Midland Counties 16 Judge

MANCHESTER MIDLAND COUNTIES 16 Manchester Terriers This was not the easiest of entries to judge, as I was concerned about the size having some who were far too big. Movement was another problem. The Standard says ‘free & balanced with good reaching forequarters & driving power in hindquarters.’ There weren’t many that fitted that description. Small feet is another feature of the breed but I had some with rather big feet. On the plus side I found temperaments much improved, I even got kissed by one on the table, that’s never happened before! The bitches were more even & generally better in quality than the dogs. I was very pleased to see my BOB winner being shortlisted by Paul Wilkinson, a real terrier man through & through. A number of gay tails on the move in both sexes spoiled the overall finished picture. MPD (1) 1 O’Boyle’s Ruffagga Prince Charming, just 7 months, understandably a bit short of attention, as this was all fairly new to him. Lovely coat & condition, keen intelligent expression, almond eyes, shapely & well put together, sympathetically handled, moved quite well behind but front legs flapping about, happy & full of beans. Ears need to settle. PD (2) 1 R Prince Charming; 2 Downie’s Egloshayle Prince Piran, 9 months, just too much of him for me, masculine head & outlook, self assured & showed very well, fit & well muscled, strong body but topline level & slightly long cast, active mover, feet rather big. JD (4) 1 Freer’s Hawthorn Chap at Felfree, 17 months, good size & type, pleasing head, neat well carried ears, well marked, good thumbprints, firm body, good hindquarters, moved well behind. Tail on the gay side when moving. Well handled & kept focus well; 2 Straughan & Cripps’ Talanors In For A Treat, 13 months, quality youngster, dark intelligent eyes, well carried ears, good outline & depth of body. Standing a little slack in front, well carried tail on the move. Needs to strengthen in movement all round but I liked for type; 3 Charlton’s Digelsa Done N’Dusted at Lizelms. PGD (4) Mixed for quality. 1 O’Boyle’s Parcelin Furet at Ruffagga, 2 ½ years, smart looking dog in hard condition, well muscled & proportioned, keen expression, showed well. Moved well behind but could be tidier in front; 2 Noden’s Joemario Running On Red, 3 years, typical head & expression, using his ears well, firm body, could use his neck to better advantage, well sprung ribs, sympathetically handled; 3 Adams & Harris’ Eaglespur Prince Charming. LD (3,1) 1 Church’s Rattustrap Charlie Brown, 19 months, excellent quality & type, I liked his head, eyes & intelligent expression, well marked, arched neck, good body & topline, glossy coat, moved well when he wanted to but kept stopping when he had to move on his own, clean silhouette, well conditioned & handled; 2 Willis’ Talanors Super Treat, 3 years, quality head, neat ears, excellent body & depth, held his topline going round, very well handled & presented. Movement today was a bit of a hop & a skip. OD (3) 1 CC, Carter & Harrison’s Ch Digelsa Declaration, 3 years, positive showman who never stopped, good head & eyes, keen expression, neat well carried ears, fit body, good muscletone, strong quarters, well sprung ribs, held topline on the move, active mover, on his toes, well handled; 2 Walshaw’s Talanors Diamonds N Dreams avec Jamark, 2 years, very good head & expression, clean neckline, good body & outline, excellent condition, well marked. Not just as assured on the move as 1; 3 Olbinson & Kelly’s Paucelin Andoni at Carapast. MPB (1) 1 O’Boyle’s Ruffagga Little Promise, 8 months, quality head, sparkling dark eyes, well carried ears when they settled, well balanced with good body & outline, moved well behind & made a good picture going round. Promising. PB (1) 1 R Little Primrose. JB (3,1) 1 Oxley’s Digelsa D’Amour, 15 months, real eyecatcher, same way bred as DCC winner, clearly a winning combination, this one is better marked. Quality head, neat ears, lovely eyes, extrovert personality, confident showgirl, moved well, good overall proportions. Very gay tail carriage on the move; 2 Marshall’s Talanors Treat Me Special at Jepejo, 12 months, not the expression of 1, ears all over the place, good neckline & depth of body, held her topline on the move, tail carriage OK, fit & well conditioned. Tendency to pace on the move. PGB (3,2) 1 RCC, Heller’s Limoncello Cecilia Beaux, 20 months, most attractive youngster, in excellent form, stood alone but could hold her own in any company. Good head & eyes, ears settled eventually, very ably handled. Well proportioned, in hard condition, well muscled glossy coat, one of the better movers today, always in tune with her young handler. LB (3,1) 1 Barlow’s Nightfury Bold Venture, 21 months, good for size & type, well muscled quarters, feminine head, dark eyes, very well marked with good thumbprints, strong body, short glossy coat, sure footed & positive on the move, well handled; 2 Sharpe’s Rosettia High Hopes, 2 years, not 100 per cent relaxed in the ring today as it was rather noisy in this area, lovely arch to her neck, firm fit body of good length, showed well standing. Hind action a bit close & could be firmer in front. OB (5) 1 CC & BOB, Saxton, Dale & Emrick’s Ch Rattustrap Imperial Red, 2 years, classy bitch with that touch of elegance, caught my eye instantly when they first lined up, gorgeous head & expression, excellent topline, body & depth, well marked, good thumbprints, well carried tail on the move, very showy & focused, easy mover. All quality & style; 2 Peacham’s Felfree A Touch Of Glam for Manrio, 3 years, attractive head, arched neck, moved & showed well, good body & depth. I preferred elegance & topline of 1; 3 Cawley’s Ch Marlablue In A Twirl, completing a decent trio. LIZ CARTLEDGE
