DANDIE DINMONT NATIONAL TERRIER 12 Judge(s) MARGARET MACDONALD-CROSS DCC ETSILL SCAPA FLOW (MISS B E HUNTER) Dandie Dinmonts I was delighted with the good entry of 45 giving 54 entries at this my first Ch Dandie appointment. I thank the exhibitors for the sporting way in which most of my placings were accepted – I say ‘most’ because one ‘gentleman’ did not agree with my choice for the Dog CC behaving in a rather unsporting manner. Thankfully it did not spoil my day as I have been awarding CCs in several breeds since 1966 & merely found what was said ‘distasteful’! More importantly it did not spoil the pleasure of the owner of the Dog CC & why should it as this dog had already won a CC & RCCs under senior people in the breed? The quality in Dandies, at the moment, is heavily weighted towards the bitches. I suppose not a bad thing in any breed, but more choice in the males would be good. I was, on the other hand, really spoiled for choice in the bitch challenge & will watch with interest the progress of these ‘young pretenders’! MPD (1) 1 Keevil & Bullock’s Yazga Into The Mystic, 7 months pepper youngster, looks exactly his age, rather raw & gangly, lovely head with melting expression, muscular neck into good shoulders, correct long low weaselly body & when he settles to the job moves soundly both ends, good coat quality & lovely temperament. ND (2) 1 Lowndes’ Glendandie Starcatcher, mustard with a lovely head, expression, strong muzzle & correct bite, good front assembly giving the correct reaching front movement, body shape is good & carries a quality coat, but needs to be stronger behind & to gain more confidence in the ring. PGD (2) 1 Irving’s Dandyhow Dexter, mustard with crisp quality coat that had been overly trimmed for my taste, good head, eye & neck & correct balance of length to height giving the desired long, low body but lacked body shape, is, however, a very free mover reaching well in front & driving behind, his soundness won him the class; 2 Macpherson’s Dawsholm Wee Darrick, I have judged this pepper before & have seen him move so much better, was just not sound on the day, I was very undecided between these two dogs for various reasons, Darrick has a lovely headpiece with wonderful expression & in super coat of quality & well presented, also lacks body shape & has not the length of 1. LD (7) 1 Hughes’ Maganbar Magic Moment, well presented mustard who stood out in the class for superb body shape, good head & dark hazel eye with profuse topknot, muscular neck, nice front assembly, strong short forelegs, good chest & ribs well sprung & round, covered in coat of correct texture, well carried tail & moving correctly both ends; 2 Sleight’s Cassencarrie Bobby Vee, mustard, heavier built throughout with thick coat, eye catching headpiece with profuse topknot, strong neck, well boned, not so long & low as 1, sound mover; 3 Keevil & Bullock’s Yazga Love The One You’re With. OD (5) 1 Hunter’s Etsil Scapa Flow, pepper that fits the standard so well, lovely headpiece with dark hazel eyes of such intelligence, correct bite, strong muscular neck into lovely shoulders & front assembly, well off for bone, chest well developed & well let down between forelegs, body shape is as asked for in the standard – long, strong & flexible giving the low weaselly appearance so typical of a good Dandie, if I were to be critical, I would say his owner perhaps slightly over-trims him for my taste, but has a jacket of the correct texture, I feel is not a glamour dog & may well be more a specialist’s Dandie than an all-rounder’s but when he gets going round the ring with his fluent, free & easy stride reaching in front & the impulsion from his powerful hindquarters is a joy to behold, I was pleased to award this very nice exhibit the CC, his 2nd, following three RCCs so hope his 3rd will not be too long in coming; 2 Tinsley’s Cloverwood Royal George, now here is all the glamour you could want in this Mustard, very eye-catching exhibit with good headpiece & very profuse topknot, dark eye, correct scissor bite, strong neck, good bone, very imaginatively trimmed & shows non-stop. I preferred the front extension & longer, more weaselly, body of 1, his sheer showmanship will gain him many awards, I’m sure. RCC; 3 Morris’ Cassencarrie Rumour Has It at Pennywave. MPB (2) Brookes’ Berdinbrook Tea Wynd, 9 months pepper with really sweet head & expression, nice neck & bone, in lovely quality coat, correct body shape, nicely balanced & sound moving, should do well as she matures; 2 Keevil & Bullock’s Yazga Turbulent Indigo, pepper, younger & therefore much less mature than 1, needs time, obviously, to come in head & body shape & coat, just a baby. PB (3) 1 Bromley’s Cassencarrie Going Back to Mishahda, I was just so delighted when I first saw this 91/2 months pepper come into the ring! such a promising youngster, in lovely coat for age both in quality & presentation, superb head & expression, correct muzzle & bite with good neck & outline, her owner told me she was at her first show – you would never have known as there was no sign of nerves or apprehension as was gone over on the table & then moved steadily round the ring, covering the ground so well, sympathetically handled, what a sweetie & one with a future in the show-ring, how proud her owner must be; 2 Miller’s Puddockswell Truly Dryfevalley, just 3 days separate these two puppies in age, mustard in really good coat & well presented, nice feminine head with good expression, shapely body properties, a really happy mover; 3 Kerrush’s Micklam Lemon Mousse. JB (2) 1 Marshall’s Dun Eideann First Edition, I have seen this gorgeous feminine 131/2 months pepper a few times from the ringside & am delighted at the way she is maturing, super breed type with a lovely headpiece, dark eye & correct bite, good neck, front assembly & the required body shape, spot on for quality & presentation of coat, her owner/handler gets the very best from her & her good construction allows the correct reaching front movement & powerful hind action, given a little time for maturity this one will trouble the best, was strongly in contention on the day; 2 Skitt & Marshall’s Dun Eideann Limited Edition, mustard litter sister to 1, does not shout quality as her sister does, has a pretty head & expression, nice outline & well balanced. Needs more ring confidence & to strengthen behind. PGB (4) 1 Shore’s Swanwillow She’s Hot, mustard, slightly larger type, beautiful headpiece with good dark eye, good muzzle, nice topknot & strong neck, correct body shape with good front movement & strong quarters, all of which allows her to cover the ground well, in quality coat of correct texture & well presented, well handled; 2 Sleight’s Cassencarrie Madelaina, mustard, very good head, eye & expression, good neck into nice shoulder placement, has body shape, but not the balance of length to height of 1. In well presented quality coat; 3 Smith’s Glendandy Twinkle Star. LB (9) 1 Heywood’s Cloverwood Day By Day at Schalulleke, I have admired this ultra feminine pepper from the ringside on several occasions & was not disappointed on going over her, such a lovely headpiece with dark eye, good muzzle & correct bite, good neck into a lovely front assembly with correct bone, combines the correct weaselly shape with elegance, super quality coat, such a good mover fore & aft but will sometimes lose concentration at the crucial moment, such as in the challenge where she was also well in contention, her day must surely come; 2 Kinsey-Morgan’s Inzievar Gold Effect, mustard, younger than 1, have admired from the ringside, such a good headed bitch with great expression, strong muzzle & bite, is particularly good in front assembly & reaches well on the move, super body shape with the desired balance of length to height, good qualities won her place in this strong class but I felt did not show her usual enthusiasm for the job; 3 Tinsley’s Cloverwood Sizzling Gold. OB (7) 1 Chapman-King & Hislop’s Inzievar Royal Silver, I remember listing all the many qualities of this outstanding pepper when I gave her BIS at her very first show as a puppy, now is 2 years & has fulfilled all the promise she showed then, & more! is a total gift to any judge from her super headpiece with wise, intelligent expressive eyes, correct muzzle & bite, topped with a luxuriant topknot to the tip of her correctly carried tail, so feminine throughout, but with strength in neck & shoulder, correct front, muscular, well boned forelegs & chest well developed & let down, body epitomises the line in the standard asking for length, strength & flexibility, has the classic Dandie shape covered in quality coat which has been expertly prepared, the icing on the cake is that she is also such a showgirl & in the challenge just owned the ring, I was pleased to award her her 3rd CC & made her BOB; 2 Russell’s Ch/Aust Ch Jollygaze Hopeless Romantic for Hawkesmill, mature pepper, lovely headpiece with expressive dark eyes, nice muzzle & correct bite, great body properties, long, low & weaselly as required by the standard, is beautifully prepared & trimmed, an elegant happy, sound moving showgirl, maturity won her the RCC despite the challenge by the promising younger bitches; 3 Morris’ Pennywave Amaryllis.
