MINIATURE BULL JUDGE CRUFTS 16

Miniature Bull Terriers

What can I say? An entry of 90 minis at Crufts is the stuff of dreams & so it was with great excitement, anticipation & not a little pride that I entered the fray. It’s more than fair to say I had some very tough decisions to make, in open bitch the tiniest of split-hairs were all that separated first & fifth & I’d have happily handed out seven or eight bitch CCs overall. Likewise the unbeaten dog line up was a sight for sore eyes & the CC was very hard won. I would like to thank all the exhibitors, not only for putting their trust in me to go over their dogs & to place them in (what I believed to be) the correct order, but also for treating all the decisions with great sportsmanship.

Size remains an issue but often the bigger dogs have exceptional quality & so I’d continue to urge breeders not to sacrifice that quality in too quick a pursuit of size – breeding great dogs is a marathon, not a sprint. We are still battling with upright shoulders & lack of balance &, a particular bug-bear, I saw far too many round or ‘kind’ eyes; eyes of correct size, shape & placement are essential for the breed’s distinctive expression & these were few & far between. I would urge breeders to give this important feature greater consideration when you’re planning your next litter.

VD (2)

1 Monaghan’s Multi/Int Ch Debully Enter Sandman, handsome, masculine & well balanced r/w. Very well constructed with a correct shoulder, topline & strong well muscled quarters, perhaps would like a little more bend of stifle. Strong, masculine head with a perfect mouth;

2 Harrison’s Jenkir Thor, b/br/w with a strong, masculine head & correct mouth. Presented in super condition, with excellent bone & substance but a tad upright in shoulder & just losing lost out to the winner’s super make & shape.

JD (4,1a)

1 Wilke’s Future Star vom Hause Wilke, solid b/br/w of an excellent size, masculine & well balanced with plenty of substance for size. Lovely head with arc, width, fill & turn & correct bite. Super straight front & good neck, the shoulder was a tad upright but when he was up on his toes his topline pulled together nicely making a lovely outline. He moved exceptionally well behind & took the class with some in hand. His title must be just a question of time;

2 Nelson’s Badlesmere Blown Away at Stemone, larger but very attractive br/w lad. Strong head with width, fill and turn, mouth is a reverse scissor. He was rather a reluctant showman, a tad long cast & would benefit by carrying a little more weight. He moved well both ways but not quite covering the ground as much as the winner;

3 Norman & Powell’s Snoopy Elnombre Gnasher.

PGD (11)

A tough class & a lot of dogs to like.

1 Kocaba & White’s A Minirumpus Nanook Bear, white dog with a superb head, long, wide, deep, filled right up & with a super finish, all topped off with a truly punishing expression. Good straight front, feet a little flat & untidy – perhaps some hard roadwork might benefit? Decent shoulder & topline with good strong quarters, he moved more than adequately. Excellent bone & substance, I’m not going to pretend he wasn’t one of the bigger dogs but that notwithstanding, with his exceptional virtues he more than deserved to take the class;

2 Lewis’ Lafenice Joey Tribiani, corking little dog who really took my eye. Better size than the winner, another lovely head with arc, width, fill & turn; a smaller eye would complete the picture & he’s let down by a full reverse scissor bite. To nit-pick, he could be a tad shorter in the back but he’s a superb showman, very well handled & really pulls himself together to make a lovely outline. To top it off he moved like a bomb ways;

3 Chitty’s Seaquest El Cid, deserves a mention, another lovely little dog, masculine, quality with lots of bone & substance & again moved like a train both ways. Lovely head with arc, width & fill, sadly his cross to bear is a rather round eye & two instanding canines – but what a smart little package.

LD (16,2)

Another tough class, full of quality but again needing virtues weighing against faults so plenty of interesting decisions.

1 Nicholl’s Seaquest Smooth Operator for Andriona, OK he’s another big one & my first thought was he was maybe too big, however, as I worked my way round the class & came to placing them, I moved him up next to the others in contention & found he wasn’t that much bigger & so took the class based on his overall superb quality. Excellent head which has arc, width, full & turn. Sadly he is also ‘blessed’ with two instanding canines but, again, I felt he could live with them. He has a beautiful brindle jacket & presents a balanced quality image with a correct shoulder, topline & well angulated quarters;

2 Whittaker’s Wengormick Petite Pirate, white dog who really showed his socks off, making the very best of himself & very well handled. Not quite the quality of head of the winner, a little more arc & fill would complete the picture but his mouth is correct. Lovely strong, round bone, decent shoulder & topline, strong quarters with a good second thigh, moving well both ways. Very typy & masculine.

OD (13,1)

1 Llewellyn’s Ch Bullypins Klassikos, this little dog is a beautiful quality boy, b/br/w with a most spectacular head having super arc, width, fill & turn – indeed any more would be too much. He’s not perfect by any means; he’s a reverse scissor bite & I’d prefer a smaller eye & a better rear action but with his superb quality, type, size & balance, along with his masculinity, bone & substance, he deservedly took this super, strong class. Correctly used at stud, to the right bitches, he could be a quantum leap forward for the breed. CC & BOB;

2 Dias’ Ch Cambrias Cisco Kidd, an old favourite. Another b/br/w with a super masculine head, great profile & width with a perfect mouth, but another needing a smaller eye. I dislike the overseas fashion for ‘stringing them up’ & this boy certainly doesn’t need it having a good neck, front & shoulder. Strong quarters but, again, a little disappointing on the move. Took 2nd place on his overall quality, type & balance;

3 Kick & Hosl’s Ger Ch Jason von der Alten Veste.

VB (5,1)

1 Salewski-Mielchen’s Int/Ger/Bel/Dutch/Dan/Lux Ch Bumblebee of Slanting Shore, br/w in excellent hard/fit condition, 9 years old. Good strong head with width & fill, perfect mouth. Lovely body lines, strong & compact & moving well both ways, beautifully presented & handled;

2 Shaw’s Ch Badlesmere Booklet, 10½ years, very pretty, feminine bitch with a lovely head having arc width & fill & a correct mouth. Just beginning to show her age a little & not quite the body lines of the winner but a real cracker;

3 Austin-Bohm’s Bel/Dan/Ger/Lux/Dutch/Int Ch Elizabeth 1 Trooping The Colour.

PB (1)

1 Wright’s Hofstetter My Intimate, really pretty white who stood alone. Pretty, feminine head, long with arc, width & fill, a good neck, straight front & shoulders, perhaps a little long cast but she’d easily disguise that if she got on her toes a little more. Very promising baby.

JB (5,1)

1 Wilke’s First Class vom Hause Wilke, solid brindle of a lovely size who really impressed in this class. Beautiful feminine head with arc, width, turn & finish & lovely small ears; another one who’d benefit from a smaller eye. Super straight front, decent shoulder & topline. I’d like a little more strength in the quarters but she covered the ground well both ways. Well presented & handled, I loved her quality & her super mini type;

2 Vickers’ Maybe Dubessa Whisky Makdani, attractive white whose also good for size; a strong head with a good expression but would like a little more fill, her mouth is a reverse scissor. Not the shoulder or topline of the winner & not quite the front but lovely quarters, which she used extremely well on the move. She took second place on her better size, the other two in the class being larger types.

PGB (13,3)

1 Stupp’s Little White Gladiators Hello Kitty, br/w bitch. Extremely feminine & attractive bitch of excellent quality who really caught my eye. Lovely head with arc, width, turn & a perfect mouth; again I would prefer a smaller eye. Elegant neck, good shoulder & topline & well balanced. She moved well both ways. A little more bone would complete the picture, well handled & beautifully presented;

2 Harper’s Olympusbulys Iris Toadfoot, tri bitch of a completely different type, being considerably bigger but also really beautiful & full of quality. Strong head, again with arc, width, fill & turn but one instanding canine. She took 2nd place on her virtues: great balance, correct shoulder, front & topline. Quarters very strong when standing but just a little disappointing on the move;

3 Armitage’s Diesirae Tribal Narcissus.

LB (8)

1 Vicker’s Duvessa Last Lady, br/w. Feminine girl with a really lovely head, having arc, width & turn; her mouth is correct, would like a smaller, darker eye. A little upright in shoulder but level topline & strong quarters which she used well on the move covering the ground with ease;

2 Gorbacz-Wonicka’s Rio Dulce Friend Of Mine, beautiful headed bitch, lovely arc, width & filled right up with a good finish, decent eye but sadly undershot. Well marked & very smart she looked well constructed when standing but was very disappointing on the move behind;

3 Ortega’s Trickynetics Delicious, deserves a mention. Very pretty feminine girl, not the head of 2nd but made a lovely outline with correct construction, quality & type.

OB (11,2)

Really tough class but tough in a good way, there being five bitches here who I’d happily award a CC to!

1 Kick & Hosl’s Reebooks Bounty, br/w with a beautiful strong, quality head, correct arc, width, turn & finish, I would again prefer a slightly smaller eye, but her mouth is perfect. Very well marked, with excellent bone & substance & super construction, a good shoulder, topline, straight front & strong quarters, she moved extremely well both ways. What’s not to like? CC;

2 Roman’s Multi Ch Oki-Doki De L’costa, this b/br/w is a real favourite of mine & it was a tough call. Very pretty feminine head with arc, width & fill but not just the power of the winner. She’s exceptionally well balanced with a great front, shoulder, topline & quarters which all came together on the move, being parallel both ways. She was the best mover of the day. Beautifully presented & well handled. RCC;

3 Kaestner’s Bullrichs Catch Me If You Can, beautifully headed b/br/w, sweeping profile, width, fill, turn & a perfect mouth. Good bone & substance but just a little upright & not the construction & movement of 1 & 2.
