I would like to thank National Terrier for their hospitality and for inviting me to judge this extremely well organised show.
Overall, I was pleased with the exhibits entered. The bitches had much more depth of quality than the dogs.
I have written in critiques before (LKA 2007) about poor front construction so will not repeat myself here,
suffice to say that it has improved a little, but still needs working on and improving into the future.
Heads are of great concern.
Ears; some were large and completely stripped of hair.
Ears should be small and whilst not too heavily coated they should have some hair on and blend into the head furnishing.
Eyes; I was most disappointed to see that some were not dark hazel others were far too close together, exaggerated by being heavily stripped out between the eyes and showing just how close they really were. Eye shape.
We are starting to loose the correct eye shape and need to work really hard to eliminate round and bulging eyes from our Cairns, it is just not correct. The eye should be almond in shape and dark hazel in colour.
When you look into a Cairns eye you should not be able to see rings of copper or orange.
Teeth. There were quite a number of mouth faults. It was a pleasure, not the norm, to see 6 teeth top and bottom, setsquare to the jaw and a correct scissor bite made from good-sized teeth.
The teeth should be strong and the bite act like a pair of scissors. I saw level bites, wry mouths,
twisted, missing and even buck teeth!
Narrow muzzles and weak under jaws also need watching, as the Cairn should have a strong jaw and powerful muzzle. Toplines and ribs were mostly good as were tailsets.
Several were too long in the loin. Cairns should be medium throughout and this is what gives them correct balance, medium length of rib combined with medium loin results in a balanced animal. Some exhibits were dirty and smelly.
This really is not necessary. Cairns can be bathed or even just wiped down with a damp cloth and dried with a towel.
There were exhibits with sleep in the corners of their eyes, dirty bottoms and even a muddy belly.
The way the dogs were handled by some exhibitors did absolutely nothing to promote their dog at all.
When asked to move, they would wonder round the ring as if in the park or stride off strangulating the dog,
some having absolutely no comprehension of a triangle resulting in me, the judge,
not being able to assess movement properly.
Good handling can only boost your dogs chances of winning so consider where the judge is
and how best to show you’re dog off to its advantage.
This said, I thoroughly enjoyed my day and thank the exhibitors for bringing their dogs for me to assess.

3 young promising pups
1st: : CONFUE'S ANJOFRA IM NOT GOING A smart youngster just 6 mths old. Correct outline, good mouth and head,
lovely eye. Balanced throughout, correct coat and in good condition. Proving a handful today at his first show.
2nd: : WARD'S VANAJAM JIVE TALKING This young pup won over 3rd place because of his smarter outline.
Narrow throughout but has age on his side to broaden off. Steady mover in good coat and condition.
3rd: : THOMPSON'S CASTLELINE BANG ON TIME

Splitting the first two in this class was a difficult decision as they are both lovely pups.
1st: : FELTERS & RUMENS' LANDBUCK TILLISCH Another smart puppy with a rather large jacket,
good head with correct eye. A young pup with excellent movement
2nd: : BUCHAN'S AUCHINKYLE SUPER STAN Presents a lovely outline. You need to get your hands on this male to appreciate his excellent confirmation, just lost out on 1st as he has no jacket! Moved steadily but in need of a new coat.
3rd: : PERCY'S WINETTA SIR PERCY
Junior Dog Entry 8 Abs 2
1st: : BRENNAN'S MILINDACK WHAT NEWS WATSON Lovely head and eye, correctly balanced, showed himself off to win this class over two other good dogs, correct textured coat but better presentation would show off his virtues.
A good prospect for the future.
2nd: : SAICH'S LINDCOLY MAN HE`S TROUBLE Under all his coat this chap is a decent Cairn. His head could be improved with a slightly shorter muzzle, good large teeth, showed well and moved satisfactorily once he settled down
3rd: : BUCHAN'S AUCHINKYLE SUPER STAN
Yearling Dog Entry 4 Abs 0
Very little separated these first two males. They are virtually identical to go over and it was all down to the last move across the ring, the first placed dog moved more positively than 2nd. Both had good heads, correct large teeth,
held their toplines on the move and strode out correctly behind. Both were shown in good coat and condition.
It is a cliché but they could swap places another day.

1st: : MEARS' GLENMEAR MARAUDER A smart male with a lovely outline, moved out well just needs to tighten throughout. Shows very well. Excellent head and lovely large teeth, stands four square and has presence.
2nd: : DAVIES' TWEEDISLE STARGAZER Wheaten, not appearing to enjoy his day out
but handled to bring out the best of him, a good coat just coming through.
Post Graduate Dog Entry 4 Abs 1
The first two in this class couldn’t have been more different. They are both very good dogs but the 1st, for me is a little too long for his length of leg and the 2nd a little too short for his length of leg.
Both are very showy males with good heads and they moved out well.

Again two very different males.
1st: : SHORT'S GLENCHESS ALL IN THE STARS This dog just commanded attention as he marched round the ring his excellent confirmation enabling free flowing movement, handled to show off his virtues
and you just had to watch him move. Very showy, good head and eye.
2nd: : MARSHALL'S STRATHGARTON CRACKERJACK Presents a very smart outline and is very showy. Not moving out with as much drive as 1st. Would prefer a more almond eye to complete the picture.
Unlucky to meet 1 who was in such fine form. Shown in good coat and condition.

An excellent class. A really hard decision between the first 2, they are both outstanding examples of our breed.
1st: : MIDDLEHURST'S ZALAZAR UN ZIPPED AT STARVEREN imp I wrote in my notes “superb” and I think that just about sums him up. Yes, he needs to be a little longer in the loin for perfection but other than this you are presented with the breed standard. He has a wonderful head with correct ears and eye, lovely teeth and strong jaw, correct length of neck flowing into well placed shoulders, level topline which he holds on the move, correct rear movement with just enough drive. Lovely tail, set on correctly. A pleasure to award him the CC.
2nd: : POLLOCK'S CH LARCHLEA LICENCE TO THRILL AT STANEDYKES
Excellent head, correct reach of neck and shoulder placement, correct depth of rib and length of loin with strong hindquarters producing correct movement. He could not match the showmanship and presentation of 1 who really was in top form today and therefore had to settle for the RCC!
3rd: : SMITH'S ROCASOVALE RAZZLE DAZZLE

1st: : DOLAN'S GLENROOD MASQERADE A very feminine puppy, longer in the back than 2nd and 3rd
but just having more maturity, sound throughout.
2nd: : SMITH'S ANJOFRA PLUM TART AT ROCASOVALE A real sweety at her first show proving a handful for her handler. A very good prospect for the future and I will watch her development with interest.
3rd: : SAICH'S LINDCOLY FOREVER DANCING

1st: : HARDING'S CANNWOOD REMEMBER HOLLY Oh what a smasher. In my notes I wrote “outstanding”,
what more can I say?
2nd: : WREN'S LARCHLEA COULD IT BE MAGIC Another very good puppy just not able to match 1st for head properties.
3rd: : KEEVES' SEVEEK APRILS NEW DREAM

The 1st and 2nd in this class are two lovely bitches
1st: : OSBORN'S TWESLAM MAID BY MAGIC A very showy ultra feminine b. Excellent throughout and of a good size.
Kept her in the final line up for CC but just not matching the CC or RCC for final finish, which can only come with age.
2nd: : PETTS' DOONRAE JOIE DE VIVRE Another real quality bitch but just could not match 1st for head properties.
I really liked both 1st and 2nd and splitting them was hard and came down to minute details.
3rd PERCY'S WINETTA MY KIND OF GIRL

1st and 2nd are two very good bitches
1st: : BRAYBROOK'S CLOVERBROOK HERE I COME A quality bitch, ultra feminine,
excellent throughout and of correct size. Just needs time to mature to complete the picture.
2nd: : WAITES' SVENDALENS CRAZY DIAMOND Another very good b. Unlucky to meet 1st today, in fact this bitch was my class winner until I judged 1st! This b could not match 1st for femininity but nevertheless is quality throughout
3rd DAY'S TREKHILLI PICCILLILLI JW

1st: : OSBORN'S TWESLAM WINTER MAGIC A quality b who just needs to drive more behind. Good head,
correct bone and excellent construction.

1st: : SHEARSMITH'S CLOVERBROOK CREAM O'THE CROP AT EBORVALE A lovely b with a great outline and such presence, showed all out, of correct size and construction, just needs more coat to complete the picture
2nd: : SMEE'S HIGH CLASS BABY AT MALMAY
Another good quality b and sound throughout but just couldn’t match the head properties of 1.
3rd: : CLARKE'S LENTRICA WHO'S THE DADDY

A lovely class, headed by two real quality bitches with little but coat to separate them
1st: : OSBORN'S TWESLAM SERENDIPITY This b is spot on for size and has everything just where you want it
whilst she pushed hard for top honours I would have preferred a better eye shape
2nd: : BRAYBROOK'S CLOVERBROOK XTRA FACTOR
This is a real quality bitch who has to be gone over to be appreciated. I really liked her head and confirmation and she too showed all the time. I would like her to have a harsher jacket to take top honours,
if her owner can sort that then I am sure she will be up there with the best of them.
3rd: : SHANNON & STORR'S BRENNDARCY BUTTON IT JW

Another lovely class. The 1st and 2nd placed bitches in this class caught my eye as they moved round the ring,
they were in top form and had little to separate them
1st: : WREN'S LARCHLEA SPIRIT IN THE SKY This superb b was certainly asking for the CC today,
she didn’t stop showing and her handler did everything to show off her many virtues.
She has a super feminine head with eyes, ears and teeth all correct and where they should be.
A lovely neck with correct shoulders, producing correct front action.
Good depth of rib and correct medium length of loin with strong rear quarters,
one of the few with a defined second thigh.
A really lovely b and such a pleasure to award her the CC and BOB.
I was delighted the following morning to discover she had also gone G4.
2nd: : TEMPLETON'S LARCHLEA CAN`T REMEMBER Another one out of the top drawer.
Very pleasing b in good coat and condition, just couldn’t match the femine head properties of 1 today
3rd: : CLARKE'S CONUNDRUM SWEETER FOR ME FOR LENTRICA JW ShCM

I was very pleased with this class, but the different types made for some tough decisions.
1st ROBINSON'S CRUZO BANNOCK BELLE I awarded this lovely b the RCC last time I judged.
She is a soundly made Cairn with lots to like. She has an excellent head with good stop and correct confirmation.
She did enough to win this class but tired quickly in the challenge
and just couldn’t match the verve of the young bitches on show today.
2nd SHORT'S CH GLENCHESS CUT THE MUSTARD A quality b moving really well today.
Not as feminine as 1st but nonetheless a very good bitch shown in correct coat and condition.
3rd HOGARTY'S IR CH CADAGIO MAKE IT HAPPEN
