DANDIE DINMONT CRUFTS 14 Dandie Dinmont Terrier Judge(s): MRS F M CHAPMAN-KING
DANDIE DINMONT JUDGE CRUFTS 14 Dandie Dinmont Terriers It was an honour & a privilege to judge my favourite breed at Crufts. The exhibitors were sporting & my stewards helpful & competent. I was looking for the Dandie essentials; the distinctive head, offsetting a long weasely shaped body, & covered with a crisp pencilled coat to combine ideal breed type with a low, sound driving gait, & Dandie temperament, is of course not easy. Not a great time of year for coats, & consequently perhaps, I found few exhibits with a full 2 inch pencilled coat, with the combination of three textures & colour called for in topknot, body coat & tail. This is an important breed point that impacts on both type & function. I was pleased with my principal CC winners, both displaying correct make & shape, & most typical in outlook. Overall bitches were stronger than the dogs, giving some close decisions here. My DCC winner came from the VD Class, Denham’s Ch Scottsbairn Duke Of Ross & he chased the younger bitch CC & BOB winner, Marshall’s Ch Dun Eideann First Edition all the way. A close call. VD (1) 1 Denham’s Ch Scottsbrairn Duke Of Ross, typical masculine pepper with distinctive head quality. Excellent strong skull & well domed forehead, deep muzzle, large teeth with perfect scissor, large nose & profuse clear top knot, all combining to give a quality masculine head. Good neck & layback, excellent deep ribbing & shapely topline, excellent body properties & proportion, good bone & well padded feet. Strong well muscled quarters which he used to good effect on the move, being sound all ways, & moving with purpose & style. Assertive in tail carriage, correct in set on. Shown in rather short coat which cost him in the final analysis, although texture is correct. Well deserved CC. PD (0). JD (1) 1 Doyle’s Dentgate Jackfrost at Ilexquercus, medium size mustard with very good head properties, typical liquid eye & correct big teeth & bite. OK in forehand & long enough in body, lacks body shape which spoils his outline. Moved better coming than going. Correct texture coat & of good length. PGD (6,3a) 1 Buckley’s Dentgate Celebration, promising pepper with a most pleasing head & outlook. Strong skull, correct stop & balance, good eye & strength of muzzle, correct bite. Pleasing length body & correct topline, well ribbed, good bone, strong well made quarters. Could be better in front, & moved better going than coming. Well handled & presented; 2 Buckley’s Florencemoon Meadowsun, mustard with a very good head, excellent expression & big nose. OK forehand, good topline & in good coat. Trimming makes him look a touch level, & could have more depth in rib to balance him. Moved out well on go around, could be more positive coming too; 3 Hayes & Harrod’s Etsill Rognvald. LD (5) 1 Edwards’ Cloverwood Midnight Blue, small but quality masculine pepper with a lovely head & expression. OK in forehand, correct body length & shape, OK in quarters. Shown in good coat & order. Moved the best in this class, & showed well; 2 Johnson’s Avonview Beinn Heasgarnich, larger pepper of pleasing overall make & shape. Very good muzzle, bite & nose, could perhaps have a touch more dome to forehead to balance. Excellent expression, enough layback, well ribbed, of good length & shapely body. OK in quarters. Super temperament & shown in a well presented crisp coat. Could move more soundly coming too; 3 Gregg’s Dariant Lui Vencedor Di Mi Soul at Bambusa. OD (4) 1 Kurg’s Ch Etsill Scapa Flow, medium sized, typical pepper with a masculine head & dark expressive eyes. OK in shoulder & quarters angulation – balanced & of pleasing length of body. Ribbed up & good topline, well off for bone & shown in good order. Moved out well on go around, could be more positive coming too. Showed well. RCC; 2 Bromley’s Mishahda Volcanic Storm, attractive masculine pepper with a strong head, pleasing eye & expression. Correct deep ribbing, shapely body, well off for bone, good feet. Quality well presented coat. Front movement let him down here. Up to size; 3 Marshall’s Ch Deegandan Dughall. GCD (1) 1 D Jackfrost at I. VB (5,2) 1 Denham’s Dentgate Serendipity, typical & quality workmanlike pepper of correct make & shape. Excellent layback, ribbing & body properties. Such balance, & sound all ways, with strong quarters giving a low driving gait. Could have a stronger skull, pleasing expression. Made her presence felt in the challenge; 2 Bromley’s Finloren Fantasia at Mishahda, mustard, slightly larger type. Correct strong head & pleasing expression. Ribbed up, good in body, shapely & in super order for her age; 3 Milliner’s Dengold Gypsy Moth at Millerim. PB (2) 1 Russell’s Hawkesmill Ishbelle, pepper with excellent head properties. Good in body & overall make & shape. Showed well; 2 Kurg’s Etsill Caol Ila, not quite the head properties of 1. Excellent body shape & low to ground. Well handled. JB (2) 1 Nice’s Cassencarrie Cleo Rose, mustard with a pleasing head & eye. Good forehand, topline & ribbing. In good coat. Moved & showed well. Up to size; 2 Allan’s Dalmuster Serene Princess, mustard with a good head & eye. Not quite the polish of 1 yet, & a touch overawed here. Good in body & low to ground. PGB (5) 1 Denham’s Dentgate Royal Jubilee, beautiful pepper with an excellent head & eye. Typical, & of pleasing overall make & shape. Excellent layback & clean outline, long & weasely. Showed well. Out of coat; 2 Kurg’s Etsill Skara Brae, smaller pepper, very feminine with a lovely head & eye. Pleasing forehand, good ribbing. Moved very well. Out of coat; 3 Drake’s Deegandan Bessie Surtees to Tollcross. LB (5) 1 Denham’s Dentgate Hollyberries, what a promising & typical young pepper with outstanding head properties. Feminine yet strong in bone & of good substance. Ribbed up, & pleasing topline & body. In pencilled coat of correct texture, colour & length. Super showgirl & sound all ways. Very close up in the challenge. One to watch; 2 Skitt & Marshall’s Duneideann Limited Edition, mustard in quality jacket & another with outstanding head properties. Typical overall, & pleasing topline. Not quite the angulation of 1. & unlucky to meet 1 in such good order; 3 Miller’s Puddockswell Moon Whisper at Dryfevalley. OB (3,1) 1 Marshall’s Ch Dun Eideann First Edition, typical, quality feminine pepper with excellent head properties, & dark expressive eyes. Good layback, well off for bone, padded feet, good deep ribbing, shapely body & topline. Not quite in full coat, but enough & of pleasing texture. Low to ground. Moved out well on go around. Could be a touch more positive behind. Showed & handled well. Mature & finished picture. CC & BOB; 2 Weatherstone & Heywood’s Ch Cloverwood Day By Day at Schalulleke, typical feminine pepper I have awarded top honours to before. Pleasing head & excellent expression, excellent layback & quarters angulation, flowing topline, ribbed up. Low to ground. Full coat of correct texture, rather solid in body colour. However no sparkle today & reluctant on the move, although accurate in footfall, not using her tail. When she returned to the ring for RCC challenge, upped her performance & moved out soundly with some animation to win RCC. GCB (1) A. F M CHAPMAN-KING |
