THE KERRY BLUE TERRIER CLUB OF ENGLAND OPEN SHOW JUDGE: JANE CHARLETON (Janeyjimjams)

Thank you to the Committee and exhibitors for such a lovely entry at the Kerry Blue Terrier Club of England Open Show held in partnership with SWAKA, and to my able steward Wendy who kept the ring flowing. The late Eileen Foy said a good Kerry had the head of a lady and the backside of a cook!! These contrasting attributes were the deciding factor in selecting my BIS! There was a marked variation in colour, presentation styles, coat texture and ear sets with pleasingly only one irregular bite. Movement covered the full spectrum from dynamic to close behind. Correct colour was not over represented, however, overall the confirmation standard was superb and I was spoilt for choice. I was delighted with my winning lineup but, for me, the star of the day was the most beautiful puppy, Violet, who made her debut in style going on to win Terrier Puppy Group 3 later in the Championship Group. My Best Dog was also awarded Terrier Group 3 evidencing the quality on the day. LIMIT DOG

1 Joalyn Royale Joey (Mrs Leenderts) A rather handsome, very tidy and beautifully presented upstanding dog of good type. I was especially struck by his pleasing size, gleaming coat of nicely clearing blue colour, lovely ripples of Marcel-like waves and glowing sheen. Ears well placed but were not always behaving otherwise a strong lean head carried on a clean reaching neck gave this dog a balanced square outline. Moderate front, good depth of chest, well ribbed, short back, level topline, well coupled, correct set on and carriage, well angulated with plenty behind the tail. Moved out well.

OPEN DOG (3)

1 Kebulak Royal Flush (Mrs O’Rourke) Eye catching, up to size 2.5 yr old dog. Darker colour than ideal for age but waves and gleam in evidence. Strong, balanced masculine head, flat skull, dark eye. Muscular reachy neck. Initially reticent at being gone over but an outgoing ‘Look at me!’ attitude came to the fore on the move which won him this class against a strong challenge from no2. Strong, driving well angulated rear quarters. A tad neater front would give him a lower sweeping reach to complete the picture but the longer back and loin compensated giving him overall a pleasing dynamic and powerful movement. Best Dog, Reserve Best in Show.

2 CH Catachagorm Checkmate By Dogazza (AI) (AXI) (Ms Somers) Handsome, excellent blue coloured, strong imposing dog fully up to size. Masculine powerful head, dark eye, clean, long muscular neck, good lay of shoulder, correct ears, strong bone, correct front with muscular well developed chest. In fit, hard pristine condition and well muscled throughout. Full of character and terrier dynamism standing but was lethargic on the move. Length of croup caused tail carriage to drop back on the stand which spoilt his outline but carried ok on the move. Presented in longer coat with plenty of loose waves but some curls in evidence. The best colour coat of the day. Not quite the sparkle on the move of no1 today moving close. Sadly had to withdraw from Dog challenge.

3 Kebulak That’s A Wrap (Davani & Potts)

MINOR PUPPY BITCH

1 Kebulak Violets are Blue (Davani & Potts) A very raw baby out of the top drawer, full of puppy delight, promise and exuberance. She was enjoying her very first experiences in the show ring suitably full of confidence and with no hint of hesitation, this baby ticked every box. Quality outgoing sunny temperament, sound construction and already showcasing the easiest of movements are all in place, and for me, was the real star of the day. She gave a strong challenge for RBB. Surely destined for the limelight, today a star is born.

JUNIOR BITCH

1 Kebulak Solitaire (Davani & Potts) 16 month compact bitch. Feminine balanced head, dark eye, pigmentation coming through nicely and good ear carriage. Well angulated, beautifully presented and sympathetically handled, colour development in evidence. Compact body, correct spring of rib, pleasing tuck, level back, good topline and short coupled to well angulated quarters and low hocks produced strong drive. Good set on. RBB.

POST GRAD BITCH

1 Joalyn Parsley Moon (Jones & Bradley) Beautiful shade of blue colour with waves in abundance. Very endearing, sunny and sweet natured feminine bitch with an outgoing personality. Good for size enjoying her day out. Flat skull, scissor bite, Ears not carried at their best today would prefer more depth to brisket and shorter loin. Moved a tad close behind.

LIMIT BITCH

1 Kebulak Velvet Rose at Kefoxini (Miss MacFadden) Compact square outline, Beautiful luscious profuse silky coat with high gleam and sheen though darker than ideal for age, would prefer more neck and she was flying her ears. Lacking in chest depth and development though moderate width to front, good rear angulation and moved with drive.

OPEN BITCH (abs 2)

1 CH Kebulak Killer Queen (Davani & Potts) Beautiful blue compact bitch of the highest quality with a brooding terrier no-nonsense ‘Don’t mess with me!’ expression. Strong clean feminine head, powerful jaw, reachy neck, beautiful shoulder lay, excellent front and chest and the best angulation. Perfect tail set and carriage. She was a joy to go over. Coiffured and stylised to the most perfect of outlines removed the natural wave and gleam which would’ve been the icing on the cake. Handled on a looser lead showcased her dynamic easy movement with effortless reach and drive. This girl was fit for purpose in style. Best Bitch/Best in Show. Jane
