CESKY JUDGE CRUFTS 24

Sunday was the same day as the Oscars so it just has to be done: thank you to the Crufts Committee for the invitation; the stewards (shows couldn’t happen without you); the ringside for applause but most of all thanks must go to the exhibitors for entering. You drove all over the country last year to shows and then got up at some obscene hour to come to the NEC and me. Thank you all. Can a male judge do kiss, kiss now? It’s Oscar time so why not. Kiss, Kiss all. Now to the usual boring bit but actually it wasn’t. When a judge realises they are actually splitting hairs to make decisions and mentally listing contenders for top awards as they go through the classes something nice is happening. It’s a very overused word, nice, but an incredibly useful one at times and my head kept saying it again and again. It’s unusual, in my experience, to have more positives than negatives occurring via the hands and eye but the Crufts 2024 entry was a credit to the way the breed is improving…and then some. Of course, there were queries. Some ribs were deep rather than cylindrical and toplines varied. That last point has always been a bit of a bugbear in the breed but in an entry like this a tendency to stand a bit flat will be noted. My Best of Breed, Ives Des Bourdons Farouches WW21, was from Italy and from the moment he walked into the ring was a decent certainty to take the “Oscar” of Dog CC home. Presented to the nth degree, showmanship to die for, effortless movement with dog and handler in total accord. Maybe a tadge tall for ultra-purists but head, eye, neck, rib, rise over loin, tailset and carriage said he had the frame to match his outer glamour. Ch Janski Bugurovski came under me as a Junior in 2019 and took home the Res CC as he lacked just that edge against a fully mature dog. Today, as a fully mature dog himself with literally everything going for him, he just lost out on the go around so once again so Res CC. Bitch CC, the 8 years old Gayteckels Bottoms Up PDH, came from Veteran and nothing about her said “an oldie”. Pleasing head, good length, good ear set, dark eye, strong neck, good topline, strong rear, well-muscled. Beautifully handled. Janski Yamizzabl Witch, this is one exciting 17 monther. My thought of nice, as she entered the ring, turned to quality on going over her. Lost out on the CC for a tendency to flatten on the stand. A star in the making. Best Puppy, Dream of Daphne, enjoyed the NEC. In a breed that can be a bit overawed to have a baby, with a decent head and good enough movement-when it could be seen-says she will be fine with more age on her. Oscars are all about the outfits so to continue in that theme; presentation was generally very acceptable and some were downright brilliant but in a Cesky more is more isn’t good with the coat. The giant underbody skirts, super long beards and fluffy legs have basically gone but some would have benefitted from judicious use of thinning shears. Lots of hair behind the front legs makes for an appearance of out at elbow. Finally as an exhibitor you might not feel happy with the sparkle outfits of the Toy & Utility Group people but black trousers with dark grey Cesky doesn’t help the judge a lot when the dog is moving.

VD (1)

1 Ch Ashleyheaths Black Thunder ShCM ShCEx VW (England & Burrage). 10 year old, nice sized dog. Good outline standing but age is starting to tell a little with the topline on the move. Covers the ground with nice drive. Still a quality animal

JD (2)

1 Ridley Atticus (Halling & Atter). Very much at an in between stage with coat and balance. Quality head, dark eye, decent neck, topline slightly rising, 2 Winoski Aemond. Nice size. Good neck and ear. Did not settle but has potential. Muscled behind

PGD (4,1)

I Placido Proper Player (Goodwin). Nice looking dog with good backline, correct head, ear set and carriage, good muscle behind, would possibly benefit from faster moving out as his angulation says he should be able to drive more.

2 Winoski Aemond (Pearson) Settled far better in this class

3 Wherrypoint Engelbert (Weston) A lot to like but his (sometimes) flatter backline counted in this entry

LD (1)

1 Talyot Magnus to Silak (Samson) Nice head and eye, good proportions with excellent front, decent movement but tended to flatten a little.

OD (5)

Quite a class.

1 Ives Des Bourdons Farouches Ww21 (Emperatriz) Dog CC & BOB.

2 Ch Janski Bugurovski (Tobijanski) Res DCC.

3rd Janski Theodore by Runiks (Dukes & Rodgers) Nicely made dog, everything going for him with good outline and balance but bigger overall & not the quality of coat.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog (2)

1 Wherrypoint Dafydd Talyot (Richardson) Excellent shape, type and size, moved well coming and going. If judging in Europe, which we weren’t, would have been BD3.

2 Jsy Ch Idefix Day Break at Gayteckels Pdh (Mrs C V Marett) 10 year old who was having an absolute ball and there wasn’t anything his talented handler could do to stop his enthusiastic crabbing. A fun dog

VB (3)

A class that shows just how good Cesky are at a more mature age. Appreciation to three quality animals.

1 Gayteckels Bottoms Up Pdh (Marett) Bitch CC.

2 Ch Komidion Prima Donna of Sametova ShCEx (Burrage). Lovely bitch. Good head, dark eyes, neck into well laid shoulders, good bone, straight forelegs and well angulated hindquarters, movement was not her forte today.

3 Silak Shasgav My Immortal (Samson). Smaller bitch, balanced all through from nose to tail but movement could have been better

PB (1)

1 Dream of Daphne (Williams & Jackson) Best Puppy

JB (1)

1 Janski Yamizzabl Witch (Tobijanski) Reserve BCC.

PGB (2)

1 Silak Never Miss A Beat (Samson) Excellent size and balance. Good head, rib & topline. Skittish on the table but settled on the move

2 Adriana Caroline’s Dream (Boden) Bigger bitch. Nice head, well placed ear, good neck into shoulder, sound movement, topline not her fortune.

LB (7)

Good class

1 Placido Olympia (Williams & Jackson) Very eyecatching, totally sound. Head, ear, neck shoulder, topline, coat, very nice. Possibly a little wide in front. Moved well fore and aft. She was certainly on my list and then in the run off for Best Bitch decided moving out etc. was boring as she’d done it before so she’d plod.

2 Proxima Centauri (Pratt) Good head, ear, eye on a correct length neck. Shape and outline fine, if a little long. Didn’t cover the ground as one.

3 Janski Storm Padfoot (Tobijanski) Beautiful looking, beautifully presented, beautifully balanced and my hands said she hadn’t got a flat topline but that was what she wanted to present today and if a Cesky bitch makes her mind up.

OB (5,1)

1 Ch Placido Musical Miracle at Runiks (Dukes & Rodgers) Good outline, overall balance, head and type. Nice fore and aft, strong muscular hindquarters moved well.

2 Jsy Ch Gayteckels Musical Melody (Marett) Excellent for type that goes with a good moving, very fit, bitch with reach and drive.

3 Ch Komidion Prima Donna of Sametova ShCEx (Burrage)

Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bitch (1)

1 Gayteckels Sister Act Pdh (Marett). Yet another superbly conditioned animal from this kennel. Litter sister to Veteran Bitch and easy to see with many similarities but unlike her sister a “paddler” behind today rather than a driver.
