CAIRN PAIGNTON 11 Judge: Mrs Mary Middlehurst CAIRN JUDGE PAIGNTON 11 What is becoming the norm at far distant venues a small entry awaited me. I thank the exhibitors for their entries and giving me the honour of judging their cairns. I have great concern that we continue to lose the qualities of what the Cairn Terrier should represent as our breed standard sets, not only in the males but today I found this creeping into some of the bitch classes. The lower classes in both sexes was disappointing. The true Cairn head and expression was hard to find. Variation in size, type, unsound conformation, heavy shoulders and excess weight, together with lack or incorrect exercise can give rise to poor movement, which was much in evidence today. On the plus side dentition has improved as had presentation, no signs of aggressive behaviour but a couple of the exhibits were overawed by the noise and atmosphere of the hall. As caretakers of our breed we need to take urgent action before it is too late. Novice exhibitors should have the opportunity to observe and examine a top quality Cairn presented in top show condition and with the supervision and guidance of an unbiased mentor this would help them along the way and inspire them in their dream of making progress in the planning of their cairn’s future. MPD no entries PD 2 1st Fyfe’s Andrum Hawkeye,10 mth wheaten cream well up to size with strong masculine head and deep stop, in between coats. Moves with drive. 2nd Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Renshaw There And Back Again,10 mth G/B smaller model than winner with attractive head, dark inquisitive eyes and neat well set ears, body in proportion to size, coat on the blow. Would benefit from losing a little weight. Holds his top line well on the move and standing. JD 3 (1abs) 1st Newton’s Strathinver Specification,11mth wheaten with dark points, up to size, masculine head good stop and correct dentition. Needs to settle and tighten in front movement. 2nd, Keeves & Bennett’s Seveek Who Dares Wins, R/B different type to winner, maturing nicely, liked his head with dark eyes and neat ears, level top line with tail bang on top all held together in profile moving and standing. Movement needs to settle fore and aft. PGD 3 1st Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Jumbuck, wheaten up to size masculine dog, head of equilateral proportions well set on ears and dark eye. Beneath his perfuse coat I found a well constructed body with clean shoulders and good angulations front and rear. Nicely presented in top show condition with well muscled quarters. Gave his handler a hard time and was difficult to assess but I did observe the true parallel free and sound movement that a cairn should have as his conformation and condition suggested. This is what won him the RCC today. 2nd Goud’s Vale Of Athol’s Shaggy Grey Buck, wheaten with an attractive head and dark points, smaller in structure and more compact, level top line nicely presented in full coat. Preferred the more masculine outlook of winner. 3rd Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Fable, LD 4 1st Thompson’s Castleline Bang On The Door, w/b medium sized dog with attractive head and dark points, deep stop and dark eye, stood well forward on forepaws. Coat on the short side but of good texture, seemed a bit lethargic today which reflected in his movement and general well being which cost him top honours. 2nd Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Rayleigh, g/b pleasing head, well constructed dog in full coat shown in good condition and well presented preferred the head of winner today. 3rd,Marshall’s Strathgarten Crackerjack. OD 2 1st Weinberger’s Ch Larchlea Come Fly With Me To Correnie, Upstanding g/b showing his many attributes, correct head with dark eye and desirable wistful expression, neckline flowing into good shoulder placement with level top line. Fully coated and presented in top show condition, moved freely around the ring making his presence felt, pleased to award him the CC. 2nd Morley’s Kedvaiy Locamotion, R/B medium sized, more compact than winner attractive masculine head with darker mask and ears, correct bite and deep stop. Stands well forward holding a good profile. Close fitting harsh jacket on the short side. Movement steady. MPB No entries. PB 1 1st Thompson’s Castleline Peggy Sue, 11mth cream very pretty ultra feminine bitch with a true cairn head and expression dark mischievous eye, everything just how it should be at this age. New coat starting to come in, happy show girl. B/P. J/B 5 Disappointing class. 1st Newton’s Strathiver Starturn, still a puppy, cream attractive head with dark points, well bodied in good coat, movement needs to improve but it was the best in the class. 2nd Day’s Trekhilli Beanie Baby, G/B just out of puppy, much rangier and leggier than winner, pretty head with good stop. Not very happy in her surroundings which reflected in her movement and profile. 3rd, Hacker’s Teddeana Jorga Fox, PGB 6 1st Waugh’s Tribannon In The Limelite, well balanced wheaten bitch of quality one of the best heads on show today with conformation to match. Elegant neckline flowing into clean well angulated shoulders level top line and good bend of stifle. True cairn like she was extremely mischievous and naughty in the ring but sound free flowing movement could be observed. This bitch needs lots of ring craft and training to show off her many attributes and realise her full potential. 2nd Gouds Vale Of Atholl’s Bonnie Galloway, built on smaller lines than winner but everything in proportion pretty head with dark points, level top line with nice tail carriage, movement steady. 3rd Weinberger’s Correnie I Do but I Don’t. LB 7 (2abs) Best class of the day headed by two beautiful bitches. 1st Pett’s Doonrae Joie De Vivre, very aptly named R/B with dark mask and points which enhanced her lovely head and alert expression. Good fore chest, nice front and rear quarters excels in top line which is maintained standing and on the move. Presented in beautiful show condition with her shining crisp jacket, body fit and well muscled which enabled her to move freely and soundly around the ring holding everything together. CC & BOB. Went well in the Terrier Group. 2nd Dolan’s Glenrood Masquerade, W/B with dark points, true cairn head with dark twinkling eyes giving her the desired mischievous expression. Beautifully balanced bitch with lovely reach of neck flowing into a clean shoulder line, good top line and tail set complete with correct rear assembly. Presented and shown in top show condition and moving soundly. I just loved her but today could not quite match the maturity verve and vitality of the winner. I am sure her day is not very far away. The hardest decision I had to make on the day.RCC 3rd Owen’s Honeyhall Handful at Caldwall. OB 2 1st Short’s Ch Glenchess Cut The Mustard, clear red mature sturdy bitch with good head and dark eye. Fits the standard in her size and construction and moved very soundly and freely around the ring maintaining her excellent profile. Worthy Ch but today had to give way to the younger ladies. 2nd Dolan’s Glenrood Warrior Princess, well balanced dark grey brindle, attractive head and dark eye with ample neck and a nicely proportioned body. Not moving as well as winner today but a nice bitch. Judge, Mary Middlehurst.
