Irish Southern Irish Terrier Society Ch 21 Judge's Critique

Irish Terrier

KC Breed Standard

S.I.T.S. Ch 21 Judge

Southern Irish Terrier Society 1st August 2021

The Society’s Championship Show was held in partnership with Bath Championship Show. I stood in for the nominated judge, Karina Lucas, as she was unable to fulfil the appointment due to ill health. Since writing my report, very sadly, I have heard Karina has passed away. My sympathies to Karina’s family and friends. She will be very much missed.
There was an entry of 44 with 7 absentees. By way of general comment I found overall quality was good with some promising youngsters in the bitches. Bites were correct but a couple could do with a teeth clean. In some coats were too short making it difficult to assess whether the coat complies with the Breed Standard. The Breed Standard also calls for substance but with a racy outline – not always present in some exhibits. Movement, to some extent, was affected by the length of grass which could have been a little shorter.

Spec Beginners Dog (1) –

1. England’s Just Larkin Around – nice size and shown in good coat. Moved reasonably well but just needs to settle.

Class 2 MPD – No Entries

Class 3 PD – No Entries

Class 4 JD (2) –

1. Anderson’s Ros Michelin at Kerrykeel – promising young dog of nice size, substance and racy outline. Good lay back of shoulder, straight front, tail on top, dense wiry coat, nicely placed ears which he used well. On his toes. Moved okay. RCC 2. Just Larkin Around.

Class 5 ND – No entries

Class 6 PGD (2) –

1. McConnell’s Tootrock Arcturus – on the big side, would prefer better head proportions, ear placement okay. Slightly loose in front movement otherwise moved reasonably well. More settled in his showing than second place. 2. Nevill’s Norakim An Storr At Rosemonelle – nicely balanced but too small for me. Shown in good coat, ears a little erratic, very unsettled on the day making judging him difficult.

Class 7 LD (4)

1. Grant & Hemmings Courtington Ten Sovereigns – well-presented and shown in excellent condition with correct coat. Good length of neck and shoulders well laid back, straight front, well placed ears, dark eye but would just prefer a little more length of head, moved okay.

2. Simons Saredon Red Berry – balanced and of good substance, would prefer a cleaner head, short of coat, showed well and moved okay.

3. Atkins’ Ghengis Khan.

Class 8 OD (4) –

1. Cooke’s Star Du Neufmoulin For Montelle – correct head proportions with well-placed ears, dark eye, straight front, good length of neck, shoulders well laid back, correct coat, strong body and well ribbed back. Plenty of substance without being coarse and a racy outline. Moved okay. CC & BOB

 2. Bamsey’s Holbam Celtic Wizard JW – lovely head & typical expression, correct ears which he used well, dark eye, good overall balance but would just like a little more of him. Showed well. 3. Hardman’s If’s An Illusion.

Class 9 VD (1, 1a)

Class 10 Spec Beginners Bitch (2, 1a) –

1. Davidson’s Saredon Miss Davidson – promising 7 month old pup. Excellent jacket and presentation, ears well set on, small dark eye, clean head and typical expression. Good outline and moved well. Just needs to learn to show which I am sure will come.

Class 11 MPB (2) –

1. Bradley’s Sunnystone Bright Light – another promising pup who was full of herself. Displayed all the characteristics you look for in an Irish, clean head with well-placed ears, straight front, good reach of neck, tail on top and strong quarters. Can move well but sometimes a little erratic. A close call between her and second place – just preferred the outgoing temperament of this pup

BP. 2. Saredon Miss Davidson.

Class 12 PB (2) –

1. Saredon Miss Davidson

2. Gomer’s Kerrykeel Cara – 9 months old, she does not need to grow on anymore. Correct head proportions with pleasing expression, good coat and balanced outline. Moved okay.

Class 13 JB (2, 2a)

Class 14 NB (3, 2a) –

1. Lee’s Ivyblue Crinkles – I liked this bitch, typical without being overdone. Pleasing head and expression with well-placed ears which she used to advantage, small dark eye, good reach of neck and well laid back shoulders. Straight front, strong hindquarters. Nicely balanced with substance and shown in good coat. Moved and handled well. Pleased to award her the RCC.

Class 15 PGB (6) –

A difficult class who will probably change places with each other many times

1. Oliver’s Kerrykeel Aobheann -  a feminine head of correct proportions, well placed ears giving pleasing expression. Plenty of substance and a pleasing outline. Showed well and at one with her handler. 2. Prices’ Magairlin This Girl Can – nice size with good overall balance. Her ears were a little erratic spoiling her expression. Moved well – just preferred the head of my winner. 3. Hobsons’ Erredwiltsir Shine A light.

Class 16 LB (5) –

Some very nice bitches in this class with close calls

1. Thomas’s Montelle Light The Way At Sunnystone – she epitomizes what I am looking for in this breed – the characteristics of an Irish. Nice size and shown in good coat. Pleasing head and expression with dark eye and well placed ears which she used to advantage, Straight front, strong quarters, correct bend of stifle and tail on top. Well balanced. Pleased to award her the CC.

2. Wortley’s Jarabica Grace O’Malley – another nice bitch and similar comments apply. Very well presented and in excellent coat. Just preferred the overall balance of my winner.

3. Hobsons’ Erredwiltsir Irish Bells.

Class 17 OB (5,1a) –

Again some very nice bitches with different types who undoubtedly will change places with each other on another day.

1. Prices’ Ch Magairlin Adhmor Queen -  feminine bitch with substance but without being coarse. Nice size and in good coat. Reasonable head and expression, dark eye, good body proportions with correct top line. Moved well with her handler.

2. Anderson’s Kerrykeel Daicota – another nice bitch who showed well. Pleasing head and well placed ears, straight front, strong quarters and nice size. Unfortunately coat not at its best.

3. Atkins’ Holbam Celtic Summer ShCM.

Class 18 VB (5,1a) –

1. Bamsey’s Ch Holbam Pearly Star ShCM – in her ninth year and looking very well. Correct size and overall balance. Feminine head, pleasing expression, a little short of coat but showed well for her handler.

2. Nevills’ Rosemonelle Isabella – in her eleventh year and in lovely condition.

3. Lee’s Sujoncla Goyathlay.
