In many classes the decisions were very close and I’d wished that I had more CC’s and red cards as many of the exhibits were worthy of being Champions. Since I last judged the breed I felt conformation and movement had generally improved. Of course, you always get the occasional example of poor movement, weak head, lack of coat and upright shoulders and rear ends. The standard is not prescriptive and allows one to select a Cairn that is a workmanlike example and a quality specimen. PD. (3,0): 1. Wall’s Cloverbrook Ray of Sunshine over Shearwater. A well-balanced dog presenting a smart outline. A lovely head and expression with good length of neck running into well placed shoulders. Level topline and good tailset. Moved well both fore and aft and should improve even further as he matures. 2. Shannon and Storr’s Brenndarcy Trouble at Mill, a wheaten brindle with equally good conformation as 1, level topline, good tailset and nice front and shoulders. Moved well but preferred 1 on the day. 3. Miller’s Birselaw Badger’s Dream for Cornton. JD. (4,0): A high quality class. 1. Downie and Tate’s Jaeva Face the Music. A lovely dark masked face giving a typical varmity cairn expression. Good neck and shoulders, level topline and correct tailset. Well presented with good quality coat, moved well with drive. 2. Catto’s Birselaw Follow Your Dream. Another good example of a typical cairn in expression and outline. A strong head, level topline both static and on the move. Moved and showed well. 3. Firth and Jones’s Cairngold Spin of the Wheel. PGD. (8,3): 1 and RDCC. Inett and Harrison’s Noncom Inett Tu Winnit with Carradine. Have liked this dog for a little while particularly his conformation and movement. A good masculine head, good length of neck and nice layback of shoulders. Level top, correct tailset. He just flows around the ring with purpose and drive. 2. Smith’s Rocasovale Razzle Dazzle. Darker and slightly larger than 1, but still a well-balanced quality dog. Has a super head with good stop and width of of skull and neat ears. Shows an excellent outline, level top and good bend of stifle. A good mover, but not quite as flowing as 1. 3. Felter’s and Rumen’s Landbuck Colour Code. LD. (2,0): 1. Templeton’s Time to Entertain. A top quality dog of typical type and excellent balance. Has a good head and expression with correctly shaped dark eyes. Good length of neck, level topline and correct tailset. Moved well with impressive drive. 2. King and Leighton’s Carradine Maybe the Moon at Harkinleigh. Lighter in colour than 1 with dark points and slightly shorter in leg. Well presented, with a good outline from head to tail, but needs a better coat to gain top honours. Moved and showed well. OD. (3,0): A class of quality. 1. DCC and BOB. Pollock’s Larchlea Licence To Thrill at Stanedykes. A wonderful example of the breed. A good size for a male with a strong head, broad muzzle, good stop, lovely dark well-shaped eyes and correct ear placement. Good length of neck, nice shoulders and firm rib cage. Carries a level topline with good tailset and nice bend of stifle. All this provides a flowing movement with plenty of drive deserving his top award. 2. Cameron’s Stryveling Robb Ruadh. A lovely red dog with dark points. A firm all-round build and size. He has all the good points of conformation in head, body and legs and gave 1 a run for his money, but lost out on showmanship. 3. King and Leighton’s Carradine Night Listener at Harkinleigh. PB. (5,1): 1 and BP Templeton’s Larchlea Can’t Remember. A lovely dark brindle bitch with a wonderful dark cheeky facial expression. A good feminine head with perfect mouth and stop. Good length of neck, correct shoulder placement and well shaped rib cage. Level topline and good tailset presenting a well-balanced outline. Moved and showed well, although strongly challenged by the dog for best puppy. 2. Downie’s Larchlea Come Away With Me. A very similar type to 1, but not so strong in head and body. A well proportioned bitch who moved and showed well and has time to mature and develop. 3. Berrecloth’s Sybster Sonja. JB. (7,0): This was a strong quality class and a pleasure to judge. 1. Catto’s Birselaw Bewitched. A beautifully balanced bitch with a lovely head and expression. A good length of neck running into a perfect topline. She had a well proportioned body set on a nice straight front and correctly angled rear legs giving a stunning outline. She could have done better in her performance if she had behaved herself on the move. 2. Shannon and Storr’s Brenndarcy Button It. Another quality specimen with a very pleasing outline. A lovely feminine head with good strong teeth and nice ear placement. A little broader and shorter than 1 but moved and showed well. 3.Bradshaw’s Newfield Dawn Spirit. GB. (5,2): 1 Felter’s and Rumen’s Landbuck Jazz Hands. This was a bitch with a particularly feminine type all round both in head and body. A pretty head with dark points. Good length of neck, straight front, level topline and correct tailset. She was handled well and excelled on the move. 2. Cameron’s Pinetop Game Set n’ Match at Stryveling. A well proportioned red bitch with good head and typical expression. Presented a pleasant outline with level top and good bend of stifle. Not quite so expressive as 1 on the move which detracted from her performance. 3. Bradshaw’s Newfield Heather Magic. LB. (3,0): 1 and BCC Shaw’s Honeyhall Hide n’Seek. A wonderful feminine example of the breed, especially her head. A neck to die for and a level topline set on legs that are correctly angled to provide excellent movement and drive. Immaculately turned out and shows all out for her handler giving her the well deserved third CC. 2. Wrenn’s Larchlea Light My Fire. A very pleasing bitch with a well-balanced outline. A good head, body and legs, which I very much liked. However, she just didn’t move as well as 1. 3. Dawson’s Sybster Summer Nights. OB. (3,0): A quality class of bitches. 1 and RBCC Inett, Harrison and Clayton’s Carradine Magic Star. I liked this bitch very much because she was well presented and put on a good performance. A lovely strong broad muzzled head with good stop, nice dark eyes and neat ears. A beautiful neck leading into correctly laid back shoulders and level topline. A good tailset and bend of stifle, which helped her, flow round the ring with drive. 2. Munday’s Ch. Birselaw Firebird of Stradivarius. Another lovely bitch with good feminine head and a pleasing outline. Gave 1 a close run fight for first place, but lost out on movement and showmanship. 3. Firth and Jones’s Cairngold Candlelight. The Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show 16 May 2009

It was an honour to be invited to judge Cairns at Ingliston and although numerically the numbers were not large, the quality in general was of a high standard. In many classes the decisions were very close and I’d wished that I had more
CC’s and red cards as many of the exhibits were worthy of being Champions.

Since I last judged the breed I felt conformation and movement had generally improved. Of course, you always get the occasional example of poor movement, weak head, lack of coat and upright shoulders and rear ends. The standard is not prescriptive and allows one to select a Cairn that is a workmanlike example and a quality specimen.

PD. (3,0):

1. Wall’s Cloverbrook Ray of Sunshine over Shearwater. A well-balanced dog presenting a smart outline. A lovely head and expression with good length of neck running into well placed shoulders. Level topline and good tailset. Moved well both fore and aft and should improve even further as he matures.

2. Shannon and Storr’s Brenndarcy Trouble at Mill, a wheaten brindle with equally good conformation as 1, level topline, good tailset and nice front and shoulders. Moved well but preferred 1 on the day.

3. Miller’s Birselaw Badger’s Dream for Cornton.

JD. (4,0):

A high quality class.

1. Downie and Tate’s Jaeva Face the Music. A lovely dark masked face giving a typical varmity cairn expression. Good neck and shoulders, level topline and correct tailset. Well presented with good quality coat, moved well with drive.

2. Catto’s Birselaw Follow Your Dream. Another good example of a typical cairn in expression and outline. A strong head, level topline both static and on the move. Moved and showed well.

3. Firth and Jones’s Cairngold Spin of the Wheel.

PGD. (8,3):

1 and RDCC. Inett and Harrison’s Noncom Inett Tu Winnit with Carradine. Have liked this dog for a little while particularly his conformation and movement. A good masculine head, good length of neck and nice layback of shoulders. Level top, correct tailset. He just flows around the ring with purpose and drive.
