NORFOLK JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 19
A lovely quality entry, I had quite a few challenging decisions to make, splitting hairs between winners. Overall, I thought type & size was fairly even but totally sound construction a rarity. Teeth were generally good with no poor bites to be concerned about. Short stuffy necks & steep shoulders are still rather common & thus there were quite a few whose front legs paddled about wasting energy & flapping their feet rather than striding efficiently forward. Hind quarters were generally good with strong rear drive, but the poor fronts couldn’t cope & movement became uncoordinated. All had nice happy temperaments though some were typically stubborn & tried the patience of their handlers! I was delighted with my top winners & the b/t pair made a delightful picture (I wish I had a photo!) in BOB competition, both in outstanding coat & condition, moving perfectly around the ring, either would have been a good representative in the BIS group. I was very happy to see my very sound & stylish BP win reserve RBPIS, he moved & showed perfectly in the big ring.
SBD/B (4-1) –
an extremely challenging class to begin with! May I make a plea to Ch shows not to schedule mixed sex breed classes & to put SB classes after OD.
1st: HADFIELD’s Belleville Born To Be Free; 12mths red dog of very good type & soundly constructed especially in hindquarters with good angulation & drive. Head of correct shape & proportions, bright eyed alert expression. Good bone; ok in front, neck & shoulders; level topline, deep well ribbed body & short enough in back. His good breed type & better movement won him the class & he looked the part – a most attractive, promising youngster, presented & handled very well.
2nd: MACARTNEY’s Nordalset Little Bit Of Sun For Ivrig; mature 6½ yr old b/t bitch showing happily & steadily. Head quite balanced though could be stronger throughout it is of correct length proportions of muzzle to skull with enough stop. Ok in forequarter construction though a bit more neck & better shoulder placement needed for improved stride. Excellent hindquarters giving good drive but movement a bit unbalanced between front & rear. Well made body with good ribs & topline, but could be shorter in back. Experience & steadiness gained her place over baby pup!
3rd: SIMPSON’s Brickin Wish Me Luck At Megalex; 8mths red dog, happy little soul who gained in confidence & showmanship over time. Neat movement, quite well balanced & proportioned throughout but has loads of developing & maturing to do, very typical of his age. Head shows promise being of quite good proportions. Very good coat.
MPD (3 -0) 3 promising babies!
1st: JENKINS’ Kinsridge Culture Club; 6 months with best overall breed type which together with more coordinated movement won him the class. Excellent head of good proportions & alert expression. Could do with a bit more neck & shoulder layback, needs to strengthen in front but has good bone. Short level back with good body proportions & ribcage length for age. Hindquarter correct with well bent stifles & good drive. Good quality coat just coming through.
2nd: SMITH’s Javidel Mayde To Order; also 6 months in slightly more coat than 1 but less overall balance. Finer head, lacking in stop but of correct length proportions. Similar faults in front construction, & less bone. Short level back & good length of ribs. Well angulated hindquarters & low set hocks. Needs to strengthen in both front & rear movement, but very much a baby & likely to improve as he matures.
3rd: B. Wish Me Luck At M.
PD (4 -0)
A very different class – what a difference 4-5 months can make! 4 lovely chaps raring to go though number 4 dug his toes in!
1st: THOMPSON-MORGAN’s Belleville Just A Minute; 10½ months super stylish red showman pushing the top winners hard! Won on total balance, collected movement & size. Very good head, broad skull of correct length proportions to strong muzzle. Ok in neck & shoulders, straight front with firm bone. Short level back, good length & depth of ribs. Strong well bent stifles & low hocks, good driving action coordinating well with front strides. Presented in excellent coat & condition & has a great tail! BP & RBPIS
2nd: STEVENSON’s Capps Smart Excuse By Brickin; another of good quality & same age but bigger looking, he has a better length of neck, & shoulder layback the best in the class. However his overall performance let him down being less settled & coordinated in movement. Excellent head shape & proportions with good strong muzzle. Very good bone & substance, deep well ribbed body & short level back, coat of good texture. A very close decision.
3rd: GEE’s Watercroft To Coin A Phrase; 9½ months & less advanced in development as yet. Presented in excellent coat of good texture. Not as good in front as above but hindquarters well constructed though need to strengthen but this will come with maturity. Good type puppy head of correct length proportions, but not as strong as above. Showed happily, full of promise & will settle in moving with practice.
JD (5- 0)
Another nice class, good quality dogs of different types & sizes, some difficult decisions especially between 1 & 2
1st: ATKINSON’s Moortop My Mark Again; very pleasing 17 months of correct size, excellent type, soundly constructed & presented in very good coat & condition, he shows himself off on his toes all the time & moved tidily with good front stride & rear drive. Head fits the standard, broad skull & good strong muzzle; quite good shoulders & better length of neck than the others; ok in front with good bone; short back, compact deep body & good length ribcage; well bent strong hindlegs & low hocks, Appealed to me a lot & definitely of CC quality.
2nd: THOMPSON-MORGAN’s Belleville Crumble Topping; very attractive 16 months of lovely type though a size larger & not quite so well put together or balanced as winner. Very good head with nice broad shape skull & muzzle of correct length proportions & typical alert expression. Firmer in front legs with good bone, but not quite such good neck & shoulders, otherwise very close. Eyecatching showman perfectly presented, moved with good rear drive from very well constructed hindquarters but a bit unsteady & uncoordinated with front action until he settled down a bit. Quality dog full of promise.
3rd: PHILIP’s Nordalset Festivities – 15½ months of similar size & type to 1st , neat compact & well proportioned throughout with good sound construction. Typical head of good proportions though has some maturing to do, alert expression from small bright eyes. Movement good in rear but front not quite such good stride as above or as balanced overall. Very appealing & promising little chap, happy showman.

1st: B. Born To Be Free
PGD (3 -1)
Very tricky as I preferred 2 but was just not cooperating!
1st: MCPHEE’s Kinsridge No Problem At Foxhouse; Rather large but soundly constructed 2 year old red, very stylish & moved soundly & freely with good coordination between front & rear. Beautiful head, nice broad curved skull & shorter muzzle, but would prefer darker eyes. Quite well boned front legs though could be firmer in feet. Level topline & good deep body though could be a bit longer in ribs. Super strong hindquarters well bent & muscled stifles & low set hocks driving him along. Presented in excellent coat & condition.
2nd: NEWTON’s Strathinver Star Of Fortune; similar age light red lovely size & type, well constructed throughout, very pleasing to go over. Super head of correct shape & muzzle in proportion, most attractive expression from small dark eyes. Good bone, straight front & quite good in neck & shoulders. Short back, deep body & better length ribcage. Nice strong well angulated hindquarters. Overall looks very neat compact, but impossible to assess movement as refused to cooperate at all! This plus his much less well groomed coat lost him the class.
LD (6 -1)
Excellent class!
1st: KARVO & SEILOO’s Blakens Look The Part; very aptly named super attractive b/t just over 2 years old really ready in top class coat, condition & presentation. As soon as I saw him, I’m afraid that none of the other males stood a chance, excellent though several of them are! Gorgeous head & expressiom fits the standard description perfectly; better length neck than most & shoulders correctly laid back. Firm straight front legs striding out well in prefect unison with strong driving well angulated hindquarters propelling him soundly round the ring keeping a level topline. Short back, deep long ribcage, nice cobby body. Very stylish showman of correct size, type & balance, completed with a perfectly carried tail! CC & BOB
2nd:THOMPSON-MORGAN’s Belleville Major Key; 17months red a shade bigger but very very nice quality & type. Excellent head, broad curved skull, good stop, strong muzzle of correct length proportion skull. Not quite so good in neck & shoulders as 1 but good straight front legs; short back & deep cobby body, compact overall shape. Equally good hindquarters as 1 & very balanced mover once he had settled. In top quality harsh coat presentation in super condition. Pushed the winner hard but I followed my heart! Easily won RCC over his opposition.
3rd: HESS & HIGGINS’ Umbrage Copacabana; very nice quality little dog, short & compact, soundly constructed. Good head of correct shape & proportions. Nice cobby well ribbed body completed with well carried tail! Not quite so firm or well boned in front as above but looked good in the line up moving sound & true. Pushed hard by 4th place but was overall more balanced & coordinated on the move.
OD (2 -0)
Good quality pair – preferred head, eyes & expression of 1st & appeared more balanced.
1st: GEE’s Ch Watercroft Calling Time; eyecatching mature 2 year old of excellent type & size. Very appealing head, broad skull, good stop, strong muzzle of correct length in proportion to skull. Not quite as good in neck & shoulders as top winners, lovely strong bone but front could be firmer. Short level back, deep body. Well angulated stifles & low set hocks giving good drive, looking good in profile.
2nd: HURRION & STANDEN’s Villassa Jack Be Quick; showy dog in good coat & condition, neat & compact, shade smaller than above. Head of good strength in skull & shorter muzzle, but not such a typical expression as eyes could be more oval & smaller though they’re very dark. Lacks length of neck & shoulder lay back, ok in front legs though could be bit firmer. Short level back, deep body with good length ribcage; quite well bent hind legs & good rear drive, but movement a bit uncoordinated.
VD/B (2-1)
1st: HURRION’s Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble; I’ve always loved this happy little showgirl & have judged her a few times including awarding RCC as a youngster & her 2nd CC! Never seems to fail to perform with enthusiasm & joy & still has perfect teeth despite the one lost as a youngster in ‘fair wear & tear’! 11 years old, eyecatching & stylish of very good breed type, moving exceedingly well with reach & drive, front & rear in perfect unison, & balance, unlike many of the entry today. Correctly proportioned head sweet expression, small dark eyes of correct shape. Quite good angulations front & rear with enough bone for size. Short & cobby with good length ribs. Eyecatching lovely girl who knows exactly what to do! BV. What a shame there was no Veteran group competition.
MPB (2 -1)
1st: SMITH’s Javidel Mayde To Measure; 6 months dark red & very much a baby with lots of developing to do but in good coat & shows promise for age. Pretty little head of totally correct proportions & sweet expression from small dark eyes. Needs a bit more angulation front & rear, front legs need to firm & could do with a bit more bone. Level topline & natural dock. Showed & moved very well, bright alert & happy!
PB (4 -0)
4 very nice quality pups of 9½ -10½ months, full of promise
1st: THOMPSON-MORGAN’s Belleville Just So; beautifully balanced 10½ litter sister to BP. Soundly constructed front & rear with correct angulations in shoulders & stifles producing free flowing movement, a pleasure to watch. Head correct for age, nicely shaped skull, deep stop & proportionately shorter muzzle of good strength. Large deep ribcage with enough length, short level back. Eye catching youngster with excellent bone & bright dark eyed expression.
2nd: TATE’s Jaeva Peppermint TAF; very striking b/t showgirl in excellent coat & condition, movement soundly coordinated between front & rear with good reach & drive. Head a bit different to above, needs more time to mature in skull but good stop & muzzle of correct length & strength, eyes & expression not quite so appealing as 1. Ok in neck & shoulders & nice straight front legs with good bone. Short back, level topline, nice tail! Well bent hindlegs with low set hocks giving correct sound action. I liked her a lot but winner more ready & is more cobby & compact.
3rd: GEE’s Watercroft Coin Of The Relm; very close up decision, attractive pup with lots to like but more development still to do. Excellent overall breed type, short & compact, but not quite as well constructed in front as above, Nicely angulated hindquarters & neat tidy mover, quite well balanced, though not as much stride as winners. Immature head of good proportions & shape, happy little showgirl.
JB (3 -0)
Three lovely juniors very hard to choose between, each at a different stage of development.
1st: PHILLIPS’ Just The One At Blakens TAF; 14 months, smartest looking, showed & moved with neat, tidy coordination, keeping a good topline. Nice head of good length proportions of muzzle to skull & good stop, has some maturing to do but sweet expression. Well made in front, straight legs, good shoulder layback with forward stride that coped well with the excellently angulated hindquarters & drive. Short back, firm compact cobby body with deep enough ribcage. Good texture coat & immaculate presentation.
2nd: STEVENSON’s Brickin Devine Tilly; 17 months b/t whom I really liked & excelled everywhere, just losing out on coat presentation today – tough decision I’m afraid! She is lovely to go over, having the correct length neck & layback of shoulders, nice straight well boned front legs, short level back, deep long ribcage, well bent & muscled hindlegs, moved with good reach & drive looking well balanced.
3rd: HURRION’s Villassa All About Me; 15 months & lots to like about her very close up to above two. Pretty little girl, really short & showy, moved with good stride fore & aft. Front construction quite good though would prefer a shade more neck, good body for age & level topline. A little bit finer overall & in bone than above. Head of good proportions, dark eyes but not quite such correct oval shape.
NB (1 -0)
1st: HESS & HIGGINS’ Umbrage Up All Night; very nice type though appears a shade long overall. Typical expression from small dark eyes, head is quite well shaped & proportioned. Presented in excellent coat & showed well though was distracted on the move & thus a bit erratic & less well coordinated. Quite good front angulation & neck, with good bone & straight legs. In profile she looked more balanced with enough front stride & very good rear drive from well bent hindlegs. Firm body & ribs, level topline completed with excellent tail carriage!
PGB (3 -0)
Very tricky class to judge, lacking merit
1st: DARNELL’s Jacquidon Rags To Riches; presented in very good coat & condition, showed & moved well, better coordination & balance won her first place. Correct head of good proportions, broad enough curved skull, deep stop & shorter strong muzzle, typical expression. Slightly better neck & shoulders than others, front legs ok though needs more bone & feet could be firmer. Short level topline & deep cobby body with good length ribs, excellent hindquarters with good angulation. Quite attractive & typical overall.
2nd: PHILIP’s Nordalset Warm And Fuzzy; difficult to split 2 & 3 as in some ways I preferred the other but this one is more balanced & ‘together’ overall. Shorter, more compact & typey, but needs more neck & shoulders are rather steep. Deep cobby body, good rib length. Neat head of good proportions, nice small dark eye, typical expression. Strong well bent stifles & low set hocks, moved quite well with good drive, but some incoordination between front & rear. Presented in thick coat of good texture, attractive showy little character!
3rd: MACARTNEY’s Ivrig First Bit Of Joy; a bit bigger & more bone with nice head stronger than above, pleasing expression. A bit unbalanced overall & rather sloppy, & tendency to roll on the move. Similar front construction to 2nd but has a bit more neck. Nice body with good ribs, but could be a bit shorter in back. Movement not as good as 1&2 but happy temperament & willing showgirl with correct texture coat.
LB (6 -1)
Mixed quality class, 1st was an easy & outstanding winner!
1st: THOMPSON-MORGAN’s Belleville In The Black; super b/t of most stroking appearance, I completely fell for her! – she’s so sound & typical. Very pleasing head that fits the standard, broad curved skull, deep stop & shortish strong muzzle all in proportion, dark eyes which for perfection could be a bit more oval in shape. Front legs straight & well boned, better length neck than most & shoulders quite well laid back. Short back, deep body with good length ribcage, very well angulated stifles & low set hocks giving good driving action, moving beautifully with good balance between front & rear, covering the ground well & keeping a good level topline. Presented in excellent condition with shining coat of correct texture. Lovely quality bitch, delighted to award her the
CC.
2nd: BRACKNER’s Brupurhat Wedding Crasher; very eyecatching attractive showgirl, in good texture coat & presentation. Good head of correct shape & proportions, very typical expression; decent length of neck & ok in shoulders & front but less bone than winner. Level topline, good depth & length of ribs, nicely angulated hindquarters & low set hocks. Good driving action in profile but from the rear a bit untidy, not quite in balance with front action.
3rd: HURRION’s Villassa Cherry Stars; pretty little girl, bit finer throughout than winners & coat not quite so good. Well balanced, sound & typical with attractive head & expression. Fairly well made in front construction & nicely angulated hindquarters, moved soundly covering the ground well keeping a level topline. Short back & well ribbed body.
OB (3 -0)
Very close hair splitting decision between 1 & 2 – they’re very similar in many ways!
1st: GEE’s Ch Watercroft Pink Fizz; extremely typical cobby show girl who knows she’s a star & has some inner charisma & twinkle in her eyes which stole her the class from 2nd placed & pushed the CC winner very hard! Beautiful head with broad skull, deep stop & shortish muzzle, lovely expression from small dark oval shaped eyes. Enough neck length & shoulder layback to stride out well in front. Short level back, good depth & length of ribs, well muscled & angulated hindlegs with low hocks; firm driving action following forelegs with good coordination. Presented in perfect coat & condition. RCC
2nd: PHILLIPS’ Ch Blakens Look No Further; another little beauty of equally outstanding merit! Gorgeous head & expression, dark eyes though would prefer a bit more oval shaped; broad skull with deep stop, perhaps a shade short in muzzle but it has enough depth. Good neck & better shoulders than above, nice straight front legs though has a touch less bone. Short back & cobby body with good ribs. Excellent hindquarters, free driving movement & striding out well in front. Super coat quality & condition, sparkling showgirl. I agonised over which f these two to place first & could have stood there all day changing them around – I wished I had more certificates to award!
3rd: DARNELL’s Jacquidon Nip And Tuck; sweet little b/t, very sound & moving well. A bit finer boned than winners & rather outshone today by their star quality, but she is of good breed type. Nicely shaped & balanced head, alert bright expression. Quite well made front & rear giving good stride & drive, sound & true, showed well.
