DANDIE DINMONT JUDGE WINDSOR 14

Dandie Dinmont Terriers

I usually refrain from the customary pretentious pre critique ramble as I am never certain just how representative of the overall breed my entry may or may not be. However here are some observations from the dogs I judged at Windsor. I was surprised that so many dogs had very short ribcages, it seemed the longer the dog, the shorter the ribbing. The Standard calls for "ribs well sprung & round, chest well developed”. There were a lot of weak necks. The breed standard is very specific on necks: "Very muscular, well developed & strong, showing great power.” Without a powerful neck the Dandie moves away from being a traditional working Terrier. I also had a few light eyes & suspect mouths. Despite the above I thought the overall standard was very good with movement in particular being excellent in so many classes – well done breeders.

1 & BP, Johnson’s Puddockswell My Dear Watson for Incantocani, the first class of the day was one of the strongest, I can never remember seeing a better moving class of puppies before. Winner was a 7 month old pepper in remarkable coat for such a youngster. Good length to height ratio, front feet need to tighten up, my only criticism on the day was lack of usual puppy animation – very promising puppy;

2 Rolland’s Dandiroyal Diggory Delvet, different type to 1and very mature for one so young. Good mustard jacket coming, appeared slight ‘leggier’ that 1, but this could be down to trimming. Ticked all the required boxes for head, topline & tailset;

3 Young’s Inzievar The Goldsmith.

JD (4)

1 RCC, Noble’s Hawkesmill Indiana, 1st & 2nd very close between 2 pepper littermates, who will no doubt swap places throughout their careers. Lovely pepper jacket & furnishings both of correct colour & texture. Strong masculine head, with typical expression, moved with great purpose;

2 H Indigo;

3 Young’s Inzievar The Goldsmith.

LD (2)

1 Edwards’ Cloverwood Midnight Blue, another nice pepper who appeared on initial inspection to be ‘over coated’ but this was probably just down to his type of coat, but did I feel on the day made him look a little stuffy & flattened his topline – there was a very nice dog underneath, which had a lot to like about him. Lacked vibrancy today, which cost him in the challenge.

OD (3)

1 CC, Kurg’s Ch Etsill Scapa Flow, quality pepper dog which lacks exaggeration in any way, not a flashy eye catcher, but a good solid workmanlike Dandie with correct height to length ratio & outline, strong masculine head with large teeth & nice expression, very good coat, correct mover;

2 Tinsley’s Ch Cloverwood Royal George, another quality dog, this time a mustard of lovely colour to its tight jacket & good colour separation with the furnishings. Powerful neck great domed head & melting expression, pushed hard for class but I felt lacked ambition on the day;

3 Milliner’s The Sun Ch Xenon Z Roxburka at Millerim.

PB (3)

1 Milliner’s Dandiroyal Ferrywiggle at Millerim, a nice well put together mustard puppy, good for size, head, bone & eye, strong mover;

2 Young’s Dentgate Opal, nice to see a puppy with tan legs. Correct pepper coat coming & the right size for a puppy B. I feel the handler & puppy need to do some work together before they show as a team.

JB (5)

1 RCC, Russell’s Hawkesmill Ishbelle, litter sister to my RDCC winner & of very similar type. Feminine expression, another lovely pepper jacket & correct furnishings, pleasing length & outline, this whole litter are excellent movers;

2 Johnson’s Birbrinda Florentine in Incantocani, pretty feminine mustard of correct size with nice outline. Dark eye with the usual melting expression, just lacked animation on the day;

3 Rolland ‘Dandiroyal Puddleglum.

PGB (4)

1 Fry’s Inzievar Gold Thread, nice mustard, a little short of coat today & could possible slim down ever so slightly to complete the picture. Powerful neck let down into well laid shoulders & correct tailset. Moved OK;

2 Bell’s Lannia Harvest Charm, lovely little balanced feminine mustard, who is perhaps a little of the fine side, very pretty, sound mover, nice pencilled jacket, just needs to body up a bit;

3 Eves’ Sylvanken Silver Dawn.

LB (8)

1 Rolland’s Clossongrey Marshwiggle Dandiroyal Imp, lovely head on this feminine pepper lady, dark eyes, correct mouth, nice dark jacket, mover well, especially from behind;

2 Corish’s Cloverwood Five Stars, I have to be honest & say that I found the black ears without any sign of any tassles a little distracting from the overall picture. Very black body coat & I felt could have a little more reach of neck. Good head & outline, great mover;

3 Bird’s Etsill Shapinsay Sound with Birbrinda.

OB (3)

1 Deacon’s Swanwillow Signature, outstanding mustard lady who has quality stamped all over her. Wonderful colour jacket of correct texture & type. Near perfect size with a lovely head & presented the most balanced overall picture for me on the day. Nothing exaggerated, & I found it hard to fault her, on the table or on the move. I was reminded later that I have awarded her BPIS at the DDTC Ch Show in 2010, but she is even better than I remember. I did not hesitate in awarding her the BCC (her first) & eventual BOB. She was later shortlisted in her first group;

2 Russell’s Aus Ch/Ch Jollygaze Hopeless Romantic for Hawkesmill, mother of my 2 RCC winners & I can see why now, but had not idea on the day. Her offspring had the edge today, but I can see why this quality pepper is a Ch. Lovely pepper coat with contrasting furnishings adding to the overall picture of quality. Obviously has passed on the excellent movement to her children.
