Norfolk Terrier Club of Great Britain Spring Open Show – Critique
My grateful thanks to the Norfolk Terrier Club of Great Britain for inviting me to officiate at their Spring Open Show. This well run Club put on a super show and the officers and committee are to be congratulated for their efforts. I was thrilled with the entry of 63 dogs and in addition to being numerically strong, the entry was full of quality which bodes well for the breed. Puppies were out in abundance and these classes were particularly exciting to judge with several promising youngsters present on the day. Applause for all class winners was good to hear, and I’m sure greatly appreciated by the winners themselves.
Minor Puppy Dog (2,1)
1. Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Call of Duty. This black & tan youngster is such an exciting prospect. At his first show and a tad reluctant on the move but he gradually improved as his time in the ring went on. He appealed for type and presented a super outline with moderate length of neck, level topline, rib developing nicely, short loin and good tail for both set and carriage. Correctly proportioned head with nice width between the ears, dark expressive eye and good dentition. Jacket of excellent texture and very well presented. When he got going he moved true with excellent side gait and carriage. Given a little more time he should do great things.
Puppy Dog (4,0).
Very nice class, the first three greatly appealed and should all have promising futures ahead
1. Gee’s Watercroft Chilli Pepper. 12 mth who was the most mature in the class but also full of quality. He excels for type and is a beautifully balanced boy with neck of moderate length, firm level topline, excellent rib, short loin and good tail set. Super front assembly with well laid shoulders, standing nice and straight in front and with round compact feet. Well muscled rear with good turn of stifle. Attractive head and expression with dark, oval-shaped eyes, excellent ears and correct dentition. Hard, wiry coat and shown in first class order. Moving soundly when viewed from any angle with particularly impressive profile action and using himself to advantage at all times. Best Puppy in Show.
2. Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Spell It Out. Another quality pup but not quite as co-operative with handler as the winner. He also appealed for type and is so well balanced. Moderate length of neck, level topline and tail set on correctly. Pleasing head of correct proportions with excellent eye and ear. He is soundly constructed throughout and stands nice and straight in front, well-muscled hindquarters with good turn of stifle. Excellent coat and presentation. Moving true and with purpose with excellent drive from the rear.
3. Jenkins’ Kinsridge Cash Flow
Junior Dog (4,1)
1. Britten’s Krisma Dark N’Stormy. What a character this black and tan boy is! As well as attitude, he is also full of quality. Compact and of excellent type, carrying nice bone and substance. Moderate length of neck, firm straight topline, excellent ribbing, strong loin and tail set on correctly. Quality headpiece with good width between the ears, correct skull to muzzle proportions, dark oval-shaped eye and excellent ears. Hard wiry coat and excellent presentation. Well made throughout with well-laid shoulders, nice straight forelegs, well-muscled rear with nice turn of stifle. Sound, free action with exceptional side gait and carriage.
2. Atkinson’s Charlie Blake at Moortop. Red of completely different type to the winner and with more ‘scope’. He still pleased and has lots of qualities. Strong neck of good length, level topline, pleasing rib and tail set on correctly and of excellent carriage. Attractive head of correct proportions with nice dark eye, strong wedge-shaped muzzle and scissor bite. Well presented with jacket of good texture. He moved well in profile with nice self carriage, has firm driving action behind but front movement could not match that of winner
3. Serrell’s Harlyqinpark Redrobin
Novice Dog (3,2)
1. West’s Kinsridge Sky of the West. 6 yr red dog with a super temperament. Balanced boy with a neck of moderate length, pleasing rib and good tail set. Nice breadth of skull, good eye for colour but a little prominent. Correct dentition. Hard, wiry jacket. Topline could be firmer to advantage. Moving well when viewed in profile with good self carriage, moving true behind but could be better in front both standing and on the move. Well handled.
Post Graduate Dog (3,0)
1. Morgan-Thompson’s Belleville Slipstream. Quality 15 mth who won this class with ease. He is a super type and presented a beautifully balanced outline with neck of medium length, short back, firm level topline, strong loin and the best of tails. Attractive, well-proportioned head with good width between the ears, dark brown oval-shaped eyes, excellent ears and first class dentition. He is so well constructed that he cannot stand wrong and he came into his own on the move, using himself fully at all times. Hard, wiry coat and so well presented. He is still to mature fully but in the challenge he could not be overlooked and was a well deserved Best Dog here today.
2. Atkinson’s Moortop Marks Delivery. Red who appealed for his overall type and balance. Another who is nice and compact with moderate length of neck, correct topline, pleasing spring of rib and short loin. Quality head and expression with correct skull to muzzle proportions, well-defined stop and nice strength to muzzle. Dark brown eyes of correct shape and good ears. He stands a tad wider in front than I would like and this is reflected in his action when coming towards. Moving well when viewed from the rear and in profile he moves out with purpose and with good self carriage.
3. Brown’s Dajean Dotty’s Digger
Limit Dog (3,0).
Two very nice black and tans headed this class.
1. Atkinson’s Blakens I Look To You. Compact boy of excellent type who was so good to go over. Super balance with moderate length of neck, firm level topline, good forechest, nice spring of rib, strong loin and excellent tail for set and carriage. Quality head with nice width between the ears, dark expressive eyes and good ears for size and set. Excellent presentation with hard wiry jacket. Such is his construction he just cannot stand wrong and he greatly impressed on the move with his true, purposeful action. Shown to advantage to take Reserve Best Dog and Best Black & Tan Dog.
2. Gee’s Watercroft Coin A Phrase. Another who excelled for type and overall balance. He carries nice bone and substance and super hard, wiry jacket. Nice length of neck, straight topline, nice spring of rib, short loin and tail set on correctly. Attractive, well-proportioned head with well defined stop, strong wedge-shaped muzzle, dark brown eyes of good shape and scissor bite. Well made both front and rear, standing nice and straight in front. He also moves soundly with very good side gait and self carriage.
3. Mounfield’s Arderry Son of a Gun
Veteran Dog (1,0)
1. Waters’ Southpoint Dante’s Inferno. 7 yr old with lots to like. Strong neck of moderate length, firm topline, nice spring of rib and short loin. Nicely proportioned head with nice breadth of skull, strong muzzle and dark brown oval-shaped eyes. On the move, his profile and rear action pleased and he used himself to advantage. His front assembly is not his fortune and this also showed on the move. Super temperament and very well handled.
Special Beginners Dog (3,1)
1. West’s Kinsridge Sky of the West
2. Brown’s Dajean Dotty’s Digger. This boy presented a pretty good outline with moderate length of neck, level topline, nice spring of rib and good tail set. Good width between the ears, nice eye but muzzle a tad longer than desired which affected his expression. Moving well enough when viewed from the side. His front assembly was superior to that of the winner but I felt that 1 was the more typical of the two.
Minor Puppy Bitch (7,3).
I really liked the first two in this class even though they were of completely different type and build to each other.
1. Jenkins’ Kinsridge Hey Ho. 7 month baby who was quite the character. She presented a beautifully balanced and compact outline with medium length of neck, level topline, short back, strong loin and good tail set. Feminine head and expression with correct skull to muzzle proportions, dark oval-shaped eye, wedge-shaped muzzle and correct dentition. She is soundly constructed with nice layback of shoulder, good length of upper arm, standing nice and straight in front and with good feet. Good turn of stifle with well let down hocks. Moving soundly throughout.
2. Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Ovation. 8 month who also appealed; she is higher on the leg than the winner and with more neck but another with a promising future ahead I would think. Attractive headpiece with feminine expression, correctly proportioned with excellent eye and ear, good mouth and nicely furnished. Firm level topline, rib developing nicely, strong loin and tail set on correctly and of good carriage. She is also well made with nice straight forelegs and good turn of stifle. Hard, wiry coat and shown in first class order.
3. Darnell’s Jacquidon No Hesitation
Puppy Bitch (9,2).
A very nice class with some very promising prospects but a variety of different types present.
1. Stevenson’s Brickin Devotion. Super compact girl of excellent type and carrying nice bone and substance. Nicely proportioned head, good width between the ears, well defined stop, strong muzzle and excellent eye and ear; all playing their part to produce a delightful feminine expression. Correct dentition. Medium length of neck, firm topline, nice short back and excellent rib for one so young. Well constructed throughout with well-laid shoulders, straight front, well muscled thighs and good turn of stifle. Moving soundly with good propulsion from the rear. Best Puppy Bitch from a quality entry of young bitches in attendance today.
2. Atkinson’s Moortop Clear Choice. Another quality puppy who appealed for her overall type and balance. She is feminine all through with an attractive, well proportioned head with dark brown oval-shaped eyes, strong wedge-shaped muzzle and very good ears. Super neck, firm level topline, pleasing rib, short loin and tail set on correctly, Excellent coat texture and presentation. Moving so well in profile with excellent self carriage and firm hindquarters with good propulsion. Winner just had the edge in front action.
3. Jenkins’ Kinsridge Club Classic
Junior Bitch (6,2)
1. Phillips’ Blakens Tootie Fruitie. This 16 mth girl did absolutely everything for me on the day! Feminine throughout, she excels for type and balance. Strong neck of medium length, firm level topline, nice spring of rib, short loin and tail spot on for both set and carriage. Stunning head and expression with good width between the ears, dark oval-shaped eyes, strong wedge-shaped muzzle, excellent furnishings and correct dentition. Hard, wiry jacket and faultless presentation. Soundly made both front and rear and one who just cannot stand wrong. To complete the picture she certainly knows how to move and uses herself fully at all times. I had no hesitation in awarding her Best Bitch and Best in Show and shall follow her show career with great interest.
2. Gee’s Watercroft Pop Picker. Another very nice bitch and unlucky to be in the same class as the winner today. She is a typey girl with nice bone and substance and presents a super compact outline. Moderate length of neck, excellent topline, well sprung ribs, strong loin and pleasing tail set. Well proportioned head with excellent width between the ears, well defined stop, strong muzzle and first class eye and ear. Hard wiry coat. Moving soundly all through with particularly strong rear action.
3. Philip’s Nordalset Chase The Storm
Novice Bitch (3,1)
1. Stevenson’s Brickin Full of Pose. Quality black and tan puppy with nice bone who presented a super outline. Strong neck of moderate length, level topline, nice spring of rib for her age, short loin and tail set on correctly. I really liked her head and expression; nice breadth between the ears, strong wedge-shaped muzzle, dark oval-shaped eye and good ears. Correct dentition. Well made both front and rear with well laid shoulders, correct length of upper arm, standing well in front, well developed thighs and nice turn of stifle. Moving soundly all through. Just needs to concentrate a little more as she was easily distracted but she is only a baby and has lots of time on her side. Best Black & Tan Bitch.
2. Graves’ Nicnips Hashtag. This 7 mth old puppy has lots to like but she was rather reluctant to move at times and threw her chances away! She is well off for bone and substance and of a nice type. Moderate length of neck, good topline, pleasing rib and tail set on correctly. I liked her head and expression, having good breadth between the ears, well defined stop, strong wedge-shaped muzzle and good eye and ear. Nice coat texture. Standing nice and straight in front and with nice angles behind. When she decided to go, she moved true.
Undergraduate Bitch (3,1)
1. Gee’s Watercroft Pick of the Pops. This 16 mth girl was the clear winner in this class and what a super young Norfolk she is! Typey girl with excellent bone and substance. Feminine headpiece with exquisite expression; good breadth between the ears, dark oval-shaped eyes, excellent ears for size and set and good dentition. Balanced in outline, she had a nice length of neck, firm straight topline, well sprung ribs, strong loin and tail set on well. First class coat and presentation. She is so good over with nice layback of shoulder and length of upper arm, straight forelegs, compact feet, well muscled hindquarters, good turn of stifle and hocks well let down. Using herself at all times, she sets herself up perfectly and moves true and with purpose. Reserve Best Bitch & Reserve Best in Show.
2. Hess & Higgins’ Umbrage The Gloriana. This 3 year old is a completely different type to the winner, lighter in frame and less compact. She has a nicely proportioned head with enough width to skull, dark eye and feminine expression. Pleasing length of neck, level topline and good tail set. She is a little wider in front than desired and this also shows on the move, however she moves nicely in profile and with good drive from the rear. Hard, wiry jacket.
Post Graduate Bitch (3,1)
1. Saltmarsh’s Pipridges Holly. 2 yr old who won this class on her type and overall balance. Feminine girl with sweet expression; good eye for shape and colour, correct ears and correct skull to muzzle proportions. Nice length of neck, correct topline, pleasing rib, short loin and excellent tail for both set and carriage. She is well made, standing nice and straight in front and with nicely angulated hindquarters. Good quality coat. She could make more of herself on the move but she is sound enough.
2. Hess & Higgins’ Umbrage The Jubilant. 3 yr old who is a bit of a livewire! She is a completely different type to the winner. Pleasing head with good width between the ears, dark expressive eye and strong wedge-shaped muzzle. Moderate length of neck, level topline, nicely sprung ribs and good tail set. She moves well when viewed from the side and the rear but is rather wide in front. Compact feet. Good coat texture.
Limit Bitch (8,4)
1. Darnell’s Jacquidon Next Sensation. 2 yr old black & tan who won this class with ease for me. Compact and feminine, she presented a very nice balanced outline with neck of medium length, short back, level topline and pleasing tail set. Attractive head and expression with broad skull, dark oval-shaped eyes, medium sized ears of correct set and strong wedge-shaped muzzle. Nice layback of shoulder, straight well-boned forelegs, muscular thighs and good turn of stifle. Sound on the move, showing herself to advantage, assisted by her very capable handler.
2. Philip’s Nordalset Sunny Skies. This 2 yr old red is another quality girl but different in type to the winner. Good skull to muzzle proportions, well defined stop and dark eye of correct shape. Nicely balanced and carrying good bone and substance. Strong neck of moderate length, firm level topline, well ribbed, short loin and tail set on correctly. Hard, wiry jacket. Moving well when viewed in profile but she is a tad wide in front both standing and on the move.
3. Devereux’s Vichea Little Gem
Open – Bitch (2,2)
Veteran Bitch (3,0)
1. Atkinson’s Ch Hobsons Choice at Moortop. 12 year old red who is showing signs of her age but her many qualities are still evident. Feminine girl who appealed for type and presented a nicely balanced outline with neck of medium length, level topline, good rib, strong loin and docked tail of correct set. Nicely proportioned head with dark eye, correct ears and keen expression. Well made throughout, she still knows how to move and uses herself fully. Good coat texture. Best Veteran in Show.
2. Smith’s Stridview Bluebell for Javidel. 9 yr old who differed in type to the winner and she is heavier set all through. Pleasing head proportions with excellent eye and strong wedge-shaped muzzle. She has a tendency to fly her ears which spoils her expression somewhat. Carrying nice bone and substance. Good forechest, well sprung ribs and nice short loin. Soundly constructed throughout and another who uses herself on the move. Hard, wiry coat.
3. McGrath-Cole’s Brickin Happy Magic
Brace (2,0)
1. Gee. Well matched brace of excellent type, both soundly constructed with quality coats and shown in first class order. Moving in unison and showing themselves to the max.
2. Saltmarsh. Mother and daughter who are another well matched pair, similar for type, size and colour and moving very well together.
Junior Handling (12 – 16 yrs)
1. Isobel West. The only Junior Handler here today but this young lady is very accomplished and should be proud of her abilities. Handling a 7 yr old dog, who she moved at just the right pace, keeping her eye on him at all times. She was also aware of the judge, changing position when necessary. Well done!
