FOX SMOOTH JUDGE LKA 22

My thanks to the Committee for inviting me to judge this very prestigious General Championship Show. I have always help this Association in high esteem, having a great of respect for the Ladies involved, both past and present. Thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me to go over your ‘Smooths’. I was pleased to see that from a relatively small entry the Smooth Fox Terrier Best of Breed, Champion Kanix Quickstep went on to win the Terrier Group, later she went Reserve Best In Show. Congratulations to all concerned. Some exhibits did not like the floor, which was unfortunate because I have seen these dogs give a good account of themselves in better surroundings. With the exception of a couple of exhibits all were in lovely condition, well presented and not ‘over trimmed’, which unfortunately accentuates not only the good points but also the faults. Movement in general was disappointing , the Standard states that ‘Fore and Hind limbs carried straight forward and parallel’ , this gives the dogs an easy and pleasant gait .My thanks to my Stewards, Judith Middleton and Geraldine Dodds.

1 Schoneberg ‘s Earl vd Schonenbergen. Upstanding black headed dog, masculine, beautifully balanced, keen expression, this dog really appealed. Good outline standing, which he kept on the move, stood up and showed. Long lean head, strong foreface, neat ears, dark eye, good neck clean well laid shoulders, level topline, tail on top. Nice bone, good legs and feet, correct ribbing, strong well angulated quarters, moved well both ways, well presented pleased to award him the CC, his first, I hope the other two will not be too far away. Good luck.

2 Julian’s Lanyon’s Prime Suspect . Rich tan marked dog in lovely order as usual from this kennel, not quite as compact as the winner. Pleasing head of good length, flat skull , strong muzzle, good ears and eye, good expression straight front , nice round bone, good ‘middle piece’, strong quarters , moved and showed well.

1 Wilberg’s Champion Kanix Quintus. Well known lightly tan marked dog, I judged him last year for a BIS Award, today he did not have the same ‘Sparkle’. He is beautifully balanced throughout, nice size, good head with correct chiselling below his dark eyes, flat skull, clean cheeks, neck of good length, clean shoulders. Nice legs, tight feet, his forehand is exceptional, but he lacks strength through his quarters, however he is a worthy champion and a quality dog, moved well both ways. Good close jacket. Well presented. Res. CC.

2nd McLaughlin’s Nisyros Crossfire At Azrams . Balanced black headed dog that I have admired from the ringside, I have seen him look and show better, he appeared out of coat, lacking the closeness required to complete the picture. Lovely lean head, strong muzzle, dark eye , well placed ears, best of legs and feet, well ribbed up, level topline, short coupled , would like more drive on the move. I am sure he will have a better day.

1 Hannar’s Bokmar Kirie At Borovale Tan marked bitch, classic outline standing, compact and well balanced, stands four square and shows her socks off, feminine bitch , keen expression. Good head , small eye, neat well folded ears, neck of fair length, well sprung ribs, short loin, level topline, tail well set. Strong well muscled quarters with good appearance of second thigh, movement could be more positive. Pleased to award her the Rec CC.

2 Griffiths’ Yoxella Well In Touch. Liked this black headed bitch very much, unfortunately she hated the floor, I know from seeing her on previous occasions she can move ,but today her movement was intermittent and difficult to assess. She has a lovely head and keen outlook, well placed ears, punishing muzzle, her neck flows into good well laid shoulders, good quarters, tail well set and the best of legs and feet.

3 Marston’s Chipstead Snowflake.

1 Kettle’s Foxindean Radio Ga Ga. Heavily black marked elegant bitch in lovely condition, long lean head, nice dark eye, ears need to settle, compact and balanced. Adequate bone for her size, ideally would like a bit more of her. Great showgirl, moved well.

2 Mullan and McFadden’s Glendraterra Blythe Spirt. More substantial Black marked bitch, nice type, well bodied. Liked her head, strong foreface good expression, dark eye, unfortunately she was ‘flying her ears and did not help her handler. However at 7 years old she gave a good account of herself and showed better as the class went on. Close decision.

Best class of the day, some quality bitches.

1 Marston’s Chipstead Petal. This black marked bitch won the class on her overall quality and conformation, she was the best moving exhibit of the day. Sound and well balanced. Good head, dark eye, good ears, round bone good feet, well bodied, correct ribbing, well sprung at the back flatter behind her elbows to effect free movement. Deep bodied, strong quarters moved with drive.

2 Griffiths and Weiss’ Yoxella Whoa Black Betty, lives up to her name, elegant quality bitch in lovely order, best of legs and feet, long lean head, straight front, well bodied, good hind angulation. Moved and showed well.

3 Martin’s Tamedale Fenella.

OB (2)

1 Wilberg’s Ch Kanix Quickstep Beautiful black headed bitch that combines substance with quality, ultra feminine compact and well balanced graceful outline, she fits the standard to a T. Head of fair length, flat skull, clean cheeks, dark eye, not at all bold, well chiselled strong foreface, correct well placed ears, which she uses to advantage complementing her excellent expression. Good reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, clean straight front. Forelegs well boned right down to her tight feet with no noticeable pastern. Well ribbed up, short strong loin with tail well set, good hind angulation, stand four square and interacts well with her handler. Her movement is straight and positive moving through from her shoulders, she covers the ground driving well from behind, She projects a classic picture both standing and moving. I had no hesitation in awarding her the CC & BOB.

2 Kettle’s Foxindean Future Legend Pretty tan marked bitch unfortunate to meet the winner. Presented in good order this bitch has a lot to like about her Good head and dark eye, nice bone, good feet and front, short coupled, moved and showed well. BOB Challenge, both the dog Earl vd Schonenbergen and the bitch Ch. Kanix Quickstep were good examples of the Breed , they showed and moved well I just preferred the freedom of movement and outlook of the bitch on the day, I later discovered that Quickstep had won the Terrier Group and went on to Reserve Best In Show under Liz Cartledge. Congratulations.
