CAIRN JUDGE SOUTHERN COUNTIES 26

My thanks to all the exhibitors who entered under me at this show with their lovely cairns! I was very pleased to see that progress has been made in our Cairns since I last judged. On this occasion, I found all the cairns were of exceptional quality! They possessed better forechests, a feature that had been lacking in some of the exhibits I have judged previously. Movement has also become an area of concern in our breed, with some dogs moving too close behind or platting in front. It was pleasing to see an improvement in this respect among the exhibits present today, with many showing sounder and more positive movement. Overall, I felt the quality of the Cairns on the day was very high, and it was a pleasure to go over so many lovely cairns. Mouths, on the whole, were correct with good scissor bites, although some exhibits did have some jumbled teeth and a few could have benefited from cleaner teeth. Over the years, eye shape has become somewhat of a concern, with some dogs tending towards round eyes rather than the almond shape called for in the breed standard. I was therefore delighted to find that the exhibits under me had eyes of the correct shape and hazel colour, exactly as the standard requires. My two CC winners are outstanding examples of the breed and made my decision for Best of Breed extremely difficult. It was a very close contest between them, but on the day maturity just edged out youth. The Reserve CC winners were also lovely cairns and I'm sure will obtain their CC and become champions in their own right! BOB and BCC: Mrs Goldfinch, Kanawha Never Say Never. A six-year-old silver brindle bitch who showed exceptionally well, despite the heat. She has every thing I look for in a cairn terrier! She is the daughter of my Champion Veteran Bitch and possesses that lovely Cairn head with dark points that is so difficult to put into words. She has a good fore chest allowing her to stand well forward, very much my type of Cairn. Correct ear set, deep stop, almond-shaped, hazel eyes, correct bite and clean teeth all were a part of her appeal. Her coat was a tight double coat, soft hair close to the skin and the guard hairs harsh, as it should be. Her length of neck flowed into well-laid shoulders, with correct angulation both front and rear. Her topline remained level on the move, and her tail well set and carried well! She moved soundly and true, exactly as it should be. She is one lovely cairn! It was a very close decision between her and the Dog CC winner for Best of Breed, but her quality simply could not be overlooked on the day. RBOB and DCC. Hiam & Harrison Carradine Kiss My Ace. A 15 month dark brindle dog, winner from the Limit class, caught my eye as soon as he walked in the ring, full of himself! Has a lovely cairny head and is full of character. Has the correct shaped eyes and hazel colour, deep stop and well set ears. Correct mouth and large teeth. Good length of neck into sloping shoulders. Topline spot on and tail set bang on! Moved well as his conformation said he would. He should do well in the show ring! RBCC was Waugh Tribannon Angel's Kiss. RBCC. A dark silver brindle bitch another who looked like she owned the class! I liked her very much. Has a lovely head with dark eye and correct mouth. My winner out of the Limit Bitch class. Deserved this award today RBCC. RDCC was Lucas & Tobutt, Carradine Sir Percival. 20 month old red brindle cairn. Has a lovely head with the desirable dark points. Showed so well today despite the heat. In full coat and looked a picture! Another worthy winner today! Best Puppy in Breed: Rogers, Copseleaze Midnight. 7 month dark brindle. Loved his head and expression. A very nice puppy overall. Won this award as was better behaved as well as being a very nice puppy. I was surprised that there were no Veteran Dogs entered at the show, which was a real shame. It is so important to see how a Cairn progresses and develops into its later years, as longevity of type and soundness are such valuable qualities in the breed. PD. (2,0) Two very nice puppies that will change places as they both mature! 1.BP Rogers, Copseleaze Midnight. 7 month dark brindle. Loved his head and expression, deep stop and mouth OK. Good depth of chest and a fore chest that enables him to stand well forward. Moved well which won him this class. 2. Miss Smith. Cloverbrook Pol Roger Of Gethlee. Another seven month old cream brindle with dark points and a good head. Nicely made and just slightly bigger than 1. There was very little to choose between these two youngsters, but on the day the first-placed exhibit was just that little bit better behaved! 2 Cloverbrook Pol Roger of Gethlee (Smith) 3 Cloverbrook Pol Roger of Gethlee (Smith) JD (1,0). Just one in this class! 1.Rose & Harrison Carradine Little Bird. Just one year old very nice red dog with dark points, lovely to see the dark points as they really set the head off! In full, double coat. He has a good mouth and correct bite, deep stop and cairny expression. Good length of neck into flowing shoulders. Level topline held on the move. Movement was good both away from me and coming towards me as his conformation dictated he would. LD. (3,0) Three lovely dogs to choose from! 1.DCC & RBOB. Hiam & Harrison Carradine Kiss My Ace. What a lovely picture of a cairn! He walked in as if he owned the ring which he did! As well as all his lovely cairn attributes, he won this class on movement. I liked him very much! Won his first CC today and deserved it! 2. Morley. Kanawha Spy Man. Brother to my BCC. A 6.5 year old dark brindle, more mature than 1st. He has a lovely Cairn head, deep stop and correct eyes. Level topline which he kept on the move, moved well. I liked him very much. Such a shame to meet the winner of this class! 3. Thomas & Jones Tycadno New Tricks. OD. (3,1) Two lovely cairns in this class who will change places at another show. 1. RDCC. Lucas & Tobutt, Carradine Sir Percival. 20 month old red cairn. Has a lovely head with the desirable dark points. Has a good stop, dark eye of correct shape. Slightly smaller than 1st but that didn't go against him. He moved well as his conformation showed he would. Won on showmanship! 2. Morley. Kanawha Spy Man. 2nd in Limit as well as the Open class today. Decided he had had enough today! I liked him. SB (2,0) 1. Rogers, Copseleaze Midnight. BP. 1st in Puppy dog. A very nice 7 month puppy dog.. Has everything in his favour making a lovely cairn to win Best Special Beginner as well as BPIB! 2. Miss Brooks Carradine Slice Slice Baby. 16 month bitch. Not the head of 1st, needs more head furnishings. Good coat but just didn't want to show VB. (2,0) 1 Goldfinch Ch. Tycadno Bright Star For Kanawha BV. A nine-year-old dark brindle bitch. She is another beautiful bitch with a lovely Cairn head. She has a correct mouth with sound teeth, a good stop and dark eyes. She moved so well, a very worthy Champion and one I admire greatly. I later discovered that she is the dam of my Bitch CC and Best of Breed winner. Her son was placed second in both Limit Dog and Open Dog. What a tremendously successful day for the breeders. 2 Smith. Cannwood Miisty Dawn At Gethlee. Ten and a half year old lovely cream with a beautiful head and good general outline. Lost out to 1st as mouth not as good nor was her movement! Not bad for 10 years plus! PB. (2,0). Two lovely puppies but it was difficult to assess the movement of these two as they didn't want to cooperate with their handlers. Just puppy fun! 1. Smith's Cloverbrook Moet N'Chandon of Gethlee. A seven-month old dark brindle puppy. Has a better head of the two and a good, correct mouth. Still very much a baby and at the beginning of her development, with plenty of time to mature and fulfil her potential. 2. Gardner. Look To The Future with Aberforth. Another seven month old puppy, this time red in colour. A very sweet youngster who is currently a little rawer in development than the winner and will benefit with time to mature and come into herself. On the move she was not quite as positive as 1 today, but she has plenty of time on her side. JB. (4,1) Two very nice puppies 1.Hiam & Harrison Carradine Boozy Suzy. A 12 month dark brindle. She has a sweet cairn head, dark eye, good stop and correct mouth. A very nice outline, standing well forward as she too has a fore chest! She won on movement and a better head but needs more furnishings and to mature further! 2. Gardner Lentrica New Beginnings For Aberforth. Still very much a baby at 7 months. I had difficulty assessing her movement but what I managed to see was good, needs her head furnishing to complete the picture. 3 Brooks Caradine Slice Slice Baby. PGB (5,1) A very nice entry. 1. Waugh. Tribannon Nancy Lou. A cream bitch but sadly without those lovely dark points. Has a lovely cairn head ear set good, has a dark eye, correctly shape eye and a deep stop. Correct mouth and bite. Level topline with tail bang on. In full coat. Her head and positive movement gave her 1st place in this class 2. Bingham & Stokes. Carradine Miss Hayley. Silver bitch with a good head but needs more head furnishings. Has a deep stop, dark eye and correct mouth and bite. Level topline and tail set OK. In full coat of correct texture. Moved well. 3. Thompson. Castleline Cariad LB. (6,0)This was a lovely class to judge with some difficult decisions to be made. I am sure all will change places at different shows! 1. Waugh Tribannon Angel's Kiss. RBCC. A dark silver brindle bitch. Another who looked like she owned the class! I liked her very much. Has a lovely head with dark eye and correct mouth. Nice length of neck into sloping shoulders. Correct angulations both front and back enabled her to move correctly driving from behind which decided her 1st place in this class. She was unlucky to meet the BCC winner! RBCC. 2. Osborn Be Gin Again At Tweslam. Another dark silver with a lovely head and dark eyes, deep stop, correct mouth and bite. Her angulation meant she moved very well. A close decision between these two a lovely typy cairn. 3. Clarke. Furythor Born to Sparkle by Lentrica. OB. (4,1) Three lovely bitches in this class. Thank you to their owners for allowing me to go over them. 1. BOB and BCC: Goldfinch, Kanawha Never Say Never. An outstanding six-year-old silver brindle bitch. Has everything desired in a cairn, lovely head and confirmation. She showed exceptionally well despite the heat. BCC. 2. Hartopp, Carradine Hazel Moon. Red brindle with dark points so an attractive head with deep stop and good mouth. Level topline and tail spot on. Moved and showed well. A lovely cairn who should do well. 3. Osborne. Tweslam Be Gin the Magic
