CAIRN JUDGE CRUFTS 11

CRUFTS MARCH 2011

Cairn Terriers – Judge Norma Newton

Thank you for an excellent entry swelled by exhibitors from several countries and with very few absentees. Many thanks to my stewards who were instrumental in my finishing in good time.

I found the entry quite varied in type, but I was still able to find many who fitted the standard as I see it. Bitches were as usual stronger in quality throughout than the dogs. Movement remains a problem, with many otherwise very good Cairns remaining unplaced because of wide fronts or close hind movement, lacking drive.

Mouths were mostly ok, a few cairns were too thin, temperaments were excellent, most coats were double and of correct texture, clean and tidy, not too ‘sculptured’

I was delighted to find exactly the Cairn I was looking for in my beautiful Best of Breed, Cannwood Remember Holly JW, she didn’t put a foot wrong and was superbly shown and presented by her handler Alison in the group, and they received a great reception from the ringside.

VD 6 (2 abs)

A good first class with 3 worthy Champions

1. Catto’s Ch/Nor/Fin/Dan/Swed Ch Birselaw Billy Fury – what can one say about Billy that has not already been said? So well made throughout, today he was in great form and condition, he never stopped showing and moved so well. A top ambassador for Cairns

2. Parker Tucker’s Ch Uniquecottage Tidy Shoes – lovely type, one I admired as a youngster, and still in very good form and coat, moved well when settled.

3. Ehrenberg’s Ch Carradine Master Tigger – Red Brindle, still very showy, masculine head, good front but lacking hair, otherwise in good coat and condition, moved well.

Special Puppy Dog- 8 entries

1. Robinson’s Cruzo Bilbo Baggins (BP) – Very nice 10 month old cream in short coat of correct texture, beautifully balanced puppy, correct neck and shoulders, top line & tail set, moved well front and rear with flowing movement. Showed well in this class but was ‘over the top’ in the challenge, a typical puppy character and I really liked him, should do well when he settles down.

2. Templeton’s Larchlea I Want to Break Free – Dark Brindle, another promising puppy, attractive head, good mouth, moved and showed well, would like a bit better spring of rib & to mature in body.

3. Waugh’s Tribannon For Your Eyes Only – liked his head and expression, good mouth, moved well, keeping his top line but dropped his tail when standing.

Special Junior Dog – 5 entries

1. Inett’s Hydecastle Reg the Rocket – Wheaten with dark points, good head, neck and shoulders, straight front, level top line, in good coat and body.

2. Parker Tucker’s Uniquecottage Jumbuck – Wheaten, liked his head, dark eye and expression, good bone and reach of neck, sound mover in correct coat.

3. Confue’s Anjofra I’m Not Going – Dark brindle, good head, balance and outline, in good coat. Still needs to mature and body up, he did go today and moved well.

Yearling Dog – 6 entries (1 abs)

1. Inett & Bambridge’s Carradine Crackaway Jack (RDCC) – Sound and well balanced typical Cairn, good head and expression, good reach of neck, shoulders and front, good bone, moved very well. Presented in hard condition and excellent coat, showmanship and movement gained him the RCC.

2. Hogarty’s Cadagio No Doubt About it – Dark brindle, beautiful head, and neat ears, would just like a little more length of back and leg to balance outline, in good coat, moved ok when settled.

3. Percy’s Sir Percy – another with super head and expression, neat ears, correct bite, in good coat, like his front movement but lacked drive in rear.

Post Grad Dog – 12 entries

1. Parker Tucker’s Uniquecottage Raleigh – red brindle, lovely type and so well balanced with good top line and tail set. Won this class on his sound movement, well presented and in correct coat.

2. Harland’s Cannwood Zipper at Thackeston – Grey brindle, attractive headed dog, good neck and shoulders, coat of correct texture, sound mover, moved ok.

3. Tutching’s Tribannon Gypsy King at Crowneast – Wheaten, liked his head but today lacked furnishings, well balanced dog with good reach of neck, front and top line, nice size and shape, moved ok when settled.

Limit Dog – 18 entries (2 abs)

1. Theodorsson’s Hjohoo’s Hjo are my Gold Nugget – Cream, dark points liked his head, neat ears, good mouth, well balanced dog with good outline and coat, won his class with his superb movement and showmanship

2. Shannon and Storr’s Brenndarcy Trouble at Mill – Red Brindle, correct masculine head, good reach of neck, top line and tail set, like his size & movement both ways, in good coat but preferred grooming of 1, very close up.

3. Shopland’s Cherrycrack Blackadder – Dark brindle, another attractive dog, with a bit more length of leg than 1 and 2, head balanced with dark mask, good neck, shoulders and top line, good tail set, moved very well, shown in super coat.

Open Dog – 9 entries

1. Smith’s Ch Rocasovale Razzle Dazzle – (DCC) Red brindle, well proportioned masculine head with alert expression, good reach of neck into correct shoulders, front, top line and tails set, well presented in fit and active condition, excellent double coat, moved soundly and showed with animation, pleased to award a well deserved CC.

2. Weinberger’s Ch Larchlea come Fly with me to Correnie – Red brindle, similar type to 1 but in a smaller frame, well balanced with good top line and tail set, attractive head and excellent mouth, covered the ground well. Nice size, in good coat and condition.

3. Harrison & Inett’s Ch Noncom Inett to Winnit with Carradine JW – Dark brindle, reminded me of his sire on type and size, masculine head and dark mask, lovely balance and outline, well presented in good coat and condition, a little too ‘lively’ today.

Good Citizen Dog – 3 entries

1. Keeves’ Seveek Who Dares Wins – Red Brindle, reserve in Puppy Dog, needs time to mature in body and movement, typical head, neat ears, good top line and tail set.

2. Morley’s Kedvaiy Locomotion – Red brindle, nice type, good head and reach of neck, in good coat and body condition, showed well.

3. Keeves Seveek Dare Devil – light red, unplaced in Post Grad.

Veteran Bitch - 5 entries

2. Short’s Ch Glenchess Golden Wings – Red, 8 years, same remarks are 1, another worthy champion, who just flowed around the ring, really covered the ground, showed well, good top line and tail set.

3. Ward’s Vanajam Piewaket – Dark brindle, 10 years, the eldest but apart from greying whiskers still looked lively and in good form, showed and moved well.

Special PB - 10 entries (1 abs)

1. Kinton’s Woodthorpe Maybe this Thyme - Red brindle, this 9 month puppy took my eye on entering the ring, and didn’t disappoint on examination, so well balanced, nice head and expression, good reach of neck top line and tail set, straight front, and strong hindquarters, showed beautifully, promising puppy.

2. Weinberger’s Correnie I Do But I Don’t – Grey brindle, 14 months, more mature than 1, also pleasing throughout, true to type, in good coat and condition, moved soundly.

3. Waites’ Svendalens If Not For You – Wheaten, 9 months and just a nice size, attractive head, needs more furnishings, dark eye, good reach of neck and level top line which was held on the move. Showed really well.

Special Jr Bitch – 12 entries (3 abs)

1. Petts’ Doonrae Kast in Gold – Red brindle, beautiful head, and ears, liked her size, reach of neck and balanced outline, good front, moved well both ends, in good coat and showed well.

2. Cameron’s Stryveling Sweet Caroline – Light red, lovely type, size and balance. Pretty head and expression, moved steadily and well, very sound, in good coat and condition.

3. Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Pocahontas – Wheaten, made up a trio of promising bitches, not a large one, but still fits our standard! Held top line on the move, very good front and movement, showed well.

Yearling Bitch – 12 (1 abs)

1. Harding’s Cannwood Remember Holly JW (BCC & BOB) – Cream, what a lovely bitch throughout, well furnished feminine head with dark points, nice eye and expression, correct size, body and outline, moved & showed to perfection, so beautifully presented and handled, a star on the day, which I for one will definitely ‘remember’

2. Roberts’ Cannwood One Moment in Time – Cream, another super bitch from this kennel and very similar in type, in lovely coat and condition, moved very well, 1 just had the edge in showmanship today.

3. Dolan’s Glenrood Masquerade – Red brindle, very attractive head and expression, good reach of neck, level top line, and tail set, correct and tidy coat. Moved and showed well.

Post Grad Bitch – 19 (2 abs)

1. Osborne’s Tweslam Winter Magic – red Brindle lovely type, feminine head, neat ears and dark eye, well balanced with level top line, held on the move, in correct and very tidy coat, moved extremely well, just would like a little more animation.

2. Shannon and Storr’s Brenndarcy Button It JW – Wheaten, another lovely quality cairn, attractive head, and expression, good reach of neck into correct shoulders, top line and tail set, moved well both ways, a very close decision with 1 who just showed with more animation today.
