IRISH CRUFTS 09 IRISH TERRIER Judge(s): Mr P M Dorrian
Irish Terriers I would like to thank the Crufts committee for its invitation to judge this prestigious show & the exhibitors who provided such a good entry, particularly in the bitch classes. The overall standard within the breed at present certainly leaves room for improvement, especially in head & expression. Ear size & placement is most important along with correct colour & size of eye in achieving the desired expression. Movement in general was disappointing, looseness in fronts & lack of drive behind but in the main presentation was good. VD (2) 1 Seabridge’s Sunjoncla Blackfoot, soundly made dog, nice type & outline, displaying good head quality. Needing a new jacket. Moved a shade close behind; 2 Bently-Mouat’s Ch Newguild Majesty, belying his age, soundly made, good coat which needed a little more trimming to give the required topline. A little strong in shoulder & failing to 1 in head quality. Movement could be better. PD (2) 1 Pratt’s Terrajay Special Brew, very showy puppy, confident in the ring, well bodied, displaying nice outline, good coat, good front & well angulated hindquarters. A little unsettled on the move. BP: 2 Sargent’s Henry’s Pride of Sidford, larger than than 1, sound in front, well angulated hindquarters. Let down by poor ear carriage e& not moving well going away. PGD (10,3) 1 Seabridge’s Kerrykeel Wounded Knee at Sujoncla, upstanding dog, good head, neck, shoulder & ear placement, sound hindquarters, good bend of stifle, nicely presented, moving & showing well. RCC; 2 Hardman’s Bonosue The Mighty Quinn, racy dog, good topline giving overall smart outline, in good coat. Failing in head & ears to 1. Moved & showed well; 3 Atwell’s Montelle Mr Sandman at Xanwil, up to size, heavily made dog, in good coat & condition. Not the head quality of those above. Moved soundly. LD (6,1) 1 O’Reilly’s Cilradharc Dian Cecht, racy dog, pleasing head, neck & shoulder, good topline giving overall smart outline, sound hindquarters, good coat, movement erratic at times; 2 Hardman’s Bonosue Eric The Red, balanced dog, similar in type to 1. Needed new coat. Failed in head to 1 & wouldn’t settle on the move; 3 Bradshaw’s Montelle Lord Montague, balanced dog, soundly made, smart outline, presented in good coat, moved OK behind. A little loose in front. Handled & showed well. OD (5) 1 Anderson’s Kerrykeel Ronan, nicely balanced, upstanding dog, excelling in head & expression, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, good front, nice outline & sound hindquarters, moving with drive, handled & shown to advantage. CC; 2 Seabridge’s Ch Balengro Tben Tainte at Sujoncla, worthy champion, good head & expression, similar in type to 1, pleasing to go over. Not his best coat. Moved & showed well; 3 Ruehl’s Ch/Ger/Ned/Cro/Lux Ch Darren Von Der Emsmuehle, upstanding dog, differing in type to those above. Overall head & expression spoiled a little by uneven ear placement & would prefer darker eye. Well presented, in good coat & moving OK in both directions. GCD (3) 1 Ch N Majesty; 2 M Mr Sandman at X; 3 Cook’s Lionwood Rowanberry, large strongly made dog, presented in good coat. A little too much condition at present. Showed & moved steadily. VB (5,1) 1 Bamsey’s Montelle Night Star, 9½ years, good condition & fit for age, shown in good coat & moved freely; 2 Bradshaw’s Myscharrma Lady Roseinna, similar to 1, active & soundly made, moving OK; 3 Hardman’s Bonosue Valhalla Queen, smaller bitch than 1 & 2, not using ears & generally not showing her best. Needs new coat. PB (6) 1 Jackson’s Montelle Star Of The Ring, quality puppy, nicely balanced, racy outline, well bodied, in good coat & moving freely. Didn’t put her best into the challenge for BP; 2 Hardman’s Bonosue Snow Storm, well presented, in good coat. Failing in head quality to 1. Needs to settle when moving in both directions; 3 Ferguson’s Parkdyke Country Legend, mature puppy. A little wide in front & upright in shoulder. Failed in head & expression to those above & not moving correctly. JB (5) 1 Bradshaw’s Ruffmar Bronzed Ballerina, quality bitch, head OK, good front & hindquarters giving pleasing outline, presented in good coat & condition, moved freely; 2 Rundle & Goddard’s Allatsea Gift Of Gold at Marshcourt, nice head. Ears erratic, failed in neck & shoulder to 1, needs a new jacket which would improve overall outline. Moved OK; 3 Wooding’s Woodrath Golden Buttercup, ear carriage tended to spoil expression & would prefer more level topline & better layback of shoulder which would improve overall outline. Moved OK. PGB (7) 1 Bamsey’s Holbam Pearly Shannon, racy bitch, soundly made, pleasing outline, well angulated hindquarters, moved & showed OK; 2 Barker’s Irvonhill Mojito, smart bitch. Would prefer a little more all round balanced head & expression, moved & showed well; 3 Rhodes’ Kilcavan Peaseblossom at Ghyllslap, pleasing overall balance, racy outline. Poor ear carriage spoiled overall head & expression, movement needs to improve. LB (11,1) 1 Blower’s Saredon Ruby Red of Turith, quality bitch, nice topline, soundly made front & rear, presented in good coat, moving & showing well; 2 Bower & Kenyan’s Wishes In The Wind, nice bitch, soundly made, pleasing outline, good head & reach of neck, well presented, in good coat, moved & showed OK; 3 Bentley-Mouat’s Newguild Twist, different type to 1 & 2 & failing in front to those above. Ear placement would improve overall expression but presented in good coat. OB (16,3) 1 Lovelace’s Ch Brazan Seghill, real quality bitch displaying lots of attributes, good head, neck & shoulder, nicely balanced, good set on, well angulated hindquarters, good coat, presented in tip-top condition & when settled moved & showed soundly. CC, BOB & G4; 2 Walmer’s Macrua’s Fire Flower, quality bitch, different in type to 1. Sound construction all round, good head, ears & expression, presented in good coat & condition, moved & showed well. Pushed 1 all the way. RCC; 3 Barker’s Kells American Heritage, good bitch, correct size, lovely head, ears & expression, well bodied. Not as pleasing in overall outline to above. Presented in good coat, moving & showing well. GCB (3,1) 1 Wooding’s Sujoncla White Horse, presented in good coat. More attention to head trimming would enhance overall expression. Moved & showed OK; 2 Plumber’s Red Velvet, failed in head to 1 & would need to improve when on the move. PATRICK DORRIAN
