NORFOLK JUDGE CRUFTS 10

Norfolk Terriers
I enjoyed judging the breed at Crufts. I was encouraged to find fewer mouth faults than the last time I judged. Presentation on the whole was good. Some classes were hard to judge, particularly in the bitches with several nice ones with different attributes & types. As a result I found that I changed my mind about placings several times as some classes progressed. On a different day they could easily swap around.

VD (1)

1 Wilson’s Sheltrice Dash Of Magic, 9 years red, lovely head & eye, great expression, in excellent coat, showed & moved very well for his age.

PD (3)

1 Stevenson’s Penmire Wild Bramble by Brickin, beautiful red dog, lovely head & expression, dark eye, very typical, cobby & low to the ground, in great coat & condition, good angulation & movement, good bone & spring of rib, showed well when he settled. He nearly threw it away by playing up in the BOB challenge however he pulled it together just in time. I found him hard to fault. CC, BOB & BP;

2 Jenkins’ Kinsridge Top Gun, another very nice puppy, unlucky to meet 1. Not the bone & movement of 1 but he is shorter in the back. Really great head, tail well carried, in lovely coat;

3 Hess & Higgins’ Umbrage Ironstone, quality puppy, not the head or movement of 1 & 2. Lovely eye, great bite, nice tail carriage.

JD (1)

1 Smith’s Javidel Come What May, fabulous temperament, good type, nice head & eye, good ear carriage, very well presented in good coat, good spring of rib. Prefer more neck & angulation.

PGD (5)

1 Rayner’s Mstease Making Mayhem, very attractive b/t, nice head, good length of neck, best mover in the class, well balanced, short back, good bone. Just prefer more spring of rib. Showed very well;

2 Lang’s Nelson Vom Wambolder Sand, red with a very harsh coat making him look a little plain. Nice head, good bite, excellent showman, short & well balanced. Just preferred shorter hocks of 1;

3 Hamar’s Lagdenfarm Bit Of A Lad, another b/t, not showing as well as 1 & 2. Good head, moved OK.

LD (7,1a)

1 Lloyd’s Orison Bootlace, very nice showy b/t, sound mover, best mover in the class, lovely head & bone, short back;

2 Fraser’s Jaeva Midas Touch at Saltarello, quality red, cobbier than 1 but not the neck & shoulder. Very short & low to the ground, attractive head;

3 Phillips & Tate’s Jaeva Pocket Rocket, another quality low to the ground b/t of good type, good bone & spring of rib, good head & expression. Not the shoulder of 1 & not showing his best.

OD (7,3)

1 Mitchell’s Roxway Direct Line, difficult decision in this class with lots to like about all the dogs. The winner is a very short well balanced dog, showing very well, correct size, moved well with enthusiasm, well presented in excellent coat. RCC, lost out to the CC winner on head & drive when moving;

2 Jenkins’ Ch Kinsridge Top Dollar, quality red I have often admired, lovely head, good bone & substance. Shorter muzzle & more mature than 1 but not showing well & coat not at its best. Preferred short back, attitude & size of 1;

3 O Bootlace.

GCD(2)

1 Owens’ Hoathnor Jackanory, unfortunately I don’t seem to have any notes on this class however from memory he is a short red dog who showed & moved well for his handler;

2 Benney’s Wharfvalley Chianti, well put down red, just longer cast than 1.

VB (3)

1 Hess & Higgins’ Tomomayo Tiger Bright at Umbrage, 10 year old who looks 5, excellent coat & condition, moved soundly, nice bone, enjoying her day out;

2 Benney’s Riannor Melting Moment, clipped but loving her day out. Level topline, very attentive to her handler, moved well;

3 McGrath-Cole’s Hoathmor Merrytilda, short & cobby 12 year old, in great coat, nice head.

PB (6)

This was a difficult class with several with lots to like about them. I changed my mind a couple of times as the class went on.

1 Phillips & Tate’s Jaeva Hells Fury, initially I had this young b/t further down the line but as the class progressed she became more confident, by the end she was moving the most freely & showing herself off to advantage. Quality well balanced bitch, nice head, good neck & shoulder. Just needs to mature & drop in body. She was giving away 3 months against the others in the class;

2 Mitchell’s Richell Show Off, mature quality red, not the head or neck of 1 but more bodied although longer cast. Good bone, nice front, moved well, in excellent coat, well carried tail, showed very well;

3 Devereux’s Vichea Dot And Carry, another very nice quality puppy with a good head. Not the movement of 1 or 2 & longer cast than 1. In lovely coat, showing well.

JB (8,2)

Another difficult class where I changed my mind a couple of times through the class.

1 Cooper’s Settrenda Saucy Sox, well made quality bitch, great spring of rib, short back, nice head & sound movement, showed very well. Just needs to mature;

2 Phillips’ Blakens Party Popper, more mature than 1 but not moving as soundly in front & longer cast. Very well presented, showed well, good tail carriage;

3 Gee’s Watercroft Mayfair Lady, at the beginning of the class I thought she was my winner but she just didn’t pull it together at the end & looked shorter in neck than 1 & 2. Lovely to go over, quality bitch, nice bone, good head & sound construction.

PGB (9,4)

1 Simpson’s Megalex Elusive Dream, very free mover, nice head, showed well, good spring of rib & bone. Just needs the coat presentation;

2 Smith’s Hatchwoods Smokescreen, shorter than 1 but not the movement or attitude. Very cobby, nice head & expression;

3 Howard’s Hatchwoods Flamenco, longer than 1 & 2 & not the front. Very nice head & well carried tail.

LB (7,1)

1 Stevenson’s Brickin Skip Away, really lovely typy quality bitch, great head, eye & expression, very showy, best mover in the class, good bone & spring of rib, nicely balanced. Pushed very hard for CC & RCC;

2 Phillips & Fraser’s Jaeva Smart Cookie, nice type, quality bitch. Shorter than 1 but not the bone & substance. Very attractive head;

3 Horne’s Golden Breeze, short cobby bitch, nice head. Preferred the hindquarters of 1 & 2.

OB (11,1)

This was a difficult class. The first 4 changed positions several times during the class. I wish I had several CCs to hand out.

1 Jones & Phillips’ Jaeva Bag Of Tricks, beautiful type, very cobby, well balanced, low to the ground with good bone, lovely head & expression, moved well in front. CC;

2 Phillips’ Ch Vichea Pick And Mix, not the type of 1 being longer cast & not quite the head. However she is a quality b/t bitch who excels in movement, good bone & spring of rib, correct angulation. RCC;

3 Hurrion’s Valentines Cherry Crumble, thought she was my winner at the beginning of the class, however just not the head of 1 or movement of 2. Showed very well in excellent coat, moved well in profile. Unlucky to meet 1 & 2, was really splitting hairs over these placings. GCB (4) 1 H Smokescreen;

2 Ruffles’ Ruffnor Secret Wish, free moving bitch, in excellent coat. Just longer cast than 1;

3 H Flamenco.
