CAIRN SKC AUGUST 11 Judge(s) MRS J M FAIRWEATHER DCC CH LANDBUCK TILLISCH (MR A & MR R A FELTERS & RUMENS) Scottish Kennel Club Championship show 28th August 2011 Cairn Terrier Judge: Jennie Fairweather (Ock) I would like to thank the SKC for inviting me to judge Cairns and for a very enjoyable time. They certainly treated me very well making me feel at home. There was some lovely cairns to go over which gave me hope for the future of our breed, thank you for allowing me to go over your cairns and for being so sporting with my placings. The weather on Sunday was very windy causing the tent to flap a bit which upset a few cairns for which I made allowances. On a general note, I found a couple of cairns with level bites, some with light eyes and others with narrow muzzles. Some cairns were carrying too much weight which spoilt their outline and movement. Movement on the whole was good but I did notice some pinning as the cairns moved towards me as well as some moving very close behind. As breeders we need to pay attention to these faults creeping into our breeding stock as it is very hard to breed these faults out. It was a pleasure to feel cairns with forechests. Judging from the ringside I have noticed that there are a lot of cairns lacking in forechest. The breed standard does say Cairns should be “standing well forward on forepaws”. Lack of forechest can be due to the upper arm being too upright, we don’t want cairns to end up looking like Fox terriers! Have noticed from the ring side, that ribs in some cairns are more like those in Border Terriers! So, it was nice to feel and see the correct depth of rib in most of the exhibits today as this is essential to house the heart and lungs. I was very pleased with my winners as I think they are all a tremendous credit to our breed. On another day they may change places. My BOB and BCC Miss Y Catto’s CH Birselaw Any Dream Will Do, such a lovely bitch who just oozes quality. She was pulled out in the terrier group later that afternoon. The RBCC was Mrs EB and Mr I Shaw’s Honeyhall High N Dry. A smaller size cairn but her quality and showmanship could not be overlooked today. She showed well and is a credit to her breeders and handler. The DCC and BOS was Mr A & Mr R Felters & Rumens CH Landbuck Tillisch. I loved him as a puppy and he has really matured into a lovely cairn. The decision for BOB was a difficult one and I was splitting hairs over these two cairns, but the bitch was just a better showgirl today. My RDCC, Mrs C Templeton Larchlea I Want To Break Free who is another superb example of our breed. When he walked into the ring I thought he would be my DCC winner and on going over him it confirmed my opinion. In my choice for the DCC I decided that maturity should win the DCC but was pleased to award him the RCC. I am sure his time will come and will follow his career closely. Best Puppy in Breed was Miss B & Mr D Shannon & Storr Brendarcy Snedronningen. This puppy is just 9 months old and is such a lovely one with such a cheeky expression, I just fell in love with her! Minor Puppy D (1,0) 1 Buttifant’s Orkneyviking Magnus. BPD 7 month old light red brindle, raw and rangy puppy. I thought he was a very nice, balanced cairn who is short of coat but what is coming through is of the correct texture. A good head, stop and dark eye, correct mouth and bite. His movement was difficult to asses as he was so full of energy. I suggest he goes to ring craft classes and learns to settle a little. Should mature into a very nice cairn. 1 Ms J & Mr B Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Renshaw There and Back Again. A dark brindle, one year old balanced dog with lots to like about him. Another with a good head and mouth, level topline and correct tailset. His front movement was a little loose today. Not too keen to show. Junior D (3,1) 1. Templeton’s Larchlea I Want To Break Free. RDCC. A dark brindle, balanced, masculine dog with a beautiful head, good stop, dark eye and correct mouth. He has a good front and correct spring of rib, level topline which he held on the move. He moved with drive as his angulation and conformation indicated he would do so. I thought him an outstanding dog today. In the challenge for the DCC his immaturity lost him the DCC but I could not refuse him the RDCC. His turn will not be long in coming! 2. Lattimer’s Birselaw Sir Bobby. A very nice light brindle dog with a good head. He has a forechest and depth of rib and is nicely put together. Moved correctly, in between coats. 3. Fortune’s Eglish Spitting Image with Essdeeeff Yearling D (3,0) 1 Cameron’s Stryveling Rocket Man. A lovely red male with those desirable dark points and a lovely head. Standing well forward over his front paws, has correct depth of rib. Tail set OK, slightly long in back, moved with drive. Coat not at its best but the new coat coming through was of correct texture. Post Grad D (4, 0) 1 Buchan’s Auchinkyle Superman Stan At Drayem. Red brindle, balanced male with a nice head. Moved OK but was upset by the wind and flying his ears so not at his best today. 1 Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Trouble At Mill. A very nice dark brindle male with a lovely head, balanced and a lovely profile on standing. I considered him in the challenge but he was not showing as well as I have previously seen him. His showmanship let him down in the challenge but he won this class on his movement driving from the rear as his conformation indicated he would do so. 1 Felters & Rumen’ss CH Landbuck Tillisch. A most beautiful balanced red dog with a lovely head and dark points. He has correct eye shape and a dark eye, good stop, strong muzzle and correct mouth. With his correct angulation he stood well forward over the front paws and has correct spring of rib. His conformation was correct enabling him to move with drive from the rear. Standing he looked a picture, I liked everything about him and it was a privilege to be allowed to go over him. He has certainly matured into a lovely dog. His maturity won him the DCC today, a very worthy Champion! 1 Shannon & Storr’s Brendarcy Snedronningen. BPB and BPIB. This 9 month old puppy is a natural showgirl, the windy tent not phasing her in the least. She is a balanced, cream with a beautiful head, correct mouth and dark mischievous eyes. Her conformation and outline is very good. She gave her handler a hard time and made movement difficult to assess. In the challenge for BPIB she pulled out all the stops to go Best Puppy Bitch and then Best Puppy In Breed. She should have a good future. 1. Kinchin’s Carradine Ruby Tuesday At Pennidazzle. This was a light brindle, rangy puppy, lacking head furnishings and short of coat. The new coat coming through is of the correct texture. She moved OK. She needs time to mature and also needs to lose a little weight. Junior B (2, 1) 1 Buchan’s Carradine Little Cracker At Drayem. A dark brindle bitch. Today she was lacking head furnishings and her eye colour is a little light for me. She has a good stop and correct mouth. She moved well, just needs time to mature. 1 Shaw’s Honeyhall High N Dry. A most appealing, beautiful cream with bitch, a lovely head with dark points, dark mischievous eyes and a good stop. She is a smaller size cairn, balanced with a pleasing outline. She moved with drive around the ring and was in tune with her handler the whole time. Her showmanship won her this class and the RBCC. 1 Smith’s Anjofra Plum Tart At Rocasovale. Another very nice red brindle bitch with dark points. She has a lovely head and a very nice outline on standing. A good depth of rib. She too gave her handler a hard time but once settled she moved well. She could do with losing a little weight. In the challenge for the RCC, she threw her chance away by not co-operating at all with her handler. 1 Owen’s Honeyhall Handful at Caldwall. Dark brindle bitch, a very good head and dark eye, good reach of neck into correct shoulder placement. Level topline and tail set OK. A good outline on standing and showed well. I felt the handler would get more out of her if he were to relax the lead when moving her. Today she moved a little close behind. 1 Catto’s Ch Bireslaw Any Dream Will Do. BB and BOB. A most beautiful balanced cream bitch with a gorgeous cairn head and desirable dark points. She is a worthy Champion, standing she just shouted quality! Good depth of rib and forechest. Correct tail set and she held her topline on the move. Her correct angulation was seen by her driving, true movement around the ring. Although a larger sized bitch, there was nothing I could fault, she is balanced and has a lovely outline and could not be denied the BCC and finally BOB. It was a pleasure to go over her. I was so pleased to see she was pulled out in the group. Judge: Jennie Fairweather |
