CAIRN JUDGE WELSH KENNEL CLUB 16

Cairn Terriers

It is with much pleasure that I send my thanks the WKC’s, officers & committee members, not just for their invitation to judge but also on the hospitality received; this certainly can never be bettered by any show. To the attending exhibitors & to those who entered but couldn’t make the trip on the day, I am most appreciative & send a grateful, thank you.

Entries these days are spoilt for several reasons, the absentees who having paid their entry fees have for some reason for not attended. Some know the faults in their dogs & believe the selected judge will do them no favours & do not enter. Also because of ongoing conflicts within the breed. One of which & having played no part or favoured either side, fills me with much sadness on their immaturity & lack of any consideration to the damage this is causing both within the sport & to the breed itself. Exhibitors gave me a good entry on paper & being a judge who only looks at dogs this pleased me. My only disappointment was the low entries in the puppy & junior classes & with stock in these classes being the future, the breed cannot survive & prosper without good numbers being in these classes. Still, it was an enjoyable day & I judged the dogs & placed them as my eyes & experience saw them, two could easily have dropped in their placing but it would have been harsh on either dog; when it was the owners’ presentation at fault. I will confess to looking forward to going over both a certain dog & a bitch, neither was there on the day. Would they have made a difference to my end result? Not having gone over either of them, I will never know. But the ones placed for the highest awards were all of an excellent quality & it gave me pleasure to pull them out. The BP was pulled out in the terrier puppy group but unfortunately was not placed. The BCC & BOB stayed for the terrier group & although she presented herself well, was not to the group judge’s liking.

MPD (3,2a)

1 Ball’s Lentrica Lets Dance at Calamondin, 7 months on the day a wheaten brindle with a decent head, nice eyes & neat dark ears. Well bodied for his age with a good outline, tailset, with a straight front & in good coat. At his age, no complaints with his front movement but found him to be a little erratic with his rear, this can be overcome. BPD.

PD (1)

1 Waugh’s Tribuns Licorice Coin at Tribannon, a dark brindle masculine puppy & at 11 months is well up to size. Good head with the correct ear placement & dark eye, good stop & mouth. Well bodied with deep ribs, level topline & straight front. Looks good standing but doesn’t move to the Standard which I’ve come to accept from this kennel.

JD (2,1)

1 Goud’s Vale Of Atholl’s Earl of Mansfield, a 14 month wheaten dog of a nice size with balanced proportions. Good head enhanced by dark points, scissor bite & dark eye. Level topline with good tailset. A little loose in front but still a promising youngster.

ND (1)

1 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Gold Sherdon, a light red dog having a decent head with the correct ear placing, nice reach of neck leading down to a level topline & good tailset. Not happy on the table or on the move. Perhaps, he would have been more comfortable with a few other dogs in the class for company.

PGD (5,1)

1 Keeves’ Seveek I Spied That Dream, a red masculine dog of a nice size & proportions with the correct medium bone; shown in a hard condition. Has an appealing head with a good expression, correct eye & a good mouth. A little skittish on the move & needs stronger handling but saw enough of his movement to see good reach & strong drive plus the correct space between his rear legs. A dog capable of doing a day’s work amongst the rocks. RCC;

2 Mears’ Glenmear Mcintyre, a light red brindle dog well up to size with good bone & nicely balanced. Excellent head with a nice dark eye, good stop, sound in mouth & a typical masculine expression. Good neck & shoulders, deep chest well ribbed, level topline & correct tailset. It was disappointing to find that, when put onto the floor; his movement didn’t meet my expectations;

3 Thompson’s Castleline Barn Dance.

LD (3,1)

1 Weinberger’s Correnie Hurricane Fly, a very appealing r/brindle dog with dark points, one I’ve admired from the ringside, excellent head with correct ear placing, a good stop, dark eye & required scissor bite. Everything fitted to the Standard by being to the required ‘medium’ – in bone, leg, neck & coupling. Well bodied with both depth & spring to rib. Level topline with correct tailset. A quality dog that was well handled & moved soundly. Would have liked a touch more coat to have completed the image;

2 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Winsford, a wheaten brindle dog with good head enhanced by his attractive dark mask & ears. Good reach of neck running down into a level topline with correct tailset. Shown in a good coat of a nice length; has well angulated & hard muscled rearquarters. Like the earlier dog from this kennel found it to be lacking in confidence on the table but then again it may not have liked the venue or perhaps, even the judge, whatever, it did not put in the performance which I’ve seen at other shows.

OD (3,2)

1 Kinton’s Woodthorpe I Know The Code, a quality gr/brindle dog of balanced proportions shown in a full double coat of good texture, sufficient bone & well bodied with good spring of rib. Excellent masculine head with an appealing expression, correct length of neck going down into good layback of shoulders, level topline & a good tailset. With strong drive from his rear, he still held his topline well on the move & with the ring to himself, put in a performance worthy of any CC winner. CC.

VB (1)

1 Melia’s Roachdee Treacle Bon Bon, a grey brindle bitch which one would doubt of being a veteran, she was so happy & lively. Has a very sweet head with small ears, bright eyes & a good mouth. Moved & showed well for her handler. BVB & BV.

MPB (3,1)

1 Firth’s Lentrica Black Star for Cairngold, at 7 months on the day, an attractive wheaten with a touch of brindle in her coat. Nice head with good stop, neat dark ears, correct eye & sound mouth. Good layback of shoulders, nicely bodied with level topline, correct coupling & a good tail set. Schooled & shown in good condition; she moved, holding her topline, soundly both ways. BPB & BP;

2 Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn at Gethlee, another very nice wheaten bitch puppy of 8 months; nice head with good stop, neat dark ears, correct eye & sound mouth. Nicely balanced with a good profile & slightly heavier coated than 1. But found her lacking in muscletone; this is as bad as being too fat – both indicates that a dog is not in show condition & with what could have been a close decision to make; she lost out.

JB (4)

1 Dolan’s Glenrood Burlesque, a wheaten brindle bitch shown in good coat. Strong head with trace of black mask, deep stop, dark eye & correct mouth. Nice flow from neck to tail, good layback of shoulders, straight front, nicely ribbed, with correct coupling & well angulated rear;

2 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Florey, a very nice wheaten bitch, which I liked very much but coat not at its best. Excellent head with black mask & ears, decent stop, dark eye & good mouth. Straight front with good shoulder placement, level topline, enough coupling & well set on tail. Moved & showed well;

3 Tompson’s Castleline Caladonian Lass.

NB (1)

1 Williams’ Seveek Country Sunset, a very well balanced red, so good for size & type, with excellent layback of shoulders, level topline, good tailset & shown in a good double coat. With the loss of a little weight she would be an even better prospect for the ring – her two siblings were both shown in hard condition & each gained a RCC.

GB (3)

1 Osborn’s Tweslam Gimme Gimme Magic, a light red bitch shown in a good quality coat, balanced outline with correct front assembly, good spring of rib, level topline & good tailset. Moved soundly & responded well to her handler;

2 Short’s Uniquecottage Gold Avill to Glenchess, a promising youngster of 14 months; nice type with balanced proportions & correct angulations, good head with attractive expression. Showed, today, that she was lacking a little in experience yet believe her to be one with a decent future before her;

3 Melia’s Roachdee Tickle Toffee.

PGB (3)

1 Osborn’s Tweslam Born To Bewitch, a light red with dark points shown in a good quality coat. Good head with deep stop, well placed ears, dark eye. Good layback of shoulders, ample neck, level topline, good spring of rib, correct coupling. Moved positively & at one with her handler;

2 Melia’s Carradine Minnies Magic, a dark brindle bitch of a nice size, decent head & good mouth, well bodied with good spring of rib, level topline & well set on tail. A steady mover & held her tail well;

3 Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Coco Chanel.

LB (9,3)

A very good class in which any one of four could have finished in first place under different judges.

1 Keeves’ Seveek Hopes ‘N’ Dreams, a red bitch of an excellent type & size & like her brother meets the three a’s – alert, agile & all there. Good head, stop, eye, mouth & expression. Shown in hard condition & with a coat of good texture, lively, yet moved soundly. RCC;

2 Clarke’s Lentrica Dolly Daydream, another which I have watched from the ringside & she didn’t disappoint me in any way. An appealing wheaten bitch with a lovely head with a delightful alert expression & constructed of balanced proportions. A delight to go over on the table & shown in a good coat & hard condition. Holds herself & her topline well on the move & does her handler proud;

3 Robinson’s Cruzo Capriole.

OB (8,1)

1 Dolan’s Glenrood Scheherazade, thank goodness it was easier to judge the bitch than to spell her name – took my eye in the introductory walk around the ring & a delight to have under one’s hands on at the table. Well constructed of balanced proportions & of a size which meets the Standard in height & weight; turned out in a good coat & in a superb condition. Possesses a super head with a lovely feminine expression created from the alert sparkle which is in her dark eyes. Covered the ground effortlessly & moved positively with good reach & drive. CC & BOB;

2 Robinson’s Ch Cruzo Corn Bunting, an appealing light red bitch of excellent quality & up to size, well worthy of her title. With its dark points, correctly positioned ears, dark eye & strong muzzle all going towards making for a very impressive head. Shown in a quality coat of good texture, well bodied with medium bone & good spring to her rib; she showed & moved positively for her handler;

3 Thomas’ Tycadno Morning Star.
