong opinion is not my place. However, having lived with the breed for many years & seen changes, there are several observations on the entry here that I want to share.

Mouths still remain a concern & still need attention. Fronts were a nightmare & this has to be looked at closely; forward shoulders, short upper arms & several anomalies causing loose untidy action coming were abundant.

Odd classes were any variety Norfolk for make & shape, the Standard is easy to interpret: small, low, compact & short in back. There are many who were big with short legs & long backs. Please consider that length to body comes from a good front & correct quarters, not in the midline where a Norfolk should be short & well ribbed with depth of the flanks, this with the correct neck & tailset makes this low, compact, sturdy terrier have such appeal.

Movement was not ideal; a hard concrete floor reveals much. Besides fronts, side gaits were not ideal. Movement should be low & driving, not short stepping with back legs swinging from side to side which looks ungainly & is not correct.

Temperaments were good & so were coats.

Please take my observations in the spirit I mean them as I have a deep interest in the Norfolk & Norwich & there is nothing more exciting than a class full of quality Norfolks.

I was very pleased with my four principal winners. Battling it out for BOB were half brother & sister, both sired by Ch Belville Blacklace, incidentally, my BOB last time I judged at Blackpool.

Pipping the bitch puppy to BOB was the lovely young male, Ch Belleville Burning Passion. Certainly not at his mature best & still needs to body up & fill out, however he is very correct. Type, temperament, movement – that is often my order of priority & this guy has it. Really lovely head, masculine enough, good muzzle to skull proportions, decent stop, lovely dark rimmed eyes of the correct size, shape & colour giving that super keen expression, excellent to go over on the table, correct for size, super in backline, ideal front & rear. On the floor he is a joy with an outgoing temperament & rearing to go, he is quite a handful at times for his handler. Totally sound in all directions, low driving side gait which is so typical, absolutely accurate coming & going, movement is his forte & the icing on the cake. Maturity should suit him well. CC & BOB.

Winning the RCC was Roxway Direct Line, another male who was ideal for size & excellent for make & shape. He certainly looked the part here, immaculately presented, alert & attentive to his handler, in full bloom & body, ideal weight, very well muscled. Credit to his owner for such lovely condition. This dog has an excellent bite, large strong teeth in a complete scissor bite which is not seen in abundance these days. Very satisfying to go over, moderate through & through, used himself well, went really well behind. Just preferred the head & front of winner. A worthy champion, of that there is no doubt. Very unlucky to meet dog CC & had to settle for RCC.

Topping the bitches was the very gassy puppy, Belleville Honey Nut Crunch. ‘Star quality’ is what my notes say, excellent make & shape, so full of self assurance, head is good for her age, scored really heavily on the hands on inspection, so correct to go over, ideal neck & shoulder, excellent croup & set to tail which showed when she moved, totally sound with great carriage particularly in hind action & side gait. Must have an excellent future. Had to win the CC on such form, also BP.

Hot on her heels was the very typy Open bitch, Villasa All Gold. Correct for size & balanced in outlook, rock steady performance & expertly handled to enhance her virtues. Very good head proportions, good expression, correct for general outline, scores in neck & shoulders. I would like her better let down behind, could not match the gassy youngster in hind action & had to settle for RCC.

PD (4)

1 Fontanesi Golden Chalice, quality puppy with a good head & eye, very well bodied. Tailset is a touch low, but carries it so well. Sound & tidy coming & going where he scored heavily over

2. This puppy shows so much promise;

3 Kreatin He’s No Angel, very necky b/t who stands on top of himself. Head is really good & very neat in outline. Would prefer a smaller ear. Scored in side gait, unfortunately his front movement let him down. Very typy dog.

JD (2)

1 Javidel May Just Have To, very smart shape, head is OK but would prefer a more masculine outlook & a touch more length to muzzle. Excellent outline & very typical stood. Very active performer, just a little restricted in front;

2 Settrenda Sirens Sounding, not the mouth or eye of 1 & lacking coat which made him very leggy, needs to firm up on the move.

PGD (3)

1 Ruby Rueben, scored heavily on his make & shape, good for size & proportions which won him this class, very active mover;

2 Umbrage Ironstone, stronger headed than 1, but much bigger & longer than I prefer. Very good side gait.

LD (6)

1 Penmire Makori at Strathinver, very good type, strong & substantial, very good head, lots of bone & substance giving a very masculine outlook, correct make & shape, excellent side gait, very good going away which won him this class;

2 Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop, excellent head type where he scored heavily, looks a picture stood, his wonderful head must be admired, excellent bite & eye, excellent behind. Sadly his front let him down here.

OD (4)

1 Ch Belleville Burning Passion. CC & BOB;

2 Roxway Direct Line. RCC.

PB (9)

1 Belleville Honey Nut Crunch. CC & BP;

2 Blakens Starlight Xpress, lovely puppy presented to perfection, scored heavily on outline. Head is not as mature as 1, but very pretty. Showed & moved so well, totally sound all ends with lots of substance & body. Lots & lots to like, has the stamp of quality.

JB 2)

1 Vichea Easter Lily, this young bitch has a lovely outline, very good for size. Head needs to mature & fill some more. Really liked her good overall shape, moved OK.

PGB (3)

1 Tegwani Crystal Ball, more mature in body & finish than 2, very correct for size, carrying body & substance, put down to perfection, cobby & short in outlook, moves out with accuracy & confidence. Shortlisted her for further consideration for the big cards, but preferred the head detail on the eventual winners. Very nice bitch;

2 Brickin Hop and Skip, necky stylish bitch who was out of coat & not carrying body which made her look longer & leggier. Very good make & shape & very good in hind action. Maturity will suit her well.

LB (3)

1 Vichea Dot And Carry, scored for type & general outlook, strong boned & bodied, low to ground, confident on the move, coat was in between which did not give her the best finish for further consideration. Lots of breed points that make this bitch an excellent example;

2 Watercroft Hot Love, nice & compact, but a little too much skirt in her trim. Could not match the front assembly or overall type of 1.

OB (3)

1 Vilassa All Gold. RCC;

2 Brickin Party Time, too heavy a coat which makes this strong framed & bodied bitch look even heavier & almost masculine. Head is really good, just a touch full in eye for me. Even though movement was good, it was really erratic here.
