CRITIQUE FOR SMOOTH FOX TERRIERS AT THE FOX TERRIER CLUB OF SCOTLAND – 11/11/23
Judge: Roger Bebbington
On arrival at the FT of Scotland Championship show, I was informed that the BIS Judge, Dr Ian Gabriel had withdrawn from judging due to a family crisis. I was asked to step in and judge these awards. Thanks to Secretary Janet Rougvie, President Morag Cook and the Committee for their hospitality.
For BIS, I had two excellent dogs to select from. The wire bitch, Wiggins & Westwood’s Ch. Nethertonian Severina, a top- quality wire excelling head and expression. Small dark eyes. Neat ears, correctly placed. Lovely neck and shoulders. Short back. Correct tail set. Good rear assembly with plenty behind the tail. Superb coat and condition and so well presented as one would expect from this kennel. Moved well both fore and aft. Delighted to award her Best in Show.
The smooth dog, Anderson, Watt & Quigg’s Kajsenbore’s Hypa Hypa as Fox at Nisyros. A young black/white dog excelling outline. Good head with nice eye and ears. Excels neck and shoulders. Good legs and feet. Ample bone throughout. Moved soundly. Well presented. On the day, just lacked the maturity of the wire.
For Best Puppy in Show, I had the smooth bitch, Ian Martin’s Zetamaz Drama Queen. A most promising youngster and at just 6 months showed many qualities. She was very confident for one so young. Just requires to settle on the move but this will come with age.
The wire bitch, Cara Davani’s Travella She’s on Fire. A most glamorous youngster showing all the characteristics of her breeding. Beautiful head and expression. Neat ears. Lovely neck into well placed shoulders. Short coupled. Great tail set with plenty behind. Moved really well both fore and aft. Quality coat with presentation to the minute. Delighted to award her Best Puppy in Show and will watch her career with interest.
For Best Veteran, I had the smooth bitch, Annette Kettle’s Yoxella Warm Spell. An eight year old in lovely hard condition. Nice overall type with good head and expression. Moved well in profile but not so positive behind.
The wire dog, Pat Rice’s Winning Colours at Duchmorn. Another eight year who excels breed type. Lovely head and expression. Neat ears. Short coupled. Excellent coat and presentation. So very sound on the move. Best Veteran in show.
SMOOTHS:
Judge – Mrs. J. Thornton
Firstly I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of The Fox Terrier Club of Scotland for inviting me to judge Smooth Fox Terriers at their annual Championship Show. This club offered me the opportunity to award CCs for the first time in the late 80s, then there was an entry of 98, in 2023 just 27, a sign of the times and not just confined to our breed. I had a most enjoyable day and was made very welcome by the President, secretary and committee who all work very hard to put on a good show.
Thank you also to all the exhibitors who entered showed under me, it was very much appreciated
My overall impression of those entered was that movement needs to be addressed plus a smooth needs to be “on the tiptoe of expectation” not propped and topped with every foot placed, let them show themselves off preferably at the end of the lead.
I was however very pleased with my principal winners, the dog very much at the start of his career while the bitch completed her title on the day.
Finally many thanks also to Jim Smith who did a great job as my steward and kept everything flowing well.
VD or B (3,1):
1. Kettle’s Yoxella Warm Spell. 8 year old predominantly white bitch with ticking in good form. Good head, enough neck, level topline, well angulated quarters. Showing well for her owner/handler. BV & RBVIS.
2. Cook’s Zetamaz Cool Dude. 10 year old black and white male who has a lovely head and ears. Good body shape and short coupled but carrying a little too much weight today.
SPB D or B (1,0):
1. Henderson’s Finleric Snow Quartz. White bitch with black head of good quality with well-set ears. Best of legs and feet, excellent quarters, a touch short stepping in front but showed well and put on a good performance. BSB.
PD (1,1)
JD (2,1):
1. Anderson, Watt & Quigg’s Kajsenborg’s Hypa Hypa As Fox. All white dog with black head markings who is just a few days out of puppy. He is well grown and has excellent body shape with good head proportions and well set ears. He moves with style and covers the ground with ease and flows round the ring. To be hypercritical his front needs to tighten up just a touch but hopefully that will come with maturity. He won the CC with a bit to spare and later went on to take BOB where he put on an impressive performance against the bitch finally going on to RBIS. I am sure he will have a bright future. Congratulations to all the connections.

OD (3,0):
This was quite a challenging class to judge, all three being of different types.
1. Schoneberg’s Hemingway vom Ernstthal. Tan and white dog who looks an absolute picture standing and in profile. One of the best heads of the day with the required chiselling giving the correct expression. He has lovely bone, legs and feet, good quarters which he uses well but he was somewhat loose in front movement today which was such a pity. Res CC.
2. Brookes’ Zetamaz Rainbow Quest. Smart heavyish marked black and white dog of some quality. He possesses a good head and ears which give the correct expression. Good body, tail well set and carried, more positive hind movement would complete the picture. 3. McLaughlan’s Nisyros Crossfire at Azrams. I have admired this dog from the ringside in the past. He has a good head and ears, good forehand with the best of legs and feet. However today he was somewhat overweight and lacking bloom in his coat which was a pity.
PB (3,0):
1. Martin’s Zetamaz Drama Queen. A lovely puppy just 6 months and a few days. She has a lovely head and ears, good neck and shoulders and lovely body shape, she is short coupled with good tailset and carriage. She is full of joy showing off the end of a lead. She needs to settle in movement which she will as she learns her job. In lovely coat & condition. Well-handled to win BP & RBPIS.
2. Davison’s Tynefox Villa Maria. Predominantly white puppy with ticking of 7 and a half months. Different type to first being longer cast but time is on her side to come together, decent head and ears, good tailset & carriage. Moved OK once settled.
3. Davison’s Tynefox Valpolicella
JB (2,0):
1. Hannar’s Borovale Lonesome Dove. Stylish youngster with good head & ears, her neck flows into good shoulders, short coupled, good angulation behind. Loses her topline at times and needs to settle on the move but she is young and exuberant, time is on her side.
2. Henderson’s Finleric Baby Doll. White with black head which is of good proportions and has well set ears. Short coupled and well bodied. Unfortunately her tail carriage lets her down spoiling the overall picture.

GB (1,0):
1. Finleric Snow Quartz
PGB (3,2):
1. Davison’s Tynefox Vida Loca. Handy sized bitch with good head and ears. She has the best of legs and feet, good body with very good quarters. She is a touch short stepping in front but a nice bitch overall.
LB (4,1):
1. Marston’s Chipstead Petal. I really liked this bitch, she is lovely to go over, long lean head with well-set ears, good neck and shoulders, well bodied with good quarters and tail set. She moved OK once settled but was a handful for her owner especially in the challenge which was a shame as she could have pushed hard for higher honours.
2. Martin’s Tamedale Fenella. Black and white bitch excelling in head and ears, nice body shape if a little long, good tail set and carriage. Would prefer more strength in hind movement. Put down in first class order.
3. Anderson & Watt’s Nisyros Girl Power.
OB (5,2):
1. Hannars’ Bokma Kirie at Borovale. Tan and white bitch who has a good head and well placed and carried ears giving a varminty expression. Good neck and shoulders with short back, correct tail set and carriage. She put on a good performance both in her class and the bitch challenge moving well up and down and on the go round. I was pleased to award her the CC, her third. She has been pushing hard for her title over the last year and today it all came together. Congratulations!
2. Brookes’ Zetamaz Maraschino. All white bitch with black head markings. Different type to 1 being taller and more refined. She has a good head, ears could be a touch tighter to her skull, lovely neck and shoulders, moved well, an elegant bitch. Res CC.
3. Kettle’s Foxindean Future Legend. I remember this bitch coming out pre pandemic and one I admired from the ringside. She was in lovely coat and condition, has good legs and feet, is short coupled but somehow she looked rather matronly and tired today. She has a good head but her ears tend to spoil her expression. She moved OK up and down but a little erratic when going round.
