DANDIE DINMONT JUDGE CRUFTS 10

Dandie Dinmont Terriers
Thank you to the Crufts committee for the invitation to judge Dandie Dinmonts. It was an appointment that I was very much looking forward to & one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you also to the exhibitors for a lovely entry & how exciting to see so many overseas dogs present which really made for hot competition in the open classes.
Open dog in particular was just a sight to behold & must be one of the best classes of Dandie Dinmonts there has been. It is certainly the best class of Dandies I have ever judged.
Generally, I felt that heads could do with some improvement. Too many were long in foreface. Fronts too were a problem & this surprised me as so often with the Dandie it is the rear which has presented the challenges. Overall, coats were good with enough crisp coats for me not to be concerned. Presentation varied quite a lot. There were enough with correct proportions & the lovely Dandie outline. As always there were some that flattened a little in topline & some that were just too exaggerated over the loin.

VD (4,1a)

1 Mannia’s Finloren The Lion In Winter at Kirskill, nicely presented mustard dog & good to see him again, well handled & looking really well. Moved well behind, not so good in front. Touch long in foreface. Good outline;

2 Hows’ Kuddlemee Gershwin, more compact dog, beautifully headed with correct head proportions, good crisp coat. Not as free moving as 1;

3 Milliner’s Zanneus Zachary of Millerim, not as good a coat as the first two & a bit sluggish, but certainly not disgraced.

PD (1)

1 Hunter’s Etsill Scapa Flow, nicely grown youngster, super head with correct stop. Was flattening a bit in topline & a bit reluctant to go but a nice type & promising. Perked up a bit when he challenged the puppy bitch for BP.

JD (2)

1 Jacka-Slater’s Cassencarrie Robbie Burns, nice mustard dog, lovely outline both standing & moving, well presented. A touch long in foreface, front not his fortune but shows promise;

2 Gaffney’s Norfolk Haven Tigers Eye, nice type of youngster with a glorious head. OK in front, a touch flat in topline.

PGD (10) 1 Riach’s Puddockswell Gilded Imp, liked the head, outline & coat on this one. Was a touch sluggish but movement up & back was good. Won the class as he was typy;

2 Cox-Purcell’s Puddockswell Handsome Hector, really stylish young man, a touch longer but still presents a good outline. Profile movement really fluid but not as good up & back as 1;

3 Bullock & Keevil’s Yazga Love The One You’re With, young dog in good condition, lovely crisp coat. Just a touch long in foreface & was flattening a little in profile.

LD (11,3)

1 Tinsley’s Vistca Vian of Hendell, beautiful type of male, stunning head with absolute melting expression & liquid eye, coat still coming through but crisp enough. Is perhaps a touch exaggerated over the loin but that really is nit picking. Nice, sound moving dog, he is quality all through & is of clear ch grading, we shall hear more from him;

2 Denham’s Scottsbairn Duke Of Ross, really liked this dog, masculine & immediately takes your eye upon examination, nice outline, really good movement, presentation was excellent, condition of his coat was first class. Just a touch long in foreface & a bit proud of his tail but is still a top quality dog capable of doing some top winning;

3 Corless’ Dengold Enterprise, not disgraced to stand third behind the two above. Nicely presented & handled. Is a bigger sort but typy.

OD (10)

Super class of males with dogs down the line & not placed that could, in less tough competition win CCs or RCCs.

1 CC & BOB, Francis, Wolfskill & Greenway’s Am/Aus Ch Jollygaze Time Lord, absolutely stunning mustard dog who had my attention as soon as he entered the ring as he has sheer ring presence, presents a perfect outline with absolutely beautiful neck & shoulders which give him the stamp of quality, on the table stood up perfectly to examination as he is a lovely headed boy, the topline is absolutely spot on, beautifully fronted & his rear angulation & tailset are perfect, moves around the ring holding his correct outline at all times with style & purpose & his profile movement is absolutely eyecatching, he moves really true in front with some decent reach, he is clearly a big ring dog & I was delighted to see him take G2 where he had many admirers. Is certainly one of the best Dandies I have ever judged;

2 RCC, Deacon’s Ch/Am Ch Pennywise Burning Ambition for Cassencarrie, to put a dog of this quality second shows how strong this class was. Super outline, lovely headed boy, excellent show temperament, in lovely condition with correct crisp coat which was a lovely mustard colour, has an absolutely first class rear which is so difficult to get on a Dandie;

3 Macbeth & Johnston’s Am/Can Ch Gateway Sparks of Glahms, completed a stunning trio. In fact any of the first four in this class could have won a CC in most other competitions. Loved his head, really good front, good rear, good tailset, nice coat, beautiful trim, held his outline well on the move. Just tended to flatten in stance but that really is nit picking when writing about a dog of this quality.

GCD (1)

1 Norfolk Haven Tigers Eye.

VB (3,1)

1 Bromley’s Ch Mishahda Cinnamon Crumble, nice to see this one, an old favourite of mine whose has previously had a RCC from me, still looks well, well presented, pretty head, good outline & proportions, moved OK;

2 Bailey’s Stinchcombe Love In The Mist, not in her best bib & tucker but owner told me she had recently had a false pregnancy, so unfair to criticise.

PB (7)

1 RCC & BP, Chapman-King, Buist & Eriksson’s Inzievar Gold Touch, absolutely lovely type of bitch, really pretty head, lovely neck & shoulders, perfect outline which she held in stance & on the move, liked her attitude. A little short of coat but she had absolutely nothing to hide & is already knocking on the door for CCs. Certainly one to watch;

2 Harrington’s Venord Windcharm, good temperament. With a little more judicious trimming could be made to look even better. Nice to go over, moved OK, good attitude;

3 Hunter’s Etsill Inganess Bay, another with good attitude. Head a touch plainer than the two above her. Good proportions, moved OK.

JB (2)

1 Morris’ Pennywave Amaryllis, really pretty young girl, has had an exciting puppy career & I suspect will go on to do very well. Was just a bit in between at the moment. She stood up well to examination & moved well, good rear. With a little more maturity will certainly be one to watch;

2 Bird’s Etsill Shapinsay Sound with Birbrinda, looks the part, nice outline, pretty head. Was a bit sluggish against 1.

PGB (9,2)

Not an easy class to judge.

1 Fry’s Dentgate Confetti, won this class with a bit to spare, absolutely lovely type, just kept taking my eye whenever I looked at her. Moved a touch sluggishly but apart from that really liked her;

2 Osbourne’s Pitfirrane Silver Lady of Braego, good outline, good length of body. Nowhere near as good up & back as 1; 3 Hunter’s Puddockswell Hootin Annie at Etsill, nice up & back, nice coat. A bit flat in topline.

LB (11,4)

1 France’s Torbrae Daisy Dreamin, type & outline lovely, couldn’t help but notice her on first examination, really good head, excellent proportions. Is a bit head strong & possibly carrying a couple of pounds too much weight which pegged her in the challenge, but a quality bitch who is quite capable of gaining her title;

2 Danks’ Dawsholm Cantily Kate, absolutely sound with lovely attitude & kept taking my eye every time I went back to her. More workmanlike than 1 but really useful sort. Clearly capable of doing some winning;

3 Tinsley’s Cloverwood Razzberry Ice, when I first looked at the class I thought this one would be my winner. Absolutely bang on for type with the most beautiful melting expression, lovely outline & proportions. Unfortunately was not cooperating which pegged her. Another quite capable of gaining her title.

OB (9,2)

Plenty to go at in this class & it was quite close & tough competition.

1 CC, De Bakker’s Dutch Ch Waltzing Mathilda of Coquet Water, really pretty & very much the finished article, top quality bitch who came in to the ring meaning business, stunning head, lovely neck, shoulders & front with beautifully presented & correct pepper coat. Is a touch exaggerated over the loin but again that is nit picking. Lovely fluid profile movement. In fabulous condition & handled to get the very best out of her. She & the BOB made a quality pair when it came to the challenge;

2 Hastrup Holm’s Dan/Lux Ch Fairmac Janina De Fleur, really liked the outline & proportions of this young lady, both standing & moving. Not quite as glamorous as 1 but pushed her hard. When she came back to challenge for the RCC decided to play her owner up. She is real quality & certainly capable of adding titles to the one she already has;

3 Cameron’s Ch Inzievar Silver Bonnet, a bitch to whom I have previously awarded a CC. Looked a touch masculine against the others. Absolutely sound as a bell up back & round. Does have this tendency to be a bit uncooperative & unfortunately decided that was one of those days.

GCB (2)

1 Jarvis’ Mosterlada Shooting Star, placed fifth in the hotly contested open class. Nice mustard bitch in good coat.
Was just a touch sluggish but is quality; 2 S Love In The Mist.
