DANDIE DINMONT JUDGE BORDER UNION 11

Dandie Dinmont Terriers

It was a real pleasure to judge my favourite breed in the borders, the heart of Dandie country & thanks for bringing your lovely dogs. I was looking for the Dandie essentials of: the distinctive head, such an important breed point, large & strongly made with well domed forehead & low set dark expressive eyes; offsetting a unique topline – that elongated ‘S’ or weasel shape of soft curves; & all combined with a typical effortless driving gait in this short legged, long backed terrier – who is dignified, sensitive, intelligent, & persistent & determined by nature.

Achieving that combination of ideal type & soundness, is of course no easy matter.

PD (2)

1 Smith’s Glendandy Star Maker, medium size pepper with strong well developed skull for age, dark expressive eyes, correct large nose & profuse topknot, well bent stifles & well muscled quarters, good tailset & in fair coat. Touch upright in front & shorter in rib than ideal. A bit unsettled on the move. Well handled.

JD (1)

1 Hughes’ Maganbar Magic Moment, medium size mustard with very good head proportions & correct big nose giving typical pleasing outlook, good lay of shoulder & is long & low to the ground, in a quality jacket & has lovely self assured temperament. Moves better in front than behind, where he lacks a little in muscle tone perhaps & would like a more shapely topline. Promising youngster.

ND (0).

PGD (3)

1 MacPherson’s Dawsholm Wee Darick, pepper with strong skull & foreface, big nose & typical expression, good length of body & topline OK, low to ground & in good textured coat. Rather upright in shoulder. Moves better behind than in front;

2 Bedborough’s Hendell Crofter for Pitfirrane, pepper, good in head & has a better front than 1, however preferred 1’s quarters & overall balance. In good coat.

LD (4)

Good class.

1 Hunter’s Etsill Scapa Flow, typical pepper of good size & overall balance & proportions, good head & skull with correct low set fine ears & dark expressive eyes, fair forehand, good ribbing, topline & tailset & well muscled quarters. Well presented & in good coat & order, moved & showed very well. RCC;

2 Skitt & Jones’ Vistca Vincent, quality mustard with very good head that I preferred to 1’s, stronger skull, scores well in topline, ribbing & tailset & is of good size. Does not make the most of himself, a touch reluctant & did not move well behind, or with drive, which cost him here. Unlucky to meet 1 in such positive form;

3 Miller’s Puddockswell Moon Shadow at Fryfevalley.

OD (2)

1 Denham’s Scottsbairn Duke Of Ross, typical masculine pepper with distinctive head quality, excellent skull & well domed forehead, deep strongly made muzzle, well filled under eye, large teeth with prefect scissor, large nose & profuse topknot, all combining to give a distinctly quality masculine head, good neck & shoulder layback, excellent ribbing & shapely topline, of good length, straight legs & well padded feet, well muscled quarters, well presented & in good coat & order throughout. Assertive in tail carriage which can detract from the overall picture, however set on is correct & he is all male in carriage. Moved out soundly all ways with purpose & style. CC, I understand his 3rd. In the final analysis his strong breed points & all round soundness carried him through to BOB.

PB (4)

Really good class of promising puppies.

1 Denham’s Dentgate Summer Breeze, typical quality feminine pepper of good size who shows great promise, head of excellent proportions with well developed skull & dome particularly for age, lovely flowing lines from neck to clean well laid shoulders, correct topline & tailset, well ribbed & correct length of back. In an, albeit rather short, good textured coat. Moved out true all ways. I am told at her first show & seemed a touch overawed by it all & did not use her tail. Her obvious quality carried her to BP & RCC. When she gains confidence will surely trouble the best;

2 Rasmussen’s Dentgate Summer Sunrise, mustard of larger type than 1, pleasing head & excellent expression, good front & quarters, good length & balance. Carrying too much coat to her disadvantage. Moved out well;

3 Lowe’s Dentgate Summer Sunset. Trio of promising puppies.

JB (4)

1 Hughes’ Maganbar Apple Blossom, mustard with pleasing balanced head & eye, good length of back, good ribbing & correct topline, well muscled quarters & moved well. A touch immature as yet, just needs to finish & to fill out a little to complete the picture. Promising;

2 Heywood’s Cloverwood Day By Day at Schalulleke, pretty pepper with most pleasing feminine head & expression, good front, excellent length & body proportions, shapely & in good coat & order, overall a quality picture & more mature looking than 1. Just refused to cooperate at all on the move, persisted in ambling & ultimately had to pay the price here. Her day will come;

3 Cranson’s Hewbay Tinkers Girl.

NB (2)

1 Denham’s Kirkhalin Starlight Phoebe, typical pepper with strong head & skull & big nose, good layback, correct ribbing & of pleasing length. Could have better quarters & moving better in front. Well presented.

PGB (3)

1 Marshall’s Deegandan Lavender Of Dun Eideann, pepper with fair forehand, good ribbing, OK in topline & length of back, in fair coat & moved out well enough. Rather plain in head quality. Well handled.

LB (5)

1 Booth’s Cloverwood Candlelight, typy mustard of good size with pleasing feminine head & expression, well laid shoulders, fair ribbing & muscled quarters. Is shapely, needs a touch more length of back to finish the picture & would like a more animated style. Moved out well enough. In the challenge did not put all in & was sluggish on the move. Well presented & in good coat & order;

2 Hunter’s Etsill Inganess Bay, pepper with strong head, scores in length of back – which is better than 1. Preferred forehand & earset of 1. Moved out well enough.

OB (4)

1 Tinsley’s Ch Cloverwood Lemon Drizzle, typical feminine mustard, exuding confidence & ring presence, feminine head with enough skull, would prefer more dome to forehead & preferred the RCC winner here & in expression. Short muzzle, well filled foreface, low set ears & eyes, big nose & perfect scissor bite, enough neck & length of back, pleasing in topline & tailset, profile movement good & in coat of good texture & colour giving an overall typical picture. Would prefer more layback of shoulder & toeing-in a mite coming to. Makes the most of herself & showed nonstop to win CC;

2 Jarvis’ Mosterlad Shooting Star, mustard with good head & expression, fair front, good ribbing, topline & length of back, in good coat & moved out well, well handled;

3 Smith’s Somercloud Starprize at Glendandy.
