Fox Terrier Expo 2012 Judge's Critiques
Ruth Barbour FTC 26 August 2012 BIS
I was very honoured to be invited to judge BIS at the Fox Terrier Club show on the second day of the Expo 12 weekend. It was wonderful to see so many fox terriers at these shows. Congratulations to those who had the idea for the event and who carried it through so successfully.
BIS was the wire dog O’Donoghue’s Blackdale Supreme This ambitiously named dog certainly lives up to his name. His greatest attribute is his overall balance – everything is in harmony and he is in no way exaggerated. Not the biggest of dogs but masculine. Lovely eye and small beautifully carried ears give him a most typical expression. Short-coupled. Powerful hindquarters. Moved very easily and smoothly. Well-presented.
Reserve BIS was the Smooth Dog Hall’s Gosel Ceylonese. Has a commanding presence. Well up to size. Long head. Good reach of neck. Good tail set. Needs perhaps to body up a little more.
Best puppy was Barker’s Irvonhill Poinsetta most attractive 9 month old wire bitch. Full of character. Overall well-balanced. Lovely head and expression with neat, well-carried ears. Good legs and feet. Good turn of stifle.Moved well when settled down.
Reserve best puppy was the 8 month old smooth dog Contrera’s s Percy von der Bismarckquelle. Another promising puppy. Alert expression. Good topline. A little more erratic than winner when moving. Just lost a close decision.
Brace Wilson’s well matched smooths when standing and moving won over the Christ’s
wires.

FOX TERRIER EXPO 2012 Judge: Janice Campbell (Australia)
It was a great honour and privilege to be invited to judge Smooths at the Fox Terrier Expo, the 126th Fox Terrier Club Gold Cup Show. The opportunity to judge our special breed in their country of origin is the pinnacle for a breeder/judge/exhibitor. I would like to thank all exhibitors for bringing their fox terriers from many countries, it was a pleasure to have so many high quality dogs to choose from. The venue was very pleasant and comfortable however I am sure some dogs would perform and gait better outdoors as some seemed restricted in movement most likely due to the indoor surface. Thank you to my stewards Patrick and Rachel with their efficient assistance in the ring. Congratulations to the hard working committee to bring about this special event in the Anniversary and Olympic Year, the trophy table, and cake, were beyond compare. Being escorted to the ring by a young torch bearer was a great way to start the day.

FOX TERRIER EXPO 2012 – Judge - Paolo Dondina
I consider a great honour to have attended and judged, probably, the most ancient
famous and exclusive Fox Terrier Club Championship Show in the world, on Sunday 26 August 2012 at the Sport Connection near Coventry, the most famous old town, in the most English and beautiful region of England.
No better place to celebrate the cream of the two beautiful Breeds on parade , Smooth Fox Terrier (100 exhibits entered) and Wire Fox Terrier (6o exhibits entered) from UK and many foreign Countries.
All the best Kennels and bloodlines where there to remember the Terrier fanciers all over the world that “Britannia” is the Country of the Terrier’s origins and where everybody had to look since many centuries. No doubt about it. I very much appreciated the congratulations of the American Fox Terrier Club (1885), printed in the Catalogue (p.4), “wishing everyone fun and success on this historic occasion!”
The organization of the great two days event was impeccable. The traditional official dinner (with hundreds people attending on Saturday evening) was absolutely fantastic, so smart and enjoyable. The international panel of judges of very high profile. The sportive crowd of great Terriers specialists made my Collegue’s and mine an unforgettable experience.
My warm thanks to the Smooth Fox Terrier Association’s, Hon Secretary Mrs. J. Thorton; to the Hon. Secretary of the Fox Terrier Club of Wales, Mrs. M. Phillips and last but not least Mrs. A. Wilson Hon. Secretary of The Fox Terrier Club. Thanks also to the Show Managers Mr. P. Horspool and Mr. E. Allen.
Having judged since many years I never had such satisfaction and thrill to put my hands over so many quality Wires. This is a wonderful feeling, as I realize that this unique judging experience has happened at, probably, the end of my judging career.
Presentation and dogs condition I think was outstanding.
Most of the exhibitors gave me a fine example of great “british sportsmanship”
I thought my winners are great representative of the Breed, also if I know that mybe some exhibitors breeders and even experts have not been in complete agreement with me. This is absolutely natural and correct and I respect different opinions because disagreement is an important part of our sport and hobby that helps to improve the quality and the health of pure bred dogs.
Very pleased to see my young BOB male Blakedale Supreme to win the “Supreme” (two days) BIS under Mr. Frank Kane after The accurate and expert selection (BIS Sunday) OF Dr. Ruth Barbour. After the judging I was told by his happy and smart breeder-handler that his record young dog (I gave a third ticket) became British Champion in six days. Well done!

Class 31 – Open Bitch –With eight super bitches on the ground (only two absent) this class have been very hot to judge. I thought my best three are outstanding and an honour to put my hands on.
1st – Savinis’ Ch Gina Gee von Foliny Home - At nearly seven years this bitch, so well prepared and presented, in her full maturity looked in sparkling show conditions. Right size. Absolutely sound and feminine. Elegant and so typical all through. Not easy to describe how close this bitch is to the Standard. Beautiful head
and expression, impeccable front and feet. Super neck and shoulders. Short back, horse hunter looking in body. The best and most correct mover of all the bitches. My CC winner. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of her expert handler, she did not use her ears properly, later afternoon, in a very “hot” and “magic” atmosphere of great suspense, competing for BOB.
2nd – Barkers’ Am Ch Hamptoncourts Mystique at Valken - Another superb representative of the Breed. Right size. Hard show conditions with harsh coat. Lovely feminine head with long foreface. Short back. Correct topline. Good bone with impeccable front and cat feet. Ideal set of tail and carriage. Covered a lot of ground while moving with correct front action and powerful hind push. Her smart handler could not do better.
3rd – Leungs’ Ch Travella Star Craft - A very young bitch of great future I have admired from the ringside at Cruft’s this year. I thought on the day she had to give way to the more mature above two bitches. The one completed a trio that made my day unique and unforgettable. Thank you.
